Disclosed are multicomponent fibers derived from a blend of a sulfopolyester with a water non-dispersible polymer wherein the as-spun denier is less than about 6 and wherein the water dispersible sulfopolyester exhibits a melt viscosity of less than 12,000 poise measured at 240° C. at a strain rate of 1 rad/sec, and wherein the sulfopolyester comprising less than about 25 mole % of residues of at least one sulfomonomer, based on the total moles of diacid or diol residues. The multicomponent fiber is capable of being drawn at a relatively high fiber speed, particularly at least about 2000 m/min, and may be used to produce microdenier fibers. Fibrous articles may be produced from the multicomponent fibers and microdenier fibers. Also disclosed is a process for multicomponent fibers, nonwoven fabrics, and microdenier webs.

A woven article comprising at least one multicomponent fiber with a shaped cross section wherein said multicomponent fiber comprises: (A) at least one water dispersible sulfopolyester; and(B) a plurality of domains comprising at least one water non-dispersible polymer immiscible with said sulfopo

A woven article comprising at least one multicomponent fiber with a shaped cross section wherein said multicomponent fiber comprises: (A) at least one water dispersible sulfopolyester; and(B) a plurality of domains comprising at least one water non-dispersible polymer immiscible with said sulfopolyester, wherein said domains are substantially isolated from each other by said sulfopolyester intervening between said domains;wherein said water dispersible sulfopolyester exhibits a melt viscosity of less than about 12,000 poise measured at 240° C. at a strain rate of 1 rad/sec, said sulfopolyester comprising less than about 25 mole % of residues of at least one sulfomonomer, based on the total moles of diacid or diol residues. 2. The woven article according to claim 1 wherein said shaped cross section is an islands-in-the-sea, segmented pie, or side by side configuration. 3. The woven article according to claim 1 wherein said fiber contains less than 10 weight percent of a pigment or filler, based on the total weight of said fiber. 4. A woven article comprising at least one multicomponent fiber; wherein said multicomponent fiber has a shaped cross section, and wherein said multicomponent fiber comprises: (A) at least one water dispersible sulfopolyester; and(B) a plurality of domains comprising one or more water non-dispersible polymers immiscible with said sulfopolyester, wherein said domains are substantially isolated from each other by said sulfopolyester intervening between said domains,wherein said fiber has an as-spun denier of less than about 6 denier per filament;wherein said water dispersible sulfopolyester exhibits a melt viscosity of less than about 12,000 poise measured at 240° C. at a strain rate of 1 rad/sec, said sulfopolyester comprising less than about 25 mole % of residues of at least one sulfomonomer, based on the total moles of diacid or diol residues. 5. A woven article comprising at least one multicomponent fiber which comprises at least one water dispersible sulfopolyester and at least one water-nondispersible polymer immiscible with said sulfopolyester; wherein said water dispersible sulfopolyester has a Tg of at least 40° C. and exhibits a melt viscosity of less than about 12,000 poise measured at 240° C. at a strain rate of 1 rad/sec; and wherein said sulfopolyester comprises less than about 25 mole % of residues of at least one sulfomonomer, based on the total moles of diacid or diol residues. 6. The woven article according to claim 5 wherein said multicomponent fiber comprises a plurality of segments comprising said water-nondispersible polymer and wherein said segments are substantially isolated from each other by said sulfopolyester intervening between said segments. 7. The woven article according to claim 1, 4 or 5 wherein said water dispersible sulfopolyester exhibits a melt viscosity of less than about 6000 poise measured at 240° C. at a strain rate of 1 rad/sec. 8. The woven article according to claim 5 wherein said sulfopolyester comprises less than about 15 mole % of said residues of at least one sulfomonomer, based on the total moles of diacid or diol residues. 9. The woven article according to claim 5 wherein said sulfopolyester comprises between about 4 to about 25 mole % of said residues of at least one sulfomonomer. 