The present disclosure describes a surgical fastener applying apparatus that includes an elongate body portion having proximal and distal ends, an end effector including a first movably coupled to a second jaw that is positioned at the distal end of the elongate body portion, and an introducer member. The introducer member has proximal and distal portions, and is configured and dimensioned for releasable connection with the end effector. The introducer member is at least partially formed from a flexible material, and is configured and dimensioned to separate target tissue from collateral tissue prior to positioning of the target tissue between the first and second jaws of the end effector.

The surgical fastener applying apparatus of claim 1, wherein the proximal end of the connector member includes first attachment structure and the distal end of the connector member includes second attachment structure, the dissector tip including first engagement structure corresponding in configuration and dimensions to the first attachment structure, the proximal portion of the introducer member including second engagement structure for engaging the second attachment structure. 3. The surgical fastener applying apparatus of claim 2, wherein the first engagement structure is formed on the anvil component. 4. The surgical fastener applying apparatus of claim 2, wherein the first attachment structure of the connector member and the first engagement structure of the anvil component are configured and dimensioned for connection in snap-fit arrangement. 5. The surgical fastener applying apparatus of claim 2, wherein the first attachment structure of the connector member and the first engagement structure of the anvil component are configured and dimensioned to provide an audible indication upon connection. 6. The surgical fastener applying apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first jaw includes an anvil component and the second jaw includes a surgical fastener cartridge, the surgical fastener cartridge being configured and dimensioned to retain a plurality of surgical fasteners therein. 7. The surgical fastener applying apparatus of claim 6, wherein the dissector tip forms the terminal end of the first jaw. 8. The surgical fastener applying apparatus of claim 1, wherein the proximal portion of the introducer member includes a hollow that is configured and dimensioned to at least partially receive the connector member. 9. The surgical fastener applying apparatus of claim 8, wherein the proximal portion of the introducer member is at least partially formed from a flexible material such that receipt of the connector member causes outward expansion of the proximal portion of the introducer member to create an interference fit therebetween. 10. The surgical fastener applying apparatus of claim 9, wherein the distal end of the connector member comprises a series of tapered portions progressively decreasing in transverse dimension in a distal direction to define a plurality of ridges for frictionally engaging the proximal portion of the introducer member. 11. A guide for use with a surgical fastener applying apparatus comprising an end effector including first and second movable jaws, the guide being configured and dimensioned to separate target tissue from collateral tissue prior to positioning of the target tissue between the first and second jaws, the guide including an introducer member longer than each of the first and second jaws, and a connector member being configured and dimensioned for releasable, contemporaneous engagement with a dissector tip of the end effector and with the introducer member such that the connector member is positionable between the end effector and the introducer member to releasably couple the introducer member to the end effector, wherein the connector member is formed from a biocompatible material suitable for contact with a patient's internal tissue during a surgical procedure that is more rigid than the introducer member. 12. The guide of claim 11 wherein the connector member includes a proximal end having first attachment structure and a distal end having second attachment structure, the first attachment structure corresponding in configuration and dimensions to first engagement structure associated with at least one of the first and second jaws of the end effector, and the second attachment structure corresponding in configuration and dimensions to second engagement structure associated with the introducer member. 13. The guide of claim 11, wherein the introducer member is at least partially formed from a flexible material. 14. The guide of claim 13, wherein a proximal end of the introducer member includes a hollow that is configured and dimensioned to at least partially receive the connector member. 15. The guide of claim 13, wherein the connector member includes a distal portion configured and dimensioned for positioning within the hollow of the introducer member, the distal portion of the connector member comprising a series of tapered portions progressively decreasing in transverse dimension in a distal direction to define a plurality of ridges, whereby positioning of the distal portion of the connector member within the hollow causes outward expansion of the introducer member to create an interference fit between the introducer member and the connector member.
