A catalyst precursor composition and methods for making such catalyst precursor are disclosed. The catalyst precursor comprises at least a Promoter metal selected from Group VIII, Group IIB, Group IIA, Group IVA and combinations thereof, at least one Group VIB metal, at least one organic, oxygen-containing ligand, and a cellulose-containing material. The oxygen-containing ligand is an environmentally friendly/non-toxic material having an LD50 rate of >500 mg/Kg as single oral dose to rats. Catalysts prepared from the sulfidation of such catalyst precursors are used in the hydro processing of hydrocarbon feeds.

What is claimed is: 1. An unsupported catalyst precursor compositions obtained by co-precipitation, wherein the composition is prepared by: mixing at reaction conditions to form a precipitate or cogel: at least a Promoter metal compound in solution selected from the group of Group VIII, Group IIB, Group IIA, Group IVA and combinations thereof; at least a Group VIB metal compound in solution; and at least one organic oxygen containing ligand in solution, wherein the organic oxygen containing ligand has an LD50 rate of >500 mg/Kg as single oral dose to rats; and performing a solid-liquid separation to collect the precipitate or cogel; and drying the precipitate or cogel at a temperature of 200° C. or less forming the unsupported catalyst precursor. 2. The catalyst precursor composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is charge neutral, and of the formula Av[(MP)(OH)x(L)ny]z(MVIBO4), wherein A is at least one of an alkali metal cation, an ammonium, an organic ammonium and a phosphonium cation, MP is selected from the group of Group VIII, Group IIB, Group IIA, Group IVA and combinations thereof, P is oxidation state with MP having an oxidation state of either +2 or +4, depending on the selection or MP, L is at least one organic oxygen-containing ligand having an charge n<=0; MVIB is at least a Group VIB metal having an oxidation state of +6, MP:MVIB has an atomic ratio of 100:1 to 1:100; v−2+P*z−x*z+n*y*z=0; and 0<y≦−P/n; 0<x≦P; 0<v≦2; 0<z. 3. The catalyst precursor composition of claim 1, wherein the organic oxygen containing ligand L has an LD50 rate of >700 mg/Kg. 4. The catalyst precursor composition of claim 3, wherein the organic oxygen containing ligand L has an LD50 rate of >1000 mg/Kg. 5. The catalyst precursor composition of claim 1, wherein the oxygen-containing chelating agent L is a non-toxic organic additive. 6. The catalyst precursor composition of claim 5, wherein the oxygen-containing chelating agent L is a non-toxic organic additive selected from the group of formic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, succinic acid, tartaric acid, citric acid, oxalic acid, glyoxylic acid, aspartic acid, alkane sulfonic acids such as methane sulfonic acid and ethane sulfonic acid, aryl sulfonic acid, and arylcarboxylic acid. 7. The catalyst precursor composition of claim 6, wherein the organic, oxygen-containing ligand L is maleic acid. 8. The catalyst precursor composition of claim 1, wherein the oxygen-containing chelating agent L is selected from the group of glycolic acid, lactic acid, tartaric acid, malic acid, citric acid, gluconic acid, methoxy-acetic acid, ethoxy-acetic acid, malonic acid, succinic acid, and glyoxylic. 9. The catalyst precursor composition of claim 1, wherein the oxygen-containing chelating agent L is an organic sulfur compounds. 10. The catalyst precursor composition of claim 9, wherein the oxygen-containing chelating agent L is selected from mercapto-succinic acid and thio-diglycolic acid. 11. The catalyst precursor composition of claim 2, wherein MP is nickel, MVIB is selected from molybdenum, tungsten, and combinations thereof, and wherein Ni:(Mo+W) has a molar ratio of 10:1 to 1:10. 12. The catalyst precursor composition of claim 2, wherein the catalyst precursor is mesoporous with an average pore volume between 0.1 and 0.2 cc/g. 13. The catalyst precursor composition of claim 2, wherein the catalyst precursor has an average surface area between about 10 and 200 m2/g as measured by BJH analysis under B.E.T. nitrogen adsorption conditions. 14. The catalyst precursor composition of claim 2, wherein the catalyst precursor is sulfided and thus resulting in an active catalyst. 15. The catalyst precursor composition of claim 2, wherein L is negatively charged. 16. The catalyst precursor composition of claim 2, wherein MP is selected from nickel, cobalt, iron and combinations thereof. 17. The catalyst precursor composition of claim 15, wherein MP is nickel. 18. The catalyst precursor composition of claim 15, wherein MP is cobalt. 19. The catalyst precursor composition of claim 2 wherein MVIB is selected from molybdenum, tungsten, chromium, and combinations thereof. 20. The catalyst precursor composition of claim 14, wherein MVIB is selected from molybdenum, tungsten, and combinations thereof. 21. The catalyst precursor composition of claim 2 wherein MVIB comprises molybdenum, and tungsten, and wherein the molybdenum: tungsten ratio ranges from 1:10 to 10:1. 22. The catalyst precursor composition of claim 20, wherein the molybdenum:tungsten ratio ranges from 1:2 to 1:3. 23. The catalyst precursor composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is extruded forming an extrudate. 24. The catalyst precursor composition of claim 23, wherein at least a cellulose containing material is added to the catalyst precursor composition prior to extrusion. 25. The catalyst precursor composition of claim 23, wherein the extrudate is dried at a temperature ranging from 50 to 200° C. 26. The catalyst precursor composition of claim 23, wherein the extrudate is sulfided and thus resulting in an active catalyst. 27. A catalyst precursor composition of the formula Av[(MP)(OH)x(L)n y]z(MVIBO4), obtained by co-precipitation at reaction conditions forming a precipitate or cogel with: at least a promoter metal compound selected from Group VIII, Group IIB, Group IIA, Group IVA and combinations thereof, having an oxidation state of +2 or +4, at least one of a Group VIB metal compound having an oxidation state of +6, at least one organic, oxygen-containing ligand L having a charge n≦=0 and an LD50 rate of >500 mg/Kg as single oral dose to rats; wherein A is at least one of an alkali metal cation, an ammonium, an organic ammonium and a phosphonium cation, MP is selected from Group VIII, Group IIB, Group IIA, Group IVA and combinations thereof, P is oxidation state of M MP:MVIB has an atomic ratio of 100:1 to 1:100; v−2+P*z−x*z+n*y*z=0; and 0<y≦−P/n; 0<x≦P; 0<v≦2; 0<z. 28. The catalyst precursor compositions of claim 27, wherein the at least a promoter metal is a water soluble nickel salt, the at least a Group VIB metal salt is selected from ammonium hexamolybdate, ammonium metatungstate, and combinations thereof, and the organic, oxygen-containing ligand L is selected from the group of formic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, succinic acid, tartaric acid, citric acid, oxalic acid, glyoxylic acid, aspartic acid, alkane sulfonic acids such as methane sulfonic acid and ethane sulfonic acid, aryl sulfonic acid, and arylcarboxylic acid. 29. The catalyst precursor compositions of claim 28, wherein the organic, oxygen-containing ligand L is maleic acid. 30. A catalyst prepared by sulfiding a catalyst precursor of claim 1. 31. A catalyst prepared by sulfiding a catalyst precursor of claim 2.
