A method of retrofitting an internal combustion engine for electrical power generation, the internal combustion engine having a plurality of pistons connected to a common crankshaft, the method comprising: disconnecting at least one piston of the plurality of pistons from the crankshaft; applying to the at least piston at least one power converter, wherein the at least one power converter is operable to convert mechanical energy of the at least one piston to and from electrical energy; and after the applying, re-connecting the crankshaft to the at least one piston with a longitudinal axis of the crankshaft oriented non-parallel to a stroke path of the at least one piston. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein applying to the at least piston at least one power converter includes applying a power converter to each piston. 3. The method of claim 1, further comprising applying a magnet to each piston, wherein the at least one power converter includes an armature operable with the magnet to apply a force to the piston. 4. The method of claim 3, wherein the armature is operable with the magnet to generate electric current in response to movement of the magnet. 5. The method of claim 3, wherein the magnet is an electromagnet. 6. The method of claim 3, wherein the magnet is a permanent magnet. 7. The method of claim 1, further comprising applying to the engine a thermal controller that acts to limit thermal excursions of at least a portion of the engine. 8. The method of claim 7, wherein the thermal controller includes a cooling system. 9. The method of claim 7, wherein the thermal controller includes insulation. 10. The method of claim 1, wherein the power converter is electrically coupled to an energy management system. 11. The method of claim 10, wherein the energy management system includes an energy storage device. 12. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one power converter is electrically coupled to a control system. 15. The method of claim 14, wherein the control system is configured to drive the pistons synchronously. 16. The method of claim 14, wherein the control system is configured to drive the pistons asynchronously. 17. The method of claim 14, wherein the control system is configured to determine whether to drive a selected piston at least partially in response to a determined operating condition. 18. The method of claim 14, wherein the control system is configured to determine a velocity profile of a piston stroke at least partially in response to a determined operating condition. 20. The method of claim 19, wherein the determined operating condition is selected from the group consisting of incline, temperature, current draw, speed, acceleration, braking, load, fuel composition, engine emissions, power, local rules, and engine settings. 21. The method of claim 14, wherein the control system is configured to determine a compression ratio at least partially in response to a determined operating condition. 22. The method of claim 21, wherein the determined operating condition is selected from the group consisting of incline, temperature, current draw, speed, acceleration, braking, load, fuel composition, engine emissions, power, local rules, and engine settings. 23. The method of claim 1, wherein applying to the at least one piston at least one power converter includes coupling the at least one piston to a mechanism that converts piston travel to a rotary movement. 24. The method of claim 23, wherein the mechanism is a helical gear. 25. The method of claim 23, wherein the mechanism includes a magnet, and wherein the applied power converter includes an armature that operates with the magnet to convert rotation of the magnet to electrical energy. 26. The method of claim 23, wherein the mechanism includes an armature that interacts with a variable reluctance magnetic circuit to convert rotary movement to electrical energy. 27. The method of claim 23, wherein the mechanism includes an armature that interacts with a variable inductance magnetic circuit to convert rotary movement to electrical energy. 28.
