A method of operating an internal combustion engine including a first piston and a second piston slidably disposed in a first cylinder;a first converter operable with the first piston to convert mechanical energy of the first piston to electrical energy, and electrical energy to mechanical energy of the first piston; anda second converter operable with the second piston to convert mechanical energy of the second piston to electrical energy, and electrical energy to mechanical energy of the second piston, the method comprising:introducing a reactant into the first cylinder between the first and second pistons via an intake port while the second piston occludes an exhaust port;applying electrical energy to at least one of the first converter and the second converter to position the first piston and the second piston to compress the reactant;triggering the reactant, thereby transforming chemical potential energy to mechanical energy of at least one of the first and second pistons;converting the mechanical energy of at least one of the first piston and the second piston to electrical energy via at least one of the first converter and the second converter; andexpelling a reaction product from the first cylinder via the exhaust port while the first piston occludes the intake port. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the second piston is connected to a crankshaft. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein introducing the reactant into the first cylinder includes relatively moving the first and second pistons away from one another. 4. The method of claim 1, wherein compressing the introduced reactant comprises compressing the introduced reactant substantially adiabatically. 5. The method of claim 1, wherein compressing the introduced reactant comprises compressing the reactant substantially isothermally. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the internal combustion engine further includes a third piston slidably disposed in a second cylinder. 7. The method of claim 6, further comprising triggering a chemical reaction in the second cylinder at substantially the same time the chemical reaction is triggered in the first cylinder. 8. The method of claim 6, further comprising triggering a chemical reaction in the second cylinder at an operating frequency substantially similar to an operating frequency of the first cylinder. 9. The method of claim 6, further comprising triggering a chemical reaction in the second cylinder at a different operating frequency from an operating frequency of the first cylinder. 10. The method of claim 6, further comprising determining an actual or predicted operating condition; anddetermining whether to trigger the chemical reaction in the second cylinder on the basis of the determined operating condition. 11. The method of claim 10, wherein determining the operating condition includes determining at least one factor selected from the group consisting of incline, temperature, current draw, speed, acceleration, braking, load, fuel composition, engine emissions, power, local rules, and engine settings. 12. The method of claim 1, further comprising determining an operating frequency for the first cylinder based at least in part on an actual or predicted operating condition. 13. The method of claim 12, wherein the actual or predicted operating condition includes at least one factor selected from the group consisting of incline, temperature, current draw, speed, acceleration, braking, load, fuel composition, engine emissions, power, local rules, and engine settings. 14. The method of claim 1, further comprising determining a compression ratio for the first cylinder based at least in part on an actual or predicted operating condition. 15. The method of claim 14, wherein the actual or predicted operating condition includes at least one factor selected from the group consisting of incline, temperature, current draw, speed, acceleration, braking, load, fuel composition, engine emissions, power, local rules, and engine settings. 16. The method of claim 1, wherein triggering the chemical reaction includes generating an energy discharge. 17. The method of claim 16, wherein triggering the chemical reaction includes generating a spark. 18. The method of claim 1, wherein triggering the chemical reaction includes triggering the chemical reaction by a method selected from the group consisting of photoignition, thermal ignition, chemical ignition, exposure to a catalyst, hypergolic injection, exposure to a particle beam, and plasma injection. 19. The method of claim 1, wherein triggering the chemical reaction includes holding the first and second pistons substantially still during the chemical reaction. 20. The method of claim 19, further comprising releasing the first and second pistons when the chemical reaction is substantially complete. 21. The method of claim 1, wherein the chemical reaction produces the reaction product, and wherein converting the mechanical energy of the first piston to electrical energy includes expanding the reaction product substantially adiabatically. 22. The method of claim 1, wherein the introduced reactant includes a fuel. 23. The method of claim 22, wherein the fuel includes a hydrocarbon fuel. 24. The method of claim 22, wherein the introduced reactant further includes an oxidizer. 25. The method of claim 24, wherein the fuel and the oxidizer are mixed prior to introduction into the first cylinder. 26. The method of claim 24, wherein the fuel and the oxidizer are separately introduced into the first cylinder. 27. The method of claim 24, wherein the oxidizer includes oxygen. 28. The method of claim 27, wherein the oxidizer includes air. 29. The method of claim 1, wherein the introduced reactant includes a decomposing reactant. 30. The method of claim 1, further comprising exhausting the reaction product from the first cylinder. 31. The method of claim 1, wherein the first converter is connected to an energy management system. 32. The method of claim 31, wherein converting the mechanical energy of the first piston to electrical energy includes transferring electrical energy to the energy management system. 33. The method of claim 31, wherein applying electrical energy to the first converter includes drawing electrical energy from the energy management system. 34. The method of claim 31, wherein the energy management system includes an energy storage device. 35. The method of claim 34, wherein the energy storage device is selected from the group consisting of a battery, a capacitor, an inductor, and a mechanical energy storage device.
