The presently claimed invention relates to methods and system employing digital content. One claim recites a method including: receiving indentifying data from a remotely located handheld device, the remotely located handheld device utilizing a multi-purpose electronic processor to extract the identifying data from data representing audible portions of an audio signal, the handheld device having captured the audio signal with a microphone; using the identifying data to identify a song corresponding to the audio signal; providing a tag including information pertaining to the song to an online-based music library associated with the remotely located handheld device or a user of the remotely located handheld device. A variety of other claims and combinations are also provided.

1. A method comprising: receiving identifying data from a remotely located handheld device, wherein the remotely located handheld device utilizing a processor to derive or extract the identifying data from data representing audible portions of an audio signal, and wherein the remotely located handheld device has captured the audio signal with a microphone;using the identifying data to identify a song corresponding to the audio signal;providing a tag including information pertaining to the song to an online music library associated with the remotely located handheld device or a user of the remotely located handheld device, wherein the tag allows access to a digital file associated with the song to a person acquainted with but different than the user of the remotely located handheld device. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the tag comprises a song identifier. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the tag provides access for the remotely located handheld device or the user of the remotely located handheld device to the online music library to stream the song. 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the tag provides access for the remotely located handheld device or the user of the remotely located handheld device to the online music library to download the song. 5. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving user or account information from the remotely located handheld device, wherein the information identifies the online music library. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the identifying data is carried in the data representing audible portions of the audio signal with a steganographic encoding. 7. A method comprising: obtaining, at a handheld device, an electronic signal representing audible portions of music captured with a microphone;deriving or extracting, using a processor, identifying data from the electronic signal;creating a tag including the identifying data;transmitting the tag to a remotely located server, wherein the tag provides a person acquainted with but different than a user of the handheld device access to a digital file associated with the music. 8. The method of claim 7, wherein the audible portions of music were ripped from tangible media form prior to capture by the microphone. 9. The method of claim 7, wherein the audible portions of music comprise the identifying data, and wherein the identifying data is steganographically encoded therein. 10. A server comprising: a receiver; anda processor operatively coupled to the receiver and configured to: receive indentifying data from a remotely located handheld device, wherein the remotely located handheld device uses a processor to derive or extract the identifying data from data representing audible portions of an audio signal, and wherein the remotely located handheld device captures the audio signal with a microphone;use the identifying data to identify a song corresponding to the audio signal; andprovide a tag comprising information pertaining to the song to an online music library associated with the remotely located handheld device or a user of the remotely located handheld device, wherein the tag allows access to a digital file associated with the song to a person acquainted with but different than the user of the remotely located handheld device. 11. The server of claim 10, wherein the tag comprises a song identifier. 12. The server of claim 10, wherein the tag is configured to provide access for the remotely located handheld device or the user of the remotely located handheld device to the online music library to stream the song. 13. The server of claim 10, wherein the tag is configured to provide access for the remotely located handheld device or the user of the remotely located handheld device to the online music library to download the song. 14. The server of claim 10, wherein the processor is further configured to receive user or account information from the remotely located handheld device, wherein the information identifies the online music library. 15. The server of claim 10, wherein the identifying data is carried in the data representing audible portions of the audio signal with a steganographic encoding. 16. A non-transitory computer readable media having instructions stored thereon, the instructions comprising: instructions to receive indentifying data from a remotely located handheld device, wherein the remotely located handheld device uses a processor to derive or extract the identifying data from data representing audible portions of an audio signal, and wherein the remotely located handheld device captures the audio signal with a microphone;instructions to use the identifying data to identify a song corresponding to the audio signal; andinstructions to provide a tag including information pertaining to the song to an online music library associated with the remotely located handheld device or a user of the remotely located handheld device, wherein the tag allows access to a digital file associated with the song to a person acquainted with but different than the user of the remotely located handheld device. 17. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 16, wherein the tag comprises a song identifier. 18. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 16, wherein the tag provides access for the remotely located handheld device or the user of the remotely located handheld device to the online music library to stream the song. 19. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 16, wherein the tag provides access for the remotely located handheld device or the user of the remotely located handheld device to the online music library to download the song. 20. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 16, further comprising instructions to receive user or account information from the remotely located handheld device, the information identifying the online music library. 21. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 16, wherein the identifying data is carried in the data representing audible portions of the audio signal with a steganographic encoding. 22. A handheld device comprising: a transmitter; anda processor operatively coupled to the transmitter and configured to: obtain an electronic signal representing audible portions of music captured with a microphone;derive or extract identifying data from the electronic signal;create a tag including the identifying data; andtransmit the tag to a remotely located server wherein the tag is configured to provide a person acquainted with but different than a user of the handheld device access to a digital file associated with the music. 23.
