An apparatus and method for a game having a paytable selection feature which may be implemented with a primary or base game, a secondary or bonus game, or both. In one embodiment, the gaming device employs an initial paytable and enables a player pay a fee to purchase a different paytable for a plurality of plays of the game. If the player chooses to purchase a different paytable, the gaming device determines a game outcome for a plurality of plays of the game and provides any awards based on the different paytable. If the player does not choose to select a different paytable, the gaming device determines a game outcome for each of those plays and provides any awards based on the initial paytable. In one embodiment, the player has the opportunity to see the different paytable prior to paying the fee to purchase it.

The method of operating a gaming system of claim 1, wherein an average expected award of the second different paytable is greater than an average expected award of the first paytable. 3. The method of operating a gaming system of claim 1, which includes causing the at least one processor to operate with the at least one display device to display the first paytable prior to the receiving the fee. 4. The method of operating a gaming system of claim 3, which includes causing the at least one processor to operate with the at least one display device to display the second different paytable prior to the receiving the fee. 5. The method of operating a gaming system of claim 1, wherein said quantity of plays of the game includes one of: (a) a predetermined number of plays of the game; and (b) a number of plays of the game in a designated amount of time. 6. The method of operating a gaming system of claim 1, wherein the credits are not redeemable for cash by the player. 7. The method of operating a gaming system of claim 1, which is provided through a data network. 8. The method of operating a gaming system of claim 7, wherein the data network is an internet. 9. The method of operating a gaming system of claim 7, wherein said plurality of instructions, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the alternative paytable to be at least in part selected by the player. 10. A method of operating a gaming system, said method comprising: (a) causing at least one processor to operate with at least one input device and at least one display device to enable a player to pay a fee to replace a first paytable with a second different paytable for a quantity of plays of a game, said quantity including at least two plays of said game, said fee being in addition to credits placed on each said play of the game, the second different paytable providing at least one advantage over the first paytable, said at least one advantage selected from a group consisting of: (i) a higher award for a same outcome,(ii) a higher multiplier,(iii) a different number of winning symbol combinations,(iv) a different type of winning symbol combination,(v) a different quantity of symbols,(vi) different types of symbols,(vii) a different proportion symbols, and(viii) a different ordering of symbols;(b) causing the at least one processor to operate with the at least one input device and the at least one display device, if the player does not pay the fee, for each of said plays of the game in said quantity, to: (i) determine a game outcome for said play of the game,(ii) display the determined game outcome for said play of the game, and(iii) display any award associated with said determined game outcome based on the first paytable; and(c) causing the at least one processor to operate with the at least one input device and the at least one display device, if the player pays the fee, for each of said plays of the game in said quantity, to: (i) determine a game outcome for said play of the game,(ii) display the determined game outcome for said play of the game, and(iii) display any award associated with said determined game outcome based on the second different paytable. 11. The method of operating a gaming system of claim 10, wherein an average expected award of the second different paytable is greater than an average expected award of the first paytable. 12. The method of operating a gaming system of claim 11, which includes causing the at least one processor to operate with the at least one display device to display the first paytable prior to receiving the fee. 13. The method of operating a gaming system of claim 12, which includes causing the at least one processor to operate with the at least one display device to display the second different paytable prior to receiving the fee. 14. The method of operating a gaming system of claim 11, wherein said quantity of plays of the game includes one of: (a) a predetermined number of plays of the game; and (b) a number of plays of the game in a designated amount of time. 15.
