A modular plastic shopping cart basket comprising: opposed side walls, a front wall and a bottom; an upper edge extending along the side walls and the front wall; the upper edge having a given thickness; a channel-shaped overlay covering at least a portion of the upper edge, the overlay being in a detachably snapped-on relationship with the portion of the upper edge, the overlay also having a generally U-shaped cross-section fitting on the portion of the upper edge and being sized so as to provide a gap between the overlay and an outer surface of the portion of the upper edge when the overlay is snapped onto the portion; the portion of the upper edge having at least one zone of connection having a smaller thickness than said given thickness; and a tray having a rim provided with at least one hook connectable to said at least one zone of connection to suspend the tray from the upper edge, said rim with the at least one hook being sized to fit in said gap. 2. The basket of claim 1, wherein the portion extends along the upper edge of the front wall and part of each side wall to be generally U-shaped when viewed from above. 3. The basket of claim 1, wherein the overlay comprises multiple pairs of opposed snap elements, the pairs being spaced apart along an inner surface of the overlay, and the portion of the upper edge comprises multiple pairs of opposed apertures provided therealong, each pair of snap elements being detachably snappable within each pair of apertures. 4. The basket of claim 1, further comprising two slots respectively provided at opposed upper front corners of the basket and below the portion of the upper edge, the slots being sized to allow passage of a user's hand, the overlay being sized to skirt an upper boundary of each slot. 5. The basket of claim 1, wherein the at least one zone of connection comprises a plurality of zones spaced-apart along the portion of the upper edge in a crenulation configuration, and the at least one hook comprises a plurality of hooks each being connectable to a corresponding one of the zones. 6. A molded shopping cart basket comprising: a one-piece structure made of injection molded plastic, comprising: tubular zones of hollowed plastic, each tubular zone having an annular cross-section with a peripheral wall and comprising: a main tubular section with opposed ends; at least first and second branching tubular sections connected to one of the ends of the main tubular section in a bifurcated relationship, the peripheral wall of the first branching section having a greater thickness than the peripheral wall of the second branching section. 7. The basket of claim 6, further comprising opposed side walls having respective upper edges, a front wall and a bottom floor; and wherein for each tubular zone the main tubular section extends longitudinally along a rear part of the upper edge of one of the side walls, the first branching tubular section extends longitudinally forward from the main section along the upper edge, and the second branching section extends downward from the upper edge to the bottom floor along one of the side walls. 8. The basket of claim 7, wherein the first branching section further extends around to the front wall and downward along the front wall to the bottom floor. 9. The basket of claim 7, wherein in cross-section the main tubular section and the first branching section are each higher than they are wide.
