An aircraft engine nacelle inlet is provided with an inlet cowling. The inlet cowling includes an inner lip, an outer lip, and a leading edge portion connecting the inner and outer lips. Heating elements are provided proximate the leading edge, either on an inside surface of the cowling or on an outside surface. An inner barrel portion and an outer barrel portion of the nacelle inlet define a space therebetween. Ice protection-related equipment such as controllers, cables, switches, connectors, and the like, may reside in this space. One or more access openings are formed in the outer barrel to enable an operator to gain access to this equipment. The inlet cowling attaches to the inner and outer barrels with its outer lip extending sufficiently far in the aft direction to cover the access opening. When the cowling is removed, the access opening is uncovered, thereby permitting access to the equipment.

What is claimed is: 1. A nacelle inlet for an aircraft engine nacelle having an outer barrel and an inner barrel, the nacelle inlet comprising: electrical heating means for selectively heating at least a portion of a nacelle inlet surface, the electrical heating means being mounted between the outer barrel and the inner barrel; and access means for selectively accessing the electrical heating means, the access means including at least one access opening formed in the outer barrel and being configured to promote laminar airflow over the nacelle inlet surface. 2. The nacelle inlet according to claim 1, wherein the electrical heating means comprises at least one heater switch box. 3. The nacelle inlet according to claim 1, wherein the electrical heating means comprises at least one flexible ribbon heater. 4. The nacelle inlet according to claim 1, wherein the access means further comprises: a removable cowling covering the at least one service access opening to thereby promote laminar airflow over the nacelle inlet surface. 5. The nacelle inlet according to claim 4, wherein: the removable cowling comprises an inner lip, an outer lip and a leading edge portion connecting the inner lip to the outer lip; and the removable cowling is devoid of an individual cover for the at least one service access opening. 6. The nacelle inlet according to claim 4, wherein: a plurality of circumferentially spaced service access openings are formed in the outer barrel; and the removable cowling is devoid of an individual cover for each service access opening. 7. The nacelle inlet according to claim 6, wherein: the removable cowling comprises a smooth aerodynamic outer lip surface proximate to the leading edge portion. 8. The nacelle inlet according to claim 4, wherein: the removable cowling comprises an inner lip, an outer lip and a leading edge portion connecting the inner lip to the outer lip; the outer lip has a smooth aerodynamic surface proximate to the leading edge portion; and the outer lip is devoid of an individual cover for the at least one service access opening. 9. A nacelle inlet for an aircraft engine nacelle having an outer barrel and an inner barrel, the nacelle inlet comprising: at least one service access opening formed in the outer barrel; and a cowling that can be selectively installed or removed; wherein: when the cowling is installed, the cowling covers the at least one service access opening formed in the outer barrel, to thereby promote laminar airflow over the nacelle inlet surface; and when the cowling is removed, the cowling no longer covers the at least one service access opening formed in the outer barrel, thereby permitting access, via the outer barrel, to an area between the outer barrel and the inner barrel. 10. The nacelle inlet according to claim 9, wherein: the cowling comprises an inner lip, an outer lip and a leading edge portion connecting the inner lip to the outer lip; and the cowling is devoid of an individual cover for the at least one service access opening. 11. The nacelle inlet according to claim 9, wherein: a plurality of circumferentially spaced service access openings are formed in the outer barrel; and the cowling is devoid of an individual cover for each service access opening. 12. The nacelle inlet according to claim 11, wherein: the cowling comprises a smooth aerodynamic outer lip surface proximate to the leading edge portion. 13. The nacelle inlet according to claim 9, wherein: the cowling comprises an inner lip, an outer lip and a leading edge portion connecting the inner lip to the outer lip; the outer lip has a smooth aerodynamic surface proximate to the leading edge portion; and the outer lip is devoid of an individual cover for the at least one service access opening. 14. The nacelle inlet according to claim 9, further comprising: electrical heating equipment for selectively heating at least a portion of a nacelle inlet surface, the electrical heating equipment being mounted between the outer barrel and the inner barrel; wherein: when the cowling is removed, the at least one service access opening permits access to the electrical heating equipment mounted between the outer barrel and the inner barrel.
