A cochlear implant for a cochlear stimulation system and method of assembling the implant comprising an implantable sealed housing comprising a metal feedthrough case and a metal bottom cover and containing cochlea stimulation circuitry, the feedthrough case comprising silicone enclosed feedthrough pins for connecting an electrical lead of a cochlear electrode to the stimulation circuitry, and a moisture absorbing material comprising calcium oxide secured within the housing and sufficient in quantity to absorb moisture released by the circuitry materials and leaking into the feedthrough case at leak rates of about 1×10−7 atm cc/s to maintain the cochlear implant within acceptable internal moisture limits for at least about 60 years.

In a cochlear stimulator system, a cochlear implant comprising: an implantable sealed housing comprising a metal feedthrough case having separate sealed top and bottom compartments and metal feedthrough pins extending between the top and bottom compartments and having upper and lower end portions respectively within the top and bottom compartments,cochlea stimulation circuitry housed with the bottom compartment and electrically connected to lower end portions of the feedthrough pins, upper end portions of the feedthrough pins being electrically connected to a lead from a cochlear electrode to complete a connection between the stimulation circuitry and the cochlear electrode,silicone enclosing upper end portions of the feedthrough pins configured to limit any moisture leaking around the feedthrough pins from the top compartment to the bottom compartment housing the stimulation circuitry to leak rates less than about 1×10−7 atm cc/s, anda moisture absorbing material secured within the bottom compartment of the feedthrough case and comprising calcium oxide sufficient in quantity to absorb any moisture released by the stimulation circuitry and any moisture leaking into the bottom compartment of the feedthrough case at the leak rates less than about 1×10−7 atm cc/s and to extend the useful life of the implant. 2. The implant of claim 1 wherein the moisture absorbing material comprises cured HiCap 2000. 3. The implant of claim 1 wherein the metal feedthrough pins are insulated by seals enclosed in silicone that are configured to form moisture leak paths having moisture leak rates less than about 1×10−7 atm cc/s and wherein the quantity of moisture absorbing material secured within the sealed housing is configured to extend the useful operating life of the implant to 60 years or more. 4. The implant of claim 3 wherein the outer surface of the sealed housing is covered with silicone sufficient to limit any moisture leaking into the bottom compartment of the housing to leak rates less than 1×10−7 atm cc/s. 5. The implant of claim 3 wherein the weight of the moisture absorbing material as cured is at least about 30 mg. 6. The implant of claim 5 wherein the weight of the moisture absorbing material as cured is less than about 50 mg. 7. The implant of claim 5 wherein the moisture absorbing material has an exposed surface area of at least 0.15 in.2. 8. The implant of claim 5 wherein the moisture absorbing material has an exposed surface area of about 0.25 in.2. 9. The implant of claim 5 wherein the moisture absorbing material has a thickness of between about 0.002 inches and about 0.010 inches. 10. The implant of claim 5 wherein the moisture absorbing material is secured to a metal bottom cover enclosing the bottom compartment within the feedthrough case. 11. The implant of claim 10 wherein the bottom cover includes a vent hole free of the moisture absorbing material that is sealed after a curing of the moisture absorbing material. 12. The implant of claim 10 wherein the bottom cover includes an outer border free of the moisture absorbing material. 13. The implant of claim 5 wherein the moisture absorbing material is secured to the feedthrough case. 14. The implant of claim 5 wherein the moisture absorbing material is secured within and directly to the housing, and a film of insulating material is secured to a top of the moisture absorbing material. 15. The implant of claim 5 wherein a film of insulating material is secured within and directly to the housing, and the moisture absorbing material is secured to a top of the film. 16. A method of assembling the cochlear implant of claim 1 characterized by an extended useful operating life of about 60 or more years, comprising: providing an implantable sealed housing characterized by a moisture leak rate of less than about 1×10−7 atm cc/s and comprising a metal feedthrough case having a metal bottom cover and feedthrough pins for connecting an electrical lead from a cochlear electrode to cochlea simulation circuitry within the feedthrough case;placing cochlear stimulation circuitry within the feedthrough case and connecting the circuitry to the feedthrough pins;enclosing the feedthrough pins in silicone;securing within the housing at least 30 mg of a cured moisture absorbing material comprising calcium oxide, andsealing the feedthrough case with the bottom cover. 17. The method of claim 16 wherein the securing comprises applying the moisture absorbing material so that it has an exposed surface area of between about 0.15 in.2 and 0.38 in.2. 18. The method of claim 16 wherein the securing comprises applying the moisture absorbing material so that it has an exposed surface area of about 0.25 in.2. 19. The method of claim 16 wherein the securing comprises applying the moisture absorbing material so that it has a thickness of between about 0.002 inches and about 0.010 inches. 20. The method of claim 16 wherein the securing comprises: applying a moisture absorbing material containing a desiccant material and a solvent; andcuring the moisture absorbing material to evaporate the solvent. 21. The method of claim 20 wherein the sealing comprises laser welding the bottom cover to the feedthrough case. 22. The method of claim 16 wherein the securing comprises: applying a moisture absorbing material containing a desiccant, a solvent, and a thermoplastic; andcuring the moisture absorbing material to evaporate the solvent, melt the thermoplastic, and bond the thermoplastic to the housing. 23. The method of claim 22 wherein the curing is in a oven at about 160° C. for at least 30 minutes. 24. The method of claim 22 wherein the curing is for one to two hours. 25. The method of claim 22 wherein the sealing comprises laser welding the bottom cover to the feedthrough case. 26. The method of claim 25 further including sealing a vent hole in the feedthrough case. 27. The method of claim 16 wherein the securing comprises applying the moisture absorbing material to the bottom cover. 28. The method of claim 16 wherein the securing comprises applying the moisture absorbing material to the feedthrough case. 29. The method of claim 16 wherein the securing comprises applying the moisture absorbing material directly to the housing, and further comprises securing a film of insulating material over and to the moisture absorbing material. 30. The method of claim 16 further comprising: securing a film of insulating material to the housing; andapplying the moisture absorbing material to the film.
