A variceal band ligation system comprising: a variceal banding endoscope comprising: an elongated shaft with a proximal end and a distal end;a working channel extending from the proximal end to the distal end of the shaft;a variceal banding apparatus integrated with the distal end of the shaft, wherein the variceal banding apparatus comprises a hood on which a plurality of ligation bands are disposed and an elongate member for individually deploying the plurality of ligation bands, and wherein the hood includes a plurality of retaining structures disposed thereon,wherein each retaining structure of the plurality of retaining structures comprises a ridge extending radially outwards from the surface of the hood and around at least a substantial portion of a circumference of the hood, andwherein prior to applying tension to the elongate member, the elongate member is arranged around each ridge and under each ligation band such that the elongate member contacts an apex of each ridge and wherein, upon tension of the elongate member, a ligation band closest to the distal end of the shaft is released; anda control unit functionally connected to the variceal banding endoscope, the control unit comprising an actuator capable of actuating the elongate member. 2. The system of claim 1, wherein the variceal banding endoscope is a single-use endoscope. 3. The system of claim 1, wherein the elongate member is disposed in a separate lumen from the working channel. 4. The system of claim 1, wherein the system further comprises a position tracking system for mapping reference coordinates of a varix. 5. The system of claim 4, wherein the position tracking system includes an electromagnetic sensor element in the endoscope. 6. The system of claim 1, wherein the system further comprises a processor that executes instructions for tracking the number of ligation bands contained on the hood of the variceal banding endoscope. 7. The system of claim 6, wherein the processor executes instructions for tracking input commands from the user input device. 8. The system of claim 7, wherein the system further comprises a display device adapted to display signals received from the control unit. 9. The system of claim 8, wherein the display device displays the number of ligation bands remaining on the hood of the variceal banding endoscope. 10. An endoscope, comprising: an elongated shaft with a proximal end and a distal end;a working channel extending from the proximal end to the distal end of the shaft;an imaging system at or adjacent the distal end of the shaft;a variceal banding apparatus fixedly coupled to the distal end of the shaft; wherein the variceal banding apparatus comprises: a hood that projects distally from the distal end of the shaft, is adapted to receive a plurality of ligation bands, and includes a plurality of retaining structures disposed thereon,wherein each retaining structure of the plurality of retaining structures comprises a ridge extending radially outwards from the surface of the hood and around at least a substantial portion of a circumference of the hood; andan elongate member configured to individually deploy each of the plurality of ligation bands,wherein prior to applying tension to the elongate member, the elongate member is arranged around each ridge and under each ligation band such that the elongate member contacts an apex of each ridge and wherein, upon tension of the elongate member, a ligation band closest to the distal end of the shaft is released; anda handle fixedly attached to the endoscope, the handle including an integrated user input device and an actuator configured to interact with the elongate member upon receiving input from the user input device. 11. The endoscope of claim 10, wherein the endoscope is a single-use endoscope. 12. The endoscope of claim 10, wherein the outer diameter of the hood is substantially the same as the outer diameter of the distal end of the shaft. 13. The endoscope of claim 10, wherein the outer diameter of the hood is smaller than the outer diameter of the distal end of the shaft. 14. The endoscope of claim 10, wherein the elongate member is a trigger cable that extends from the proximal end of the shaft to the hood. 15. The endoscope of claim 14, wherein the trigger cable extends through a lumen extending from the proximal end to the distal end of the shaft. 16. The endoscope of claim 14, wherein the proximal end of the distal shaft is removably connected to a control unit, and wherein the trigger cable is actuated by an actuator in the control unit in response to a user input device. 17. The endoscope of claim 14, wherein the trigger cable is manually actuated by an actuator located in the handle. 18. The endoscope of claim 10, wherein the hood further comprises a sensor element for sensing the presence of each of the plurality of ligation bands received thereon. 19. The endoscope of claim 10, wherein the hood further comprises a position sensor element for tracking the position of the endoscope in a patient. 20. A kit for variceal ligation, said kit comprising: i) a variceal banding endoscope comprising: an elongated shaft with a proximal end and a distal end;a working channel extending from the proximal end to the distal end of the shaft;an imaging system at or adjacent the distal end of the shaft;a variceal banding apparatus fixedly coupled to the distal end of the shaft; wherein the variceal banding apparatus comprises: a hood adapted to receive a plurality of ligation bands and including a plurality of retaining structures disposed thereon,wherein each retaining structure of the plurality of retaining structures comprises a ridge extending radially outwards from the surface of the hood and around at least a substantial portion of a circumference of the hood; andan elongate member configured to individually deploy each of the plurality of ligation bands,wherein prior to applying tension to the elongate member, the elongate member is arranged around each ridge and under each ligation band such that the elongate member contacts an apex of each ridge, and wherein, wherein, upon tension of the elongate member, a ligation band closest to the distal end of the shaft is released; anda handle integrated with the endoscope, the handle including: an actuator located within the handle and configured to actuate the elongate member; anda user input device that is integrated within the handle and is functionally connected to the actuator; andii) a plurality of ligation bands. 21. The kit of claim 20, wherein the variceal banding endoscope and the plurality of ligation bands are packaged into a removable sterile wrapper. 22. The kit of claim 20, the kit further comprising a computer readable media having software provisions for tracking the number of ligation bands remaining on the hood during clinical use. 23. The endoscope of claim 10, wherein the trigger cable is arranged around each ligation band of the plurality of ligation bands in succession such that each ligation band is released from the hood and also released from the trigger cable upon actuation of the trigger cable. 24. The endoscope of claim 14, wherein the trigger cable is in physical contact with the plurality of ligation bands. 25. The kit of claim 20, wherein the user input device comprises a trigger. 26. The system of claim 1, wherein the hood further includes a groove formed in the exterior of the hood for securing the elongate member. 27. The system of claim 1, wherein each ligation band is disposed between two adjacent retaining structures and contacts each adjacent retaining structure. 28. The endoscope of claim 10, wherein the hood further includes a groove formed in the exterior of the hood for securing the elongate member. 29. The kit of claim 20, wherein the hood further includes a groove formed in the exterior of the hood for securing the elongate member. 30. The kit of claim 20, wherein each ligation band is disposed between two adjacent retaining structures and contacts each adjacent retaining structure. 31. An endoscope, comprising: an elongated shaft with a proximal end and a distal end;a banding apparatus fixedly coupled to the distal end of the shaft; wherein the banding apparatus comprises: a hood that projects distally from the distal end of the shaft, which is adapted to receive a plurality of ligation bands and includes a plurality of ridges extending radially outwards from an exterior surface of the hood, each ligation band being disposed between adjacent ridges and contacting each adjacent ridge; andan elongate member configured to individually deploy each of the plurality of ligation bands,wherein prior to applying tension to the elongate member, the elongate member is arranged over each ridge and under each ligation band such that the elongate member contacts an apex of each ridge and wherein, upon tension of the elongate member, a ligation band closest to the distal end of the shaft is released; anda handle fixedly attached to the endoscope, the handle including an actuator configured to actuate the elongate member.
