The multi-material face allows for improved playing characteristics by allowing the club designer to use a thinner face and lighter body material while still providing improved face wear resistance and durability.

A golf club head, comprising: a body comprising a striking face that defines a striking surface,wherein the striking face comprises a base material, a plating material disposed on an outer surface of the base material, a first set of grooves having a first pattern and a second set of grooves having a second pattern different than the first pattern,wherein the first set of grooves and the second set of grooves extend into the striking face from the striking surface,wherein the depth of the second set of grooves is greater than the thickness of the plating material, andwherein the first set of grooves and the second set of grooves at least partially overlap. 2. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the first set of grooves includes a plurality of parallel grooves and the second set of grooves includes a plurality of parallel grooves. 3. The golf club head of claim 2, wherein the second set of grooves is oriented at an angle relative to the first set of grooves. 4. The golf club head of claim 2, wherein the second set of grooves includes a plurality of arced grooves. 5. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the depth of the first set of grooves is greater than the thickness of the plating material. 6. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the second set of grooves is arranged in a swirl pattern. 7. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the second set of grooves includes a plurality of grooves that are arranged in a starburst pattern. 8. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the striking face is a striking face insert that is attached to the body. 9. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the second set of grooves is centered in the lower central portion of the striking surface. 10. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the second set of grooves is centered between about 0.4 inch and about 0.8 inch above a leading edge of the club head. 11. A golf club head, comprising: a body; anda striking face insert attached to the body and defining a striking surface,wherein the striking face insert comprises a base material, a plating material disposed on an outer surface of the base material, a first set of grooves having a first pattern including a plurality of parallel grooves and a second set of grooves having a second pattern different than the first pattern and at least partially overlapping the first set of grooves,wherein the first set of grooves and the second set of grooves extend into the striking face from the striking surface,wherein the depth of the second set of grooves is less than the depth of the first set of grooves, andwherein the depth of the second set of grooves is greater than the thickness of the plating. 12. The golf club head of claim 11, wherein the second set of grooves includes a plurality of parallel grooves. 13. The golf club head of claim 12, wherein the second set of grooves includes a plurality of grooves oriented at an angle relative to the first set of grooves. 14. The golf club head of claim 12, wherein the second set of grooves includes a plurality of arced grooves. 15. The golf club head of claim 11, wherein the second set of grooves are arranged in a starburst pattern. 16. The golf club head of claim 11, wherein the second set of grooves is centered in the lower central portion of the striking surface. 17. The golf club head of claim 11, wherein the second set of grooves is centered between about 0.4 inch and about 0.8 inch above a leading edge of the club head. 18.
