The controller may be configured to selectively reduce an amount of fluid displaced during at least one, but less than all of the plurality of displacement strokes. The reduction may be initiated in response to a demand for the displaced fluid.

A pump for a combustion engine having at least one fuel injector, comprising:at least one pumping member movable through a plurality of displacement strokes during a single engine cycle; anda controller configured to selectively reduce an amount of fluid displaced by the at least one pumping member during at least one displacement stroke, but less than all of the plurality of displacement strokes in response to a demand for the displaced fluid, the at least one displacement stroke being selected by the controller for reduction based on an injection timing so as to overlap at least partially with an injection of the at least one fuel injector to reduce a force associated with the pumping member during combustion of fuel injected by the injector, the controller causing the pump to displace at least some fluid during the at least one displacement stroke selected for reduction.
