An internal combustion engine, comprising: a first piston slidably disposed in a first cylinder, the first cylinder having a closed end; a first port configured to admit a reactant to the first cylinder; a first converter operable with the first piston to convert mechanical energy of the first piston from and to electrical energy within a piston cycle; and a second piston slidably disposed in a second cylinder, wherein the engine is configured to run in a first mode in which a chemical reaction drives only the first piston while the second piston is idling, and in a second mode in which a chemical reaction drives the first piston and the second piston. 2. The engine of claim 1, wherein the first converter is configured to convert mechanical energy of the first piston to electrical energy during a power stroke, and is further configured to drive the first piston during at least one stroke selected from the group consisting of an exhaust stroke, an intake stroke, and a compression stroke. 3. The engine of claim 2, wherein the first converter is configured to drive the first piston during an exhaust stroke, an intake stroke, and a compression stroke. 4. The engine of claim 1, wherein the first piston includes a magnet. 5. The engine of claim 4, wherein the first converter includes an armature configured to generate electric current in response to movement of the magnet. 6. The engine of claim 4, wherein the first converter includes an armature operable to move the magnet by driving electric current through a coil. 7. The engine of claim 4, wherein the first converter includes a plurality of coils. 8. The engine of claim 7, wherein a first subset of the plurality of coils is operable to convert electrical energy to mechanical energy of the first piston, and a second subset of the plurality of coils is operable to convert mechanical energy of the first piston to electrical energy. 9. The engine of claim 1, further comprising a thermal controller that acts to limit thermal excursions of at least a portion of the engine. 10. The engine of claim 1, further comprising a reaction trigger, the reaction trigger being configured to initiate a chemical reaction in a reactant disposed between the first piston and the closed end of the first cylinder. 11. The engine of claim 10, wherein the reaction trigger draws power from the first converter. 12. The engine of claim 10, wherein the reaction trigger is electrically coupled to the first converter. 13. The engine of claim 10, wherein power is supplied to the reaction trigger from an energy management system coupled to the first converter. 14. The engine of claim 1, wherein the first port includes at least one valve. 15. The engine of claim 14, further comprising a camshaft configured to open or close the at least one valve by rotation of the camshaft. 16. The engine of claim 15, further comprising an electromagnetic actuator configured to rotate the camshaft. 17. The engine of claim 14, wherein the valve is electromagnetically actuated. 18. The engine of claim 1, further comprising a second port configured to allow a reaction product to escape from the first cylinder. 19. The engine of claim 18, wherein the first port includes an intake valve and wherein the second port includes an exhaust valve, the intake valve and the exhaust valve each configured to open and close at selected times during a piston cycle, wherein the intake valve and the exhaust valve are mechanically coupled to the first piston to control valve timing. 20. The engine of claim 18, wherein the first port includes an intake valve and wherein the second port includes an exhaust valve, the intake valve and the exhaust valve each configured to open and close at selected times during a piston cycle, wherein the intake valve and the exhaust valve are electronically coupled to the first piston to control valve timing. 21. The engine of claim 1, wherein the first port is configured to allow a reaction product to escape from the first cylinder. 22. The engine of claim 21, further comprising a valve configured to switch the first port from connection with an intake path to connection with an exhaust path. 23. The engine of claim 1, wherein the first port is configured to admit fuel to the first cylinder. 24. The engine of claim 1, wherein the first port is configured to admit oxidizer to the first cylinder. 25. The engine of claim 1, wherein the first port is configured to admit a reactant mixture to the first cylinder. 26. The engine of claim 1, further comprising a second port configured to admit a reactant to the first cylinder, wherein the first port is configured to admit a first reactant and the second port is configured to admit a second reactant. 27. The engine of claim 1, wherein the first piston is connected to a crankshaft. 28. The engine of claim 1, wherein the first piston and the second piston are configured for asynchronous reciprocation. 33. The engine of claim 1, wherein the engine is configured to determine a velocity profile of a piston stroke in response to actual or predicted operating conditions. 34. The engine of claim 1, wherein the engine is configured to determine a length of a piston stroke in response to actual or predicted operating conditions. 35. The engine of claim 1, wherein the first piston is configured to rotate in the first cylinder. 36. The engine of claim 1, wherein the first piston is coupled to a mechanism that converts piston travel to a rotary movement. 37.