10. The woven article according to claim 5 wherein said sulfopolyester comprises: (A) residues of one or more dicarboxylic acids;(B) about 5 to about 20 mole % of said residues of at least one sulfomonomer, based on the total moles of diacid or diol residues, wherein said sulfomonomer has 2 functional groups and one or more sulfonate groups attached to an aromatic or cycloaliphatic ring wherein said functional groups are hydroxyl, carboxyl, or a combination thereof; and(C) residues of one or more diols. 11. The woven article according to claim 5 wherein said sulfopolyester comprises: (A) residues of one or more dicarboxylic acids;(B) about 5 to about 20 mole % of said residues of at least one sulfomonomer, based on the total moles of diacid or diol residues, wherein said sulfomonomer has 2 functional groups and one or more sulfonate groups attached to an aromatic or cycloaliphatic ring wherein said functional groups are hydroxyl, carboxyl, or a combination thereof;(C) one or more diol residues wherein at least 5 mole %, based on the total diol residues, is a poly(ethylene glycol) having a structure H—(OCH2—CH2)n—OH wherein n is an integer in the range of 2 to about 500; and D) 0 to about 25 mole %, based on the total repeating units, of residues of at least one branching monomer having 3 or more functional groups wherein said functional groups are hydroxyl, carboxyl, or a combination thereof. 12. The woven article according to claim 10 wherein said dicarboxylic acids are selected from the group consisting of aliphatic diacids, cycloaliphatic dicarboxylic acids, aromatic dicarboxylic acids, and combinations thereof. 13. The woven article according to claim 10 wherein said dicarboxylic acids are selected from the group consisting of succinic, glutaric, adipic, azelaic, sebacic, fumaric, maleic, itaconic, 1,3-cyclohexane dicarboxylic, 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic, diglycolic, 2,5-norbornanedicarboxylic, phthalic, terephthalic, 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic, 2,5-naphthalenedicarboxylic, 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic, 2,7-naphthalenedicarboxylic, diphenic, 4,4′-oxydibenzoic, 4,4′-sulfonyldibenzoic, isophthalic, and combinations thereof. 14. The woven article according to claim 10 wherein said sulfomonomer is a metal sulfonate salt of a sulfophthalic acid, sulfoterephthalic acid, sulfoisophthalic acid, or combinations thereof. 15. The woven article according to claim 10 wherein said diol residues are selected from the group consisting of ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, poly(ethylene)glycols, 1,3-propanediol, 2,4-dimethyl-2-ethylhexane-1,3-diol, 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediol, 2-ethyl-2-butyl-1,3-propanediol, 2-ethyl-2-isobutyl-1,3-propanediol, 1,3-butanediol, 1,4-butanediol, 1,5-pentanediol, 1,6-hexanediol, 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,6-hexanediol, thiodiethanol, 1,2-cyclohexanedimethanol, 1,3-cyclohexanedimethanol, 1,4-cyclohexane-dimethanol, 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol, p-xylylenediol, and combinations thereof. 16. The woven article according to claim 1, 4 or 5 wherein said multicomponent fiber contains less than 8 weight percent of a pigment or filler, based on the total weight of said multicomponent fiber. 17. The woven article according to claim 1 wherein said water non-dispersible polymer is selected from the group consisting of polyolefins, polyesters, polyamides, polylactides, polycaprolactones, polycarbonates, polyurethanes, polyvinyl chlorides, cellulose esters, and combinations thereof. 18. The woven article according to claim 1 wherein said water non-dispersible polymer is biodistintegratable as determined by DIN Standard 54900 or biodegradable as determined by ASTM Standard Method, D6340-98. 19. The woven article according to claim 1 wherein said water non-dispersible polymer is an aliphatic-aromatic polyester. 20. The woven article according to claim 1 wherein said woven article is a fabric or a garment. 21. The woven article according to claim 1 wherein said woven article comprises one or more layers. 