The invention claimed is: 1. A table saw comprising: a table defining a work surface, where the table includes an opening; a generally planar, circular blade configured to extend at least partially above the work surface through the opening; a motor to drive the blade; a riving knife or splitter having a substantially planar base portion with opposing sides; an elevation carriage supporting the blade and configured to move to change the elevation of the blade relative to the work surface with the blade at a specific angular orientation relative to the work surface; a mounting system configured to hold the riving knife or splitter adjacent the blade and within the projected kerf of the blade and with the opposing sides of the base portion substantially parallel to the plane of the blade; where the mounting system is supported to move with the elevation carriage; where the mounting system includes a clamping structure adapted to open to receive the base portion and to clamp the base portion when closed; where the clamping structure includes a first clamp surface, a second clamp surface spaced apart from the first clamp surface so that the base portion can be placed between the clamp surfaces with the opposing sides of the base portion generally parallel to the first and second clamp surfaces, and a handle adapted to pivot between a first position where the clamping structure is open and a second position where the clamping structure is closed; where the first and second clamp surfaces are positioned below the work surface adjacent the opening in the table and where the opening in the table is sized so that when the second clamp surface is spaced apart from the first clamp surface the base portion of the riving knife can be placed between the clamp surfaces by passing the base portion from a position above the work surface through the opening in the table and into the space between the clamp surfaces; where the first and second clamp surfaces are coupled together by a bolt that passes through the clamp surfaces, where the bolt has a threaded end and an end opposite the threaded end; where the handle is mounted on the end of the bolt opposite the threaded end; where the clamping structure further includes at least one flange extending out from one of the first and second clamp surfaces and at least one edge associated with the other of the first and second clamp surfaces, where the flange and edge are configured to interact to maintain the first and second clamp surfaces in a given orientation relative to each other; where the clamping structure includes a spring biasing one clamp surface away from the other clamp surface; where pivoting the handle from the first position to the second position causes at least one clamp surface to move toward the other and clamp the opposing sides of the base portion; where pivoting the handle from the second position to the first position allows the spring to tend to move at least one clamp surface away from the other clamp surface to release the base portion so that the riving knife or splitter can be removed from between the clamp surfaces by hand without using tools; where the handle pivots around a pivot point below the work surface; where the handle includes a hand-grippable portion located below the work surface when the handle is in the second position, and where the hand-grippable portion is positioned so that it can be accessed by a user reaching from above the work surface through the opening in the table; where the handle can be pivoted by hand from one of the first position and second position to the other without using tools and without having to pivot the handle more than one full revolution around the pivot point; and where the handle is constrained from pivoting through more than one full revolution. 2. The table saw of claim 1, further comprising at least one eccentric cam surface associated with the handle so that the cam surface pivots with the handle, and where the cam surface is configured to move one clamp surface toward the other when the handle pivots from the first position to the second position. 3. The table saw of claim 1, further comprising at least one cam surface, where pivoting of the handle causes pivoting of the cam surface, and where the cam surface includes a detent. 4. The table saw of claim 1 where the end of the bolt opposite the threaded end is a non-threaded end, and where the handle includes a portion configured to fit around the non-threaded end. 5. The table saw of claim 1, further comprising a mounting plate secured to the elevation carriage, where the first clamp surface comprises a positioning plate mounted to the mounting plate and the second clamp surface comprises a clamping plate adjacent the positioning plate, and where the positioning and clamping plates contact the opposing sides of the base portion when the base portion is clamped in the clamping structure. 6. The table saw of claim 1, where the mounting system further comprises a mounting plate mounted to the elevation carriage, where the position of the mounting plate in the saw is adjustable, where adjusting the position of the mounting plate changes the position of the riving knife or splitter relative to the blade when the base portion is clamped in the clamping structure, where the first clamp surface comprises a positioning plate mounted to the mounting plate, and where the second clamp surface comprises a clamping plate adjacent the positioning plate. 7. The table saw of claim 1, where the mounting system further comprises a mounting plate mounted to the elevation carriage, where the first clamp surface comprises a positioning plate mounted to the mounting plate, where the position of the positioning plate relative to the mounting plate is adjustable, where adjusting the position of the positioning plate changes the position of the riving knife or splitter relative to the blade when the base portion is clamped in the clamping structure, and where the second clamp surface comprises a clamping plate adjacent the positioning plate. 8. The table saw of claim 1 where the handle pivots around a pivot axis passing through the pivot point, and further comprising a cam surface associated with the handle so that the cam surface pivots with the handle around the pivot axis, where at least a portion of the cam surface has a non-linear profile relative to the pivot axis, and where pivoting the handle causes a cam action to move at least one clamp surface toward the other to close the clamping structure. 9. The table saw of claim 1 further comprising a cam surface associated with the handle, where the cam surface is shaped so that initial pivoting of the handle at a predetermined speed from the first position to the second position moves at least one clamp surface toward the other clamp surface at a rate less than subsequent pivoting of the handle at the same predetermined Speed. 10. The table saw of claim 1 further comprising a cam surface associated with the handle, where the cam surface is shaped so that medial pivoting of the handle at a predetermined speed from the first position to the second position moves at least one clamp surface toward the other clamp surface at a rate greater than subsequent pivoting of the handle at the same predetermined speed. 11. The table saw of claim 1 where the handle pivots around a pivot axis passing through the pivot point, and further comprising at least one cam surface associated with the handle so that pivoting of the handle causes pivoting of the cam surface around the pivot axis, where at least a portion of the cam surface has a curved profile relative to the pivot axis. 12. The table saw of claim 8 where the pivot axis is substantially perpendicular to the plane of the blade. 13. The table saw of claim 11 where the pivot axis is substantially perpendicular to the plane of the blade. 14. The table saw of claim 1, further comprising a mounting plate secured to the elevation carriage, where the first clamp surface comprises a positioning plate mounted to the mounting plate and the second clamp surface comprises a clamping plate adjacent the positioning plate, and where the positioning plate and clamping plate are located outside the perimeter of the blade. 15. The table saw of claim 1, where the first clamp surface, second clamp surface and handle are linked together when the clamping structure is both open and closed. 17. The table saw of claim 1, where the clamping structure is configured so that the riving knife or splitter can be removed from between the clamp surfaces when the clamping structure is open without disassembly of the clamping structure. 18. The table saw of claim 1, where the spring is partially compressed when the clamping structure is open. 19. The table saw of claim 1, where the spring is partially compressed when the clamping structure is open and compressed more when the clamping structure is dosed. 20. The table saw of claim 1, where the spring is positioned on the bolt. 21. The table saw of claim 1, where at least one of the first and second clamp surfaces includes a recess to receive at least a portion of the spring. 22.
