A V-grooved composite insulation is provided with an adhesive coating and a protective jacketing material bonded to the adhesive. The protective jacketing material extends beyond the perimeter of the grooved insulation board and comprises at least one intact release layer at a location in which the protective jacketing is clear of contact with the bottom surface of the insulation member and a pressure sensitive adhesive between the portion of the protective jacketing material and the at least one release layer. The method also comprises preshaping the grooved insulation board around a pipe by bending the grooved insulation board, removing the release layer of the protective jacketing material, thereby exposing the pressure sensitive adhesive and securing the pressure sensitive adhesive to the protective jacketing to thereby surround the pipe in a vapor free manner. Grooved insulation boards with protective jacketing so constructed are also provided.

1. A flat, rectangular composite insulation, comprising: an insulation member having a top surface and a bottom surface and pores in at least the bottom surface;an adhesive coating disposed on the bottom surface of the insulation member and at least partially within the pores;a protective jacketing material having an inner surface that includes a pre-applied adhesive that is disposed in direct contact with the adhesive coating to securely attach the jacketing material to the insulation member, the pre-applied adhesive on the protective jacketing being separate from the adhesive coating; anda plurality of V-grooves defined at spaced intervals in the top surface of the insulation member and extending through the insulation member to a point proximal to the protective jacketing, each of said plurality of V-grooves being defined by a pair of opposed faces, with pairs of opposed faces being selectively urgeable to an abutting relationship with one another to define at least one substantially curved portion along the outer surface of the protective jacketing material. 2. The composite insulation of claim 1, wherein the insulation member is comprised of mineral wool. 3. The composite insulation of claim 1, wherein the insulation member has a perimeter and wherein the protective jacketing material extends beyond the perimeter and comprises intact release layers at locations in which the protective jacketing is clear of contact with the bottom surface of the insulation member. 4. The composite insulation of claim 1, wherein the insulation member is comprised of two adjacent dissimilar insulating materials. 5. The composite insulation of claim 1, wherein the insulation member is comprised of two or more layered, dissimilar insulating materials. 6. The composite insulation of claim 1, wherein at least some of said V-grooves have an adhesive coating on at least one face of said V-grooves. 7. The composite insulation of claim 1, wherein the insulation member comprises three dissimilar insulating materials. 8. The composite insulation of claim 3, wherein a plurality of flexible bands are spaced across and fixedly attached to the outer surface of said protective jacketing material, said bands extending beyond the perimeter of said insulation member a length sufficient to permit attachment of said band ends together. 9. The composite insulation of claim 4, wherein the insulation member comprises two dissimilar materials, both being made of rigid materials. 10. The composite insulation of claim 4, wherein the two dissimilar insulating materials are comprised of one rigid material and one flexible material. 11. The composite insulation of claim 8, wherein all of said V-grooves except the center V-groove of the section has an adhesive coating on one face of said V-groove, thereby forming a hinge at the center V-groove. 12. The composite insulation of claim 9, wherein one rigid material is a mineral wool and the other rigid material is a glass foam. 13. The composite insulation of claim 9, wherein one rigid material is a mineral wool and the other rigid material is a polyurethane foam. 14. The composite insulation of claim 9, wherein one rigid material is a mineral wool and the other rigid material is a rigid ceramic fiber layer. 15. The composite insulation of claim 10, wherein the rigid material is a mineral wool and the flexible material is a polyurethane foam. 16. The composite insulation of claim 10, wherein the rigid material is a mineral wool and the flexible material is a flexible ceramic fiber blanket. 17. A flat, rectangular composite insulation, comprising: an insulation member having a top surface and a bottom surface and pores in at least the bottom surface;an adhesive coating disposed on the bottom surface of the insulation member and at least partially within the pores;a flexible backing layer having an inner surface and an outer surface, the inner surface being in contact with the adhesive coating;a protective jacketing material having an inner surface in contact with the outer surface of said backing layer, wherein said protective jacketing material's inner surface comprises a pre-applied pressure sensitive adhesive, and wherein the pressure sensitive adhesive is bonded to the outer surface of the backing layer; anda plurality of V-grooves defined at spaced intervals in the top surface of the insulation member and extending through the insulation member to a point proximal to the flexible backing layer, each of said plurality of V-grooves being defined by a pair of opposed faces, with pairs of opposed faces being selectively urgeable to an abutting relationship with one another to define at least one substantially curved portion along the outer surface of the flexible protective jacketing material. 18. The composite insulation of claim 17, wherein the insulation member is comprised of mineral wool.
