A dental device has a U-shaped carrier with at least one channel for embracing an arch of teeth. The carrier has recessed insets in the channel. Discrete inserts carrying a beneficial agent can fit into the insets and release the agent gradually. The device may be used in a therapeutic application and as an athletic mouthguard. Temporary blanks may be initially fitted in the insets while a portion of the mouthguard is softened before an arch of teeth is pressed into the channel to make a custom impression. The inserts possess different physical properties than the carrier and may be positioned and shaped to mechanically buffer teeth of the arch from mechanical shocks as well as release beneficial agents. The inserts may be replaced or refreshed to maintain the beneficial agent. A dental device having a core carrying a beneficial agent inside a liquid-permeable shell functions as an infant's teething device.

1. A method of making a dental device which conforms to an arch of teeth by employing a U-shaped polymer carrier having a channel for embracing said arch of teeth, said carrier having at least one recessed inset receiving a removable insert, said method comprising, softening at least a portion of said carrier along said channel, pressing said arch of teeth into said channel to make an impression of said arch of teeth when said insert is received within said inset, andremoving said insert from said inset after the softening and pressing steps and prior to use of said dental device. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein said channel is bound by a lingual/palatal surface and a buccal/labial surface. 3. The method of claim 2, further including a polymer layer attached to said lingual/palatal surface within a portion of said channel. 4. The method of claim 3, wherein said impression is formed within said polymer layer. 5. The method of claim 2, wherein said inset is located within said buccal/labial surface. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein said forming an impression comprises biting into said channel with said arch of teeth. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein softening at least a portion of said carrier comprises heating said carrier. 8. A method of making a dental device for protecting an arch of teeth, said dental device comprising a U-shaped polymer carrier having a channel for embracing said arch of teeth and at least one inset, said dental device including at least one removable insert, said method comprising, heating said carrier to soften at least a portion of said carrier at least along said channel when said insert is received within said inset, biting said arch of teeth into said channel while said removable insert is received within said inset to make an impression of said arch of teeth, andremoving said insert from said inset after the heating and biting steps and prior to use of said dental device. 9. The method of claim 8, wherein said channel is bound by a lingual/palatal surface and a buccal/labial surface. 10. The method of claim 9, further including a polymer layer attached to said lingual/palatal surface within a portion of said channel. 11. The method of claim 10, wherein said impression is formed within said polymer layer. 12. The method of claim 11, wherein the softening temperature of said polymer layer is less than the softening temperature of said polymer carrier. 13. The method of claim 9, wherein said inset is located within said buccal/labial surface. 14. A method of making a dental device adapted for mechanically buffering an arch of teeth, said device comprising a U-shaped polymer carrier having a channel adapted for embracing said arch of teeth and at least one inset, said method comprising, heating said carrier with an insert removeably received within said inset to soften said carrier at least along a portion of said channel, forming an impression of said arch of teeth in said channel while said insert remains within said inset, andremoving said insert after the heating and forming steps and prior to use of said dental device for mechanically buffering said arch of teeth. 15. The method of claim 14, wherein said channel is bound by a lingual/palatal surface and a buccal/labial surface. 16. The method of claim 15, further including a polymer layer attached to said lingual/palatal surface within a portion of said channel. 17. The method of claim 16, wherein said impression is formed within said polymer layer. 18. The method of claim 16, wherein the softening temperature of said polymer layer is less than the softening temperature of said polymer carrier. 19. The method of claim 15, wherein said inset is located within said buccal/labial surface. 20. A dental device for mechanically buffering an arch of teeth, said device comprising, a U-shaped polymer carrier having a channel adapted for embracing said arch of teeth, said channel bound by a lingual/palatal wall, a buccal/labial wall, and an occlusal/incisal wall therebetween, said buccal/labial wall having an upstanding portion extending from said occlusal/incisal wall and a free edge spaced apart from said occlusal/incisal wall,a polymer layer attached to a portion of said lingual/palatal wall, wherein said polymer layer has a softening temperature lower than the softening temperature of said polymer carrier,at least one inset within said buccal/labial wall, said inset having an opening along said upstanding portion of said buccal/labial wall, andat least one removable insert adapted to be received within said inset through said opening. 21. The device of claim 20, wherein said polymer layer includes an impression of said arch of teeth. 22. The device of claim 20, further including a plurality of said insets within said buccal/labial surface. 23. The device of claim 20, further including an insert removeably received with said inset prior to use of said dental device. 24. The device of claim 20, wherein said inset opposes said polymer layer. 25. The device of claim 20, wherein said upstanding portion of said buccal/labial wall includes a facial surface and a lingual surface, said opening of said inset being in said lingual surface. 26. A method of making a dental device for protecting an arch of teeth, said dental device comprising a U-shaped polymer carrier having a channel for embracing said arch of teeth and a plurality of insets, said dental device including a plurality of removable inserts, said method comprising, heating said carrier to soften at least a portion of said carrier at least along said channel when at least one of said inserts is received within at least one of said insets, biting said arch of teeth into said channel while said at least one insert is received within said at least one inset to make an impression of said arch of teeth, andremoving said at least one insert from said at least one inset prior to use of said dental device. 27. A method of making a dental device adapted for mechanically buffering an arch of teeth, said device comprising a U-shaped polymer carrier having a channel adapted for embracing said arch of teeth and a plurality of insets, said method comprising, heating said carrier with a plurality of inserts removeably received within said insets to soften said carrier at least along a portion of said channel, forming an impression of said arch of teeth in said channel while said inserts remain within said insets, andremoving said inserts prior to use of said dental device for mechanically buffering said arch of teeth. 28.
