Systems of checking thermal-induced circulation of a coolant in a fuel cell stack are disclosed. The system includes coolant inlet and outlet lines extending from a fuel cell stack. A pump and a radiator are confluently connected to the coolant inlet and coolant outlet lines. In one embodiment, a valve (either check type or automatic type) is provided in the coolant outlet line at the bottom of the fuel cell stack to prevent the flow of cold coolant from the coolant outlet line into the fuel cell stack upon start-up of the fuel cell stack. In another embodiment, a valve (either one-way flow control type or automatic type) is provided in the coolant inlet line at the top of the fuel cell stack. A method of checking thermal-induced circulation of a coolant in a fuel cell stack is also disclosed.

1. A circulation check system comprising: a fuel cell stack having a coolant inlet in a lower portion of the fuel cell stack and a coolant outlet in an upper portion of the fuel cell stack in fluid communication with a coolant outlet line;a pump for pumping the coolant from the fuel cell stack through the coolant outlet and into the coolant outlet line; anda valve comprising a flow control or automatic type provided in fluid communication with the coolant outlet, the valve comprising a valve housing having a valve seat in a bottom portion of the valve housing, a valve stem adjacent to the valve seat, a valve weight slidably mounted on the valve stem, and a coolant opening extending through the valve seat, wherein the valve weight rests against the valve seat and blocks the coolant opening to close the valve during shutdown of the pump, but, during operation of the pump, the valve weight is pushed upwardly on the valve stem, which opens the valve and establishes fluid communication between the coolant outlet, the coolant opening in the valve seat, and the coolant outlet line. 2. The system of claim 1 further comprising a radiator in fluid communication with the coolant outlet line, and, wherein, during start-up of the fuel cell stack, the pump operates to open the valve and circulate the coolant through the fuel cell stack where heat is absorbed by the coolant, into the coolant outlet line, and further into the radiator so that thermal energy absorbed by the coolant may be dissipated. 3. A coolant circulation check system comprising: a fuel cell stack having a coolant inlet and a coolant outlet in fluid communication with a coolant outlet line;a pump for pumping a coolant from the fuel cell stack through the coolant outlet and into the coolant outlet line; anda valve comprising a one-way flow control type or automatic type provided in fluid communication with the coolant outlet, wherein the valve comprises a valve housing, a valve seat having a coolant opening provided in the valve housing, a valve stem provided in the valve housing adjacent to the valve seat, and a valve weight slidably mounted on the valve stem for engaging the valve seat to block the coolant opening and close the valve during shutdown of the pump and start-up of the fuel cell stack, the valve weight being such that warm coolant rising in the stack does not push upwardly against the valve weight with a force sufficient to raise the valve weight from the valve seat and unblock the coolant opening during shutdown of the pump and start-up of the fuel cell stack. 4. The system of claim 3 further comprising a radiator provided in fluid communication with the coolant outlet line, wherein, after the fuel cell stack reaches a design operating temperature, the pump operates to circulate the coolant through the fuel cell stack so that upward pressure of the coolant rising through the coolant opening of the valve seat pushes the valve weight upwardly on the valve stem to open the valve so that the coolant can flow from the coolant outlet, through the valve into the coolant outlet line and into the radiator. 5. A coolant circulation check system comprising: a fuel cell stack having a coolant inlet at a lower portion of the fuel cell stack and a coolant outlet in fluid communication with a coolant outlet line at an upper portion of the fuel cell stack; anda flow control or automatic type valve in fluid communication with the coolant outlet at the upper portion of the fuel cell stack, the valve comprising a valve seat and a valve weight for engaging the valve seat to block the coolant outlet and close the valve; anda pump for pumping a coolant from the fuel cell stack through the coolant outlet and into the coolant outlet line, wherein a gravitational force on the valve weight is sufficient to block the coolant outlet during shutdown of the pump and prevent thermally induced circulation of the coolant from the coolant outlet during start-up of the fuel cell stack, and an upward force of the pumped coolant on the valve weight during operation of the pump is sufficient to raise the valve weight from the valve seat to unblock the coolant outlet and facilitate flow of the coolant from the fuel cell stack. 6. A coolant circulation check system comprising: a fuel cell stack having a coolant inlet and a coolant outleta pump for pumping a coolant from the fuel cell stack through the coolant outlet; anda pressure-activated valve in fluid communication with the coolant outlet, the valve comprising a valve housing having a valve seat, a valve stem adjacent to the valve seat, a valve weight slidably mounted on the valve stem, and a coolant opening extending through the valve seat, wherein the valve weight rests against the valve seat and blocks the coolant opening to close the valve during shutdown of the pump, but, during operation of the pump, the valve weight slides upwardly on the valve stem and pushes the valve stem away from the valve seat to open the valve and establish fluid communication between the coolant outlet of the fuel cell stack and the coolant opening of the valve seat.