22. A woven fabric comprising a multicomponent fiber having a shaped cross section wherein said multicomponent fiber comprises (A) at least one water dispersible sulfopolyester; and(B) a plurality of domains comprising at least one water non-dispersible polymer immiscible with said sulfopolyester, wherein said domains are substantially isolated from each other by said sulfopolyester intervening between said domains,wherein said water dispersible sulfopolyester exhibits a melt viscosity of less than about 12,000 poise measured at 240° C. at a strain rate of 1 rad/sec, said sulfopolyester comprising less than about 25 mole % of residues of at least one sulfomonomer, based on the total moles of diacid or diol residues. 23. The woven fabric according to claim 22 wherein said water dispersible sulfopolyester exhibits a melt viscosity of less than about 8000 poise measured at 240° C. at a strain rate of 1 rad/sec. 24. The woven fabric according to claim 22 wherein said water dispersible sulfopolyester exhibits a melt viscosity of less than about 6000 poise measured at 240° C. at a strain rate of 1 rad/sec. 25. The woven fabric according to claim 22 wherein said water dispersible sulfopolyester exhibits a melt viscosity of less than 4500 poise measured at 240° C. at a strain rate of 1 rad/sec. 26. The woven fabric according to claim 22 wherein said sulfopolyester comprises less than about 15 mole % of said residues of at least one sulfomonomer, based on the total moles of diacid or diol residues. 27. The woven fabric according to claim 22 wherein said plurality of domains are arranged in a segmented pie or islands in the sea cross-section configuration. 28. The woven fabric according to claim 22 wherein said sulfopolyester comprises between about 4 to about 25 mole % of said residues of at least one sulfomonomer. 29. The woven fabric according to claim 22 wherein said sulfopolyester comprises: (A) residues of one or more dicarboxylic acids;(B) about 5 to about 20 mole % of said residues of at least one sulfomonomer, based on the total moles of diacid or diol residues, wherein said sulfomonomer has 2 functional groups and one or more sulfonate groups attached to an aromatic or cycloaliphatic ring wherein said functional groups are hydroxyl, carboxyl, or a combination thereof; and(C) residues of one or more diols. 30. The woven fabric according to claim 22 wherein said sulfopolyester comprises: (A) residues of one or more dicarboxylic acids;(B) about 5 to about 20 mole % of said residues of at least one sulfomonomer, based on the total moles of diacid or diol residues, wherein said sulfomonomer has 2 functional groups and one or more sulfonate groups attached to an aromatic or cycloaliphatic ring wherein said functional groups are hydroxyl, carboxyl, or a combination thereof;(C) one or more diol residues wherein at least 5 mole %, based on the total diol residues, is a poly(ethylene glycol) having a structure H—(OCH2—CH2)n—OH wherein n is an integer in the range of 2 to about 500; and (D) 0 to about 25 mole %, based on the total repeating units, of residues of at least one branching monomer having 3 or more functional groups wherein said functional groups are hydroxyl, carboxyl, or a combination thereof. 31. The woven fabric according to claim 29 wherein said dicarboxylic acids are selected from the group consisting of aliphatic diacids, cycloaliphatic dicarboxylic acids, aromatic dicarboxylic acids, and combinations thereof. 32. The woven fabric according to claim 31 wherein said dicarboxylic acids are selected from the group consisting of succinic, glutaric, adipic, azelaic, sebacic, fumaric, maleic, itaconic, 1,3-cyclohexane dicarboxylic, 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic, diglycolic, 2,5-norbornanedicarboxylic, phthalic, terephthalic, 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic, 2,5-naphthalenedicarboxylic, 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic, 2,7-naphthalenedicarboxylic, diphenic, 4,4′-oxydibenzoic, 4,4′-sulfonyldibenzoic, isophthalic, and combinations thereof. 33. The woven fabric according to claim 29 wherein said sulfomonomer is a metal sulfonate salt of a sulfophthalic acid, sulfoterephthalic acid, sulfoisophthalic acid, or combinations thereof. 