In various embodiments, the present disclosure provides filtering compositions, their method of production, and methods for their use. In specific implementations, the filtering composition includes lanthanum and has a surface area of at least about 125 g/m 2. In more specific examples, the filtering composition is free-flowing or has a moisture content between about 10 wt % about 30 wt %. Particular compositions include at least one of iron or magnesium. Some embodiments of the present disclosure provide filtering compositions that are resilient or leach-resistant.

1. A free-flowing granular filtering composition comprising lanthanum, iron, and a diatomaceous earth support, the filtering composition having surface area of at least about 175 m2/g, which removes solutes from aqueous solutions by adsorption. 2. The filtering composition of claim 1, wherein the solutes comprise anions. 3. The filtering composition of claim 1, further comprising magnesium. 4. The filtering composition of claim 1, wherein the filtering composition has a surface area of at least about 200 m2/g. 5. The filtering composition of claim 1, wherein the filtering composition has a moisture content between about 10 wt % and about 30 wt %. 6. The filtering composition of claim 1, wherein the filtering composition has a density of between about 0.6 g/cc and about 1.0 g/cc. 7. A method of forming the filtering composition of claim 1, comprising adding a solution comprising lanthanum and iron to a basic solution. 8. The method of claim 7, wherein the basic solution comprises a diatomaceous support. 9. A free flowing filtering composition comprising lanthanum, iron and a diatomaceous earth support, the filtering composition having a surface area of at least about 175 m2/g. 10. The filtering composition of claim 9, wherein the filtering composition has a moisture content between about 10 wt % and about 30 wt %. 11. The filtering composition of claim 9, further comprising magnesium. 12. A method of forming a filtering the composition of claim 9 comprising: precipitating an active agent comprising lanthanum and iron from a solution to produce the filtering composition; anddrying the filtering composition at temperature less than about 200° C. until the filtering composition has moisture content between about 10 wt % and about 30 wt %. 13. The method of claim 12, further comprising ultrasonicating the filtering composition before drying the filtering composition. 14. The method of claim 13, wherein the filtering composition is ultrasonicated for between about 10 minutes and about 60 minutes. 15. The method of claim 12, the filtering composition further comprising magnesium. 16. The filtering composition of claim 1, the filtering composition having been manufactured by a process comprising: dissolving lanthanum nitrate and iron nitrate in a solution; anddrying the solution at a temperature less than about 200° C. to yield precipitated lanthanum hydroxide and iron hydroxide. 17. The filtering composition of claim 16, wherein the process further comprises: after dissolving, heating the solution;stirring the solution and adding sodium hydroxide to adjust PH of the solution; andsubjecting the solution to ultrasonic conditioning. 18. The filtering composition of claim 9, the filtering composition having been manufactured by a process comprising: dissolving lanthanum nitrate and iron nitrate in a solution; anddrying the solution at a temperature less than about 200° C. to yield precipitated lanthanum hydroxide and iron hydroxide. 19. The filtering composition of claim 18, wherein the process further comprises: after dissolving, heating the solution;stirring the solution and adding sodium hydroxide to adjust PH of the solution; andsubjecting the solution to ultrasonic conditioning.
