1. A method of operating a fuel-combusting engine having an intake, an exhaust, and a hydrocarbon-retaining system, comprising: selectively routing engine exhaust gases to the hydrocarbon-retaining system to store exhaust hydrocarbons;selectively purging stored hydrocarbons from the hydrocarbon-retaining system; andvarying an ending of the selective routing to store exhaust hydrocarbons responsive to fuel alcohol content by ending routing at a higher exhaust emission device temperature as the fuel alcohol content is increased. 2. The method of claim 1 further comprising purging stored hydrocarbons to an engine intake. 3. The method of claim 2, where the selective routing is carried out during an engine start and warm-up. 4. The method of claim 3, where the fuel alcohol content includes an alcohol amount learned during previous engine operation. 5. The method of claim 2 wherein the hydrocarbon-retaining system communicates with a fuel tank to further retain at least some fuel vapors from the fuel tank. 6. The method of claim 2 further comprising adjusting fuel injection based on the selective purging to learn an amount of stored hydrocarbons in the hydrocarbon-retaining system while not purging fuel tank vapors. 7. The method of claim 2, where said varying includes ending routing at a lower temperature as the fuel alcohol content is decreased. 8. The method of claim 1 further comprising varying an initiating of the selective purging of stored hydrocarbons responsive to the fuel alcohol content, and purging stored hydrocarbons to an intake of the engine. 9. The method of claim 8, where said varying includes initiating selective purging at a higher temperature as the fuel alcohol content is increased. 10. The method of claim 1, where said selective routing is carried out during engine starting, the method further comprising combusting a rich exhaust air-fuel ratio during at least a portion of the routing, even when temperature of an emission control device is below a light-off temperature, and further operating with exhaust air-fuel ratio about stoichiometry after the ending. 11. The method of claim 10, where the hydrocarbon-retaining system includes a plurality of hydrocarbon adsorbing devices, the method comprising purging the plurality of hydrocarbon adsorbing devices. 12. The method of claim 3 further comprising transferring exhaust gas heat from the exhaust to fresh air drawn in to purge the hydrocarbon-retaining system. 13. The method of claim 1, where the selective routing does not occur during the selective purging. 14. The method of claim 1 where the selective purging occurs after the selective routing, where the selective routing occurs without the selective purging. 15. The method of claim 3 further comprising determining degradation of the hydrocarbon-retaining system responsive to pressure in the hydrocarbon-retaining system. 16. A system for a vehicle including an engine having an intake and an exhaust, the system comprising: a fuel system of the vehicle;a hydrocarbon-retaining system selectively coupled to the engine intake, engine exhaust, and fuel system; anda controller for selectively routing exhaust gases of the engine to the hydrocarbon-retaining system to store exhaust hydrocarbons; selectively routing fuel vapors from the fuel system to the hydrocarbon-retaining system, selectively purging stored hydrocarbons from the hydrocarbon-retaining system to the engine intake; and delaying an ending of the routing to store exhaust hydrocarbons responsive to at least an increased alcohol content of fuel combusted in the engine. 17. A system for a vehicle including an engine having an intake and an exhaust, the system comprising: a fuel system of the vehicle;a hydrocarbon-retaining system selectively coupled to the engine intake, engine exhaust, and fuel system, the hydrocarbon-retaining system having a vent positioned adjacent to at least a portion of the exhaust of the engine; anda controller for selectively routing exhaust gases of the engine to the hydrocarbon-retaining system to store exhaust hydrocarbons; selectively routing fuel vapors from the fuel system to the hydrocarbon-retaining system, selectively purging stored hydrocarbons from the hydrocarbon-retaining system to the engine intake by inducting fresh air into the vent; and delaying an ending of the routing to store exhaust hydrocarbons responsive to at least an increased alcohol content of fuel combusted in the engine. 18. A system for a vehicle including an engine having an intake and an exhaust, the system comprising: a fuel system of the vehicle including a fuel tank;a hydrocarbon-retaining system selectively coupled to the engine intake, engine exhaust, and fuel system, the hydrocarbon-retaining system having a hydrocarbon retaining device configured to store hydrocarbons from engine exhaust and from the fuel tank; anda controller for selectively routing exhaust gases of the engine to the hydrocarbon retaining device to store exhaust hydrocarbons; selectively routing fuel vapors from the fuel tank to the hydrocarbon retaining device, selectively purging stored hydrocarbons from the hydrocarbon retaining device to the engine intake; and delaying an ending of the routing to store exhaust hydrocarbons or an initiating of the purging responsive to at least an increased alcohol content of fuel combusted in the engine.
