A nasal cannula assembly is disclosed having a face mount part, in use resting against a user's face, which includes at least one nasal prong capable of being fitted into a person's nares. The cannula assembly also includes a manifold part, in fluid communication with the face mount part, having a single horizontal side gases entry. In particular, this cannula assembly is for supplying heated, humidified gases to a patient suffering from COPD. A tie or lanyard is disclosed for use with a breathing assistance apparatus such as a nasal cannula, face or nasal mask or tracheostomy connector. The tie or lanyard transfers the weight of the conduits supplying gases to the breathing assistance apparatus from the breathing assistance apparatus and distributes it onto the neck of the patient.

1. A single flow entry nasal cannula assembly adapted for an intake of flow from either a left side or a right side such that the nasal cannula assembly can be configured for left hand orientation or right hand orientation, the cannula assembly comprising a face mount portion and a gas flow manifold; the face mount portion comprising a generally tubular-shaped member defining an open tubular recess, at least one nasal prong extending away from the generally tubular-shaped member, the at least one nasal prong comprising a passage that opens into the open tubular recess defined by the generally tubular-shaped member;the gases flow manifold insertable into the open tubular recess defined by the generally tubular shaped member, the gases flow manifold comprising a first end and a second end, the first end of the gases flow manifold closing at least one end of the open tubular recess defined by the generally tubular-shaped member when the gases flow manifold is inserted into the open tubular recess defined by the generally tubular shaped member, the second end of the gases flow manifold being connectable to tubing; andthe gases flow manifold comprising a wall that connects the first end of the gases flow manifold to the second end of the gases flow manifold, and an opening being defined between the first end and the second end whereby flow from the second end of the gases flow manifold can pass into the passage of the at least one nasal prong through the opening of the gases flow manifold. 2. The cannula assembly of claim 1, wherein the wall of the gases flow manifold is received within the generally tubular-shaped member of the face mount portion. 3. The cannula assembly of claim 1, wherein the passage of the at least one nasal prong and the open tubular recess defined by the generally tubular-shaped member intersect at an aperture, the aperture being positioned generally opposite of the wall of the gases flow manifold when the gases flow manifold is positioned within the generally tubular-shaped member of the face mount portion. 4. The cannula assembly of claim 1, wherein face mount portion comprises a pair of nasal prongs and the pair of nasal prongs define a corresponding pair of passages that open into the open tubular recess defined by the generally tubular-shaped member. 5. The cannula assembly of claim 4, wherein the opening of the gases flow manifold meets the pair of passages defined by the pair of nasal prongs. 6. The cannula assembly of claim 1, wherein the face mount portion and the gases flow manifold comprise interlocking features that secure the gases flow manifold in position with the face mount portion. 7. The cannula assembly of claim 6, wherein the interlocking features comprise at least one lip area formed on the gases flow manifold. 8. The cannula assembly of claim 7, wherein the interlocking features further comprises an edge formed on the generally tubular-shaped member and the edge abuts the at least one lip area formed on the gases flow manifold. 9. The cannula assembly of claim 1, wherein the gases flow manifold is connected to tubing. 10. The cannula assembly of claim 1, wherein the at least one nasal prong is generally tubular in shape. 11. The cannula assembly of claim 1, wherein the passage defined by the at least one nasal prong is greater than 3 mm in diameter. 12. The cannula assembly of claim 1, wherein the face mount portion and the at least one nasal prong are integrally formed. 13. The cannula assembly of claim 1, wherein the face mount portion and the at least one nasal prong are integrally formed of a soft plastics material. 14. The cannula assembly of claim 13, wherein the soft plastics material comprises silicone. 15. The cannula assembly of claim 1, wherein the face mount portion comprises a first strap attachment construction and a second strap attachment construction. 16. The cannula assembly of claim 15, wherein the first strap attachment construction and the second strap attachment construction are integrally formed with the face mount portion. 17. A single flow entry nasal cannula comprising: a face mount part, the face mount part comprising a strap, a housing connected to the strap, a first prong and a second prong extending away from the housing, the housing defining a recess, the first prong defining a first passage, the second prong defining a second passage, the first passage and the second passage opening into the recess, a first headgear connection and a second headgear connection being positioned such that the first prong and the second prong are interposed between the first headgear connection and the second headgear connection;a gases flow manifold removably positioned within the recess defined by the housing, the gases flow manifold having a closed end and an open end, the open end being adapted to connect to a tube, the gases flow manifold adapted to be inserted into the housing from a first direction and a second direction whereby the closed end of the gases flow manifold can close off a first end of the recess defined by the housing or a second end of the recess defined by the housing; andthe gases flow manifold comprising a wall that connects the closed end to the open end and an outlet opening in the gases flow manifold being defined between the closed end and the open end in the vicinity of the wall, the outlet opening generally being in axial alignment with the first passage defined by the first prong and the second passage defined by the second prong. 18. The cannula assembly of claim 1, wherein the face mount portion comprises at least one strap, the at least one strap being connected to the generally tubular-shaped member. 19. The cannula assembly of claim 18, wherein the at least one strap is integrally formed with the generally tubular-shaped member. 20. The cannula assembly of claim 1, wherein the open tubular recess within the generally tubular-shaped member comprises a generally cylindrical portion.
