Hydrogen-producing fuel processing systems, hydrogen purification membranes, hydrogen purification devices, fuel processing and fuel cell systems that include hydrogen purification devices, and methods for operating the same. In some embodiments, operation of the fuel processing system is initiated by heating at least the reforming region of the fuel processing system to at least a selected hydrogen-producing operating temperature. In some embodiments, an electric heater is utilized to perform this initial heating. In some embodiments, use of the electric heater is discontinued after startup, and a burner or other combustion-based heating assembly combusts a fuel to heat at least the hydrogen producing region, such as due to the reforming region utilizing an endothermic catalytic reaction to produce hydrogen gas.

A hydrogen purifier, comprising: an enclosure configured to receive an impure hydrogen stream; wherein the impure hydrogen stream contains hydrogen gas as a majority component and also contains other gases; and further wherein the enclosure defines an internal compartment;a tubular hydrogen-selective membrane within the enclosure, wherein the tubular hydrogen-selective membrane contains a palladium alloy and is configured to separate the impure hydrogen stream into a product hydrogen stream and a byproduct stream, wherein the product hydrogen stream contains hydrogen gas that permeates through the tubular hydrogen-selective membrane, wherein the byproduct stream contains a portion of the impure hydrogen stream that does not permeate through the tubular hydrogen-selective membrane; wherein the product hydrogen stream has a greater concentration of hydrogen gas than the impure hydrogen stream, and further wherein the byproduct stream contains hydrogen gas having a lower concentration than the impure hydrogen stream and a greater concentration of the other gases than the impure hydrogen stream;at least one tubular support configured to support the tubular hydrogen-selective membrane against deformation when exposed to a pressure differential between a pressure of the impure hydrogen stream and a pressure of the product stream; anda polishing region containing at least one carbon monoxide removal catalyst; wherein the polishing region is configured to receive the product hydrogen stream and, when the product hydrogen stream contains carbon monoxide, to catalytically reduce the concentration of carbon monoxide therein by at least one of a water gas shift reaction and a methanation reaction. 2. The hydrogen purifier of claim 1, wherein the at least one tubular support includes a spring. 3. The hydrogen purifier of claim 1, wherein the at least one tubular support includes a tubular metal support through which hydrogen gas that permeates through the membrane may flow. 4. The hydrogen purifier of claim 1, wherein the at least one tubular support includes a porous ceramic support. 5. The hydrogen purifier of claim 1, wherein the tubular hydrogen-selective membrane includes a cap secured thereto by one or more of ultrasonic welding, brazing, and diffusion bonding. 6. The hydrogen purifier of claim 5, wherein the tubular hydrogen-selective membrane includes a pair of caps secured thereto. 7. The hydrogen purifier of claim 1, wherein the tubular hydrogen-selective membrane includes at least one etched surface. 8. The hydrogen purifier of claim 1, wherein the palladium alloy comprises palladium, copper, carbon, with the palladium alloy containing no more than 50 ppm carbon. 9. The hydrogen purifier of claim 1, wherein the enclosure includes a plurality of the tubular hydrogen-selective membranes. 10. The hydrogen purifier of claim 1, wherein the byproduct stream produced by the purifier contains at least 20% of the hydrogen gas from the impure hydrogen stream. 11. The hydrogen purifier of claim 1, wherein the polishing region is located within the enclosure. 12. The hydrogen purifier of claim 1, wherein the polishing region is located external the enclosure. 13. The hydrogen purifier of claim 1, further comprising an insulated housing containing the enclosure and the polishing region. 14. The hydrogen purifier of claim 13, further comprising means for heating the insulated housing to a temperature of at least a 250° C. 15. The hydrogen purifier of claim 14, wherein the means for heating includes at least one electric resistance heater. 16. The hydrogen purifier of claim 14, wherein the means for heating includes a combustion region. 17. The hydrogen purifier of claim 16, wherein the combustion region is configured to receive and combust at least a portion of the byproduct stream to produce a heated combustion stream for heating the tubular hydrogen-selective membrane and the polishing region. 18. The hydrogen purifier of claim 17, further comprising an air heater configured to receive and preheat an air flow that is mixed with the byproduct stream for combustion of the byproduct stream to produce the heated combustion stream. 19. The hydrogen purifier of claim 1, wherein the impure hydrogen stream comprises reformate from a hydrogen-producing fuel processor. 20. The hydrogen purifier of claim 1, in combination with a fuel cell stack configured to receive at least a portion of the product hydrogen stream.