34. The woven fabric according to claim 29 wherein said diol residues are selected from the group consisting of ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, poly(ethylene)glycols, 1,3-propanediol, 2,4-dimethyl-2-ethylhexane-1,3-diol, 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediol, 2-ethyl-2-butyl-1,3-propanediol, 2-ethyl-2-isobutyl-1,3-propanediol, 1,3-butanediol, 1,4-butanediol, 1,5-pentanediol, 1,6-hexanediol, 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,6-hexanediol, thiodiethanol, 1,2-cyclohexanedimethanol, 1,3-cyclohexanedimethanol, 1,4-cyclohexane-dimethanol, 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol, p-xylylenediol, and combinations thereof. 35. The woven fabric according to claim 30 wherein said branching monomer is selected from the group consisting of 1,1,1-trimethylol propane, 1,1,1-trimethylolethane, glycerin, pentaerythritol, erythritol, threitol, dipentaerythritol, sorbitol, trimellitic anhydride, pyromellitic dianhydride, dimethylol propionic acid, and combinations thereof. 36. The woven fabric according to claim 22 wherein said multicomponent fiber contains less than 10 weight percent of a pigment or filler, based on the total weight of said fiber. 37. The woven fabric according to claim 22 wherein said water non-dispersible polymer is selected from the group consisting of polyolefins, polyesters, polyamides, polylactides, polycaprolactones, polycarbonates, polyurethanes, polyvinyl chlorides, cellulose esters, and combinations thereof. 38. The woven fabric according to claim 22 wherein said water non-dispersible polymer is biodistintegratable as determined by DIN Standard 54900 or biodegradable as determined by ASTM Standard Method, D6340-98. 39. The woven fabric according to claim 37 wherein said water non-dispersible polymer is an aliphatic-aromatic polyester. 40. A garment comprising the woven fabric according to claim 22. 41. The woven fabric according to claim 22 wherein said fabric comprises one or more layers. 42. The woven article according to claim 1 wherein said sulfopolyester further comprises residues of one or more dicarboxylic acids, wherein said residues of one or more dicarboxylic acids comprise residues of terephthalic acid. 43. The woven article according to claim 42 wherein said residues of one or more dicarboxylic acids comprise residues of isophthalic acid. 44. The woven article according to claim 42 wherein said residues of one or more dicarboxylic acids comprise about 50 to about 96 mole % of residues of terephthalic acid, based on the total acid residues. 45. The woven article according to claim 44 wherein said residues of one or more dicarboxylic acids comprise residues of isophthalic acid. 46. The woven article according to claim 42 wherein said residues of one or more dicarboxylic acids comprise about 60 to about 80 mole % of residues of terephthalic acid, based on the total acid residues. 47. The woven article according to claim 46 wherein said sulfopolyester further comprises one or more diol residues comprising ethylene glycol residues and diethylene glycol residues. 48. The woven article according to claim 42 wherein said residues of one or more dicarboxylic acids comprise at least about 50 mole % of residues of terephthalic acid, based on the total acid residues, wherein said sulfopolyester comprises at least about 4 mole % of said residues of at least one sulfomonomer, based on the total moles of diacid or diol residues, wherein said one or more diol residues comprise at least about 10 mole % of ethylene glycol residues, based on the total diol residues. 49. The woven article according to claim 48 wherein said sulfopolyester comprises no more than about 10 mole % of said residues of at least one sulfomonomer, based on the total moles of diacid or diol residues, wherein said one or more diol residues comprise at least about 40 mole % of ethylene glycol residues, based on the total diol residues. 50. The woven article according to claim 1 wherein said sulfopolyester has a Tg of at least 50° C. and exhibits a melt viscosity of less than about 10,000 poise measured at 240° C. at a strain rate of 1 rad/sec. 51. The woven article according to claim 1 wherein said sulfopolyester has a Tg of at least 57° C. and exhibits a melt viscosity of less than about 6,000 poise measured at 240° C. at a strain rate of 1 rad/sec. 52. The woven article according to claim 51 wherein said sulfopolyester comprises about 4 to about 20 mole % of said residues of at least one sulfomonomer, based on the total moles of diacid or diol residues. 53. The woven article according to claim 1 consisting essentially of said sulfopolyester and said water non-dispersible polymer.
