There may be a controller connected to an actuator, for example a fuel control actuator, of the engine and to emissions sensors, such as an NOx and/or PM sensor, proximate to an exhaust output of the engine. The controller, for example a speed controller, may have an input connected to an output of a pedal or desired speed setting mechanism. A speed sensor at a power output of the engine may be connected to an input of the controller.

An engine controller for controlling at least part of an engine of a vehicle, the engine controller comprising: one or more inputs for receiving one or more input signals from one or more emission sensors that are configured to detect NOx and PM emissions of an engine, wherein the NOx emissions and the PM emissions are dependent on each other and generally fall along a NOx-PM operating curve during operation of the engine;two or more outputs for providing control signals to two or more actuators that control two or more inputs to the engine;a controller coupled to the one or more inputs and the two or more outputs, the controller implementing a multi-parameter control algorithm that is configured to use the one or more input signals, and adjust two or more actuators of the engine via the two or more outputs to control the NOx emissions and the PM emissions of the engine such that both the NOx emissions and the PM emissions of the engine remain within corresponding NOx and PM emission limits; andthe multi-parameter control algorithm is configured to rely on the one or more inputs that correspond to the NOx emissions along a first part of the NOx-PM operating curve, rely on the one or more inputs that correspond to the PM emissions along a second part of the NOx-PM operating curve, and rely on the one or more inputs that correspond to the NOx and PM emissions along a third part of the NOx-PM operating curve. 2. The engine controller of claim 1, wherein the one or more emission sensors include a first emission sensor for sensing NOx emissions of the engine and a second emission sensor for sensing PM emissions of the engine. 3. The engine controller of claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to optimize a performance index, wherein the performance index includes terms that are related to the NOx emission and the PM emission of the engine, where the NOx emissions vary as a function of the PM emissions, and the PM emissions vary as a function of the NOx emissions. 4. The engine controller of claim 1, wherein one of the two or more outputs is configured to adjust a fuel actuator. 5. The engine controller of claim 1, wherein the multi-parameter control algorithm includes one or more predictive control loops. 6. The engine controller of claim 5, wherein the one or more predictive control loops include one or more constraints. 7. The engine controller of claim 1, wherein the multi-parameter control algorithm comprises a look-up table. 8. The engine controller of claim 1, wherein one of the two or more outputs is configured adjust a manifold air flow (MAF). 9. The engine controller of claim 1, wherein the two or more outputs are configured to adjust an EGR valve and/or a turbocharger. 10. An engine controller for controlling at least part of an engine of a vehicle, the engine controller comprising: one or more inputs for receiving one or more input signals from one or more emission sensors that are configured to detect NOx emissions and/or PM emissions of an engine, wherein the NOx emissions and the PM emissions are dependent on each other and generally fall along a NOx-PM operating curve during operation of the engine;two or more outputs for providing control signals to two or more actuators that control two or more inputs of the engine;a controller coupled to the one or more inputs and the two or more outputs, the controller implementing a multi-parameter control algorithm that is configured to use the one or more input signals, and adjust the two or more actuators of the engine via the two or more outputs, to control the NOx and/or the PM emissions of the engine; andthe multi-parameter control algorithm is configured to rely on the one or more inputs that correspond to the NOx emissions along a first part of the NOx-PM operating curve, rely on the one or more inputs that correspond to the PM emissions along a second part of the NOx-PM operating curve, and rely on the one or more inputs that correspond to the NOx and PM emissions along a third part of the NOx-PM operating curve. 11. The engine controller of claim 10, wherein the controller is configured to optimize a performance index, wherein the performance index includes terms that vary as a function of the NOx and the PM emissions of the engine. 12. The engine controller of claim 11, wherein the multi-parameter control algorithm comprises one or more control constraints for one or more of the actuators such that the one or more actuators are constrained to a specified operating range. 13. The engine controller of claim 10, wherein the multi-parameter control algorithm comprises one or more control constraints that constrain the NOx emissions and/or the PM emissions of the engine such that both the NOx and PM emissions of the engine remain within specified NOx and PM limits. 14. An engine controller for controlling at least part of an engine of a vehicle, the engine controller comprising: a first input for receiving an input from an NOx sensor;a second input for receiving an input from a PM sensor;wherein the NOx emissions and the PM emissions are dependent on each other and generally fall along a NOx-PM operating curve during operation of an engine;one or more outputs for providing one or more control signals to one or more actuators that control one or more inputs to an engine;a controller coupled to the first and second inputs and the one or more outputs, the controller implementing a multi-parameter control algorithm that is configured to receive the first and second input signals from the NOx and PM sensors and adjust the one or more actuators of the engine to make a change to one or more of the inputs to the engine in order to produce a controlled change in each of the NOx emissions and the PM emissions of the engine; andthe multi-parameter control algorithm is configured to rely on the one or more inputs that correspond to the NOx emissions along a first part of the NOx-PM operating curve, rely on the one or more inputs that correspond to the PM emissions along a second part of the NOx-PM operating curve, and rely on the one or more inputs that correspond to the NOx and PM emissions along a third part of the NOx-PM operating curve. 15. The engine controller of claim 14, wherein the controller is configured adjust a fuel actuator via the one or more outputs. 16. The engine controller of claim 14, further including a third input for receiving an input from an engine speed sensor. 17. The engine controller of claim 14, wherein the multi-parameter control algorithm includes one or more predictive control loops. 18. The engine controller of claim 14, wherein the multi-parameter control algorithm comprises a look-up table. 19. The engine controller of claim 18, wherein the look-up table includes parameters consistent with a multi-parametric hybrid algorithm. 20. The engine controller of claim 14, wherein the multi-parameter control algorithm comprises one or more control constraints.
