A catheter is adapted to exchange heat with a body fluid, such as blood, flowing in a body conduit, such as a blood vessel. The catheter includes a shaft with a heat exchange region disposed at its distal end. This region may include hollow fibers which are adapted to receive a remotely cooled heat exchange fluid preferably flowing in a direction counter to that of the body fluid. The hollow fibers enhance the surface area of contact, as well as the mixing of both the heat exchange fluid and the body fluid. The catheter can be positioned to produce hypothermia in a selective area of the body or alternatively positioned to systemically cool the entire body system.

1. Heat exchange catheter, comprising: a distally located heat exchange region positionable in a blood vessel of a patient, the heat exchange region configured to bear heat exchange fluid flowing through the heat exchange region to exchange heat with a blood in the blood vessel, the heat exchange fluid not exiting the catheter into the blood vessel and the heat exchange region not blocking the blood vessel when heat exchange fluid flows through the heat exchange region such that blood flows past the heat exchange region in the blood vessel, the heat exchange region including plural axially extending inflatable balloons forming respective balloon cavities through which the heat exchange fluid flows continuously to effect heat exchange with the blood, the balloons through which the heat exchange fluid flows being spiral-shaped, the balloons being coaxial with a central inner tube in fluid communication therewith. 2. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the balloons are formed from several individual balloons. 3. The catheter of claim 1, wherein a single sheet of material forms the plural balloons. 4. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the catheter includes a catheter shaft having an inflow lumen through which the heat exchange fluid flows into the heat exchange region and an outflow lumen through which heat exchange fluid from the heat exchange region flows back to an extracorporeal heat exchanger. 5. The catheter of claim 4, wherein the shaft includes an outer tube having an outer surface to which balloons are attached. 6. The catheter of claim 5, comprising a distal sealing plug in the outer tube. 7. The catheter of claim 5, wherein the inner tube is disposed with the outer tube, one or more inlet holes in the inner tube providing flow fluid communication between the inner tube and the balloon cavities. 8. The catheter of claim 7, comprising one or more outlet holes providing fluid communication between the balloon cavities and the outer tube. 9. The catheter of claim 7, comprising an inner plug disposed between the inner tube and outer tube to establish a seal between a lumen of the outer tube and one or more of: the inlet holes and outlet holes. 10. Apparatus comprising: a catheter body having at least one heat exchange fluid lumen; andat least one heat exchange region communicating with the lumen such that heat exchange fluid is flowing continuously through the heat exchange region to exchange heat with blood of a patient when the heat exchange region is positioned in a bloodstream of the patient, the heat exchange fluid not entering the bloodstream, wherein the heat exchange region includes plural axially extending inflatable balloons forming respective balloon cavities through which the heat exchange fluid flows, the balloons each having a spiral configuration and surrounding a central inlet tube extending substantially axially co-extensively with the balloons through their length, the balloons being in fluid communication with the inlet tube for circulating heat exchange fluid therebetween. 11. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the balloons are formed from several individual balloons. 12. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein a single sheet of material forms the plural balloons. 13. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the body establishes a shaft having an inflow lumen through which the heat exchange fluid flows into the heat exchange region and an outflow lumen through which heat exchange fluid from the heat exchange region flows back to an extracorporeal heat exchanger. 14. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the shaft includes an outer tube having an outer surface to which balloons are attached. 15. The apparatus of claim 14, comprising a distal sealing plug in the outer tube. 16. The apparatus of claim 14, comprising an inner tube disposed with the outer tube, one or more inlet holes in the inner tube providing flow fluid communication between the inner tube and the balloon cavities. 17. The apparatus of claim 16, comprising one or more outlet holes providing fluid communication between the balloon cavities and the outer tube. 18. The apparatus of claim 16, comprising an inner plug disposed between the inner tube and outer tube to establish a seal between a lumen of the outer tube and one or more of the inlet holes and outlet holes.
