An article comprising: a substrate; and a high temperature coating coated on the substrate, wherein the high temperature coating comprises a first region and a second region interspersed with respect to each other such that the coating is operable to reflect photons having a wavelength greater than about 700 nm and to emit or transmit photons having a wavelength between about 400 nm and about 700 nm arranged in a structure such that the first and second regions maintain a periodicity of distribution between about 100 nm and about 1000 nm, wherein the first region comprises a first material selected from the group consisting of HfC, NbC, W2C, ZrC, HfN, Nb2N, Ta2N, ZrN, HfB2, TaB2, ZrB2, W2B, HfO2 and combinations thereof and the second region comprises a transition metal in elemental form. 2. The article of claim 1, wherein the second region comprises a metal in elemental form selected from the group consisting of W, Os, Re, Mo, and Au. 3. The article of claim 1, wherein the second region comprises a metal in elemental form selected from the group consisting of W, Os, Re, Mo, Au, Ta, Nb, C, Hf, and Zr. 4. The article of claim 1, wherein the substrate comprises a material selected from the group consisting of W, C, Os, Re, Mo, Ta, Nb and combinations of two or more thereof. 5. The article of claim 1, wherein the first region comprises HfO2 or HfN and the second region comprises a metal in elemental form selected from the group consisting of W, Os, Re, Mo and combinations of two or more thereof. 6. The article of claim 1, wherein the substrate comprises a material selected from the group consisting of W, C, Os, Re, Mo, Ta, Nb and combinations of two or more thereof. 7. A lamp comprising the article of claim 1. 8. An article comprising: a heating element; and a high temperature coating coated on the heating element, wherein the high temperature coating comprises a first region and a second region arranged in a structure such that the first and second regions maintain a periodicity of distribution between about 100 nm and about 1000 nm, wherein the first region comprises a first material selected from the group consisting of HfC, NbC, W2C, ZrC, HfN, Nb2N, Ta2N, ZrN, HfB2, TaB2, ZrB2, W2B, HfO2 and combinations thereof and the second region comprises a material selected from the group consisting of HfO2, ZrO2, C and combinations of two or more thereof. 9. An article comprising: a substrate; and a high temperature coating coated on the substrate, wherein the high temperature coating comprises a first region and a second region interspersed with respect to each other such that the coating is operable to reflect photons having a wavelength greater than about 700 nm and to emit or transmit photons having a wavelength between about 400 nm and about 700, wherein the second region comprises a second material selected from the group consisting of transition metals in elemental form, and the first region comprises a first material selected from the group consisting of HfC, NbC, W2C, ZrC, HfN, Nb2N, Ta2N, ZrN, Hf B2, TaB2, ZrB2, W2B, HfO2, and combinations of two or more thereof. 10. The article of claim 9, wherein the first and second regions are arranged in a structure such that the first and second regions maintain a periodicity of distribution between about 100 nm and about 1000 nm. 11. The article of claim 9, wherein the first region comprises a first plurality of nanoparticles and the second region comprises a second plurality of nanoparticles. 12. The article of claim 9, wherein the second region comprises a plurality of nanoparticles and the first material is coated on the plurality of nanoparticles.
