A humidifier for adding humidity to an air stream of an HVAC system includes a housing configured to be mounted to a surface of an HVAC duct. The housing may be configured to hold a humidifier pad in an operating position. The housing may direct air through the humidifier pad from a first major surface to a second major surface of the pad. In the operating position, the first and second major surfaces of the humidifier pad may be substantially non-parallel with the surface of the HVAC duct when the housing is mounted to the surface of the HVAC duct. In some cases, this may provide a more compact design. In some cases, a centrifugal fan, rather than an axial fan, may be used to draw air into the humidifier from the HVAC duct. The humidifier of claim 1, wherein the fan is a centrifugal fan. 4. The humidifier of claim 1, wherein the surface of the HVAC duct includes an aperture, and the housing defines an aperture that is in fluid communication with the aperture of the HVAC duct when the housing is mounted to the surface of the HVAC duct, and wherein the aperture defined by the housing defines an area that is substantially less than an area of the first major surface of the humidifier pad. 5. The humidifier of claim 4, wherein the ratio of the area of the aperture defined by the housing is less than about 80% of the area of the first major surface of the humidifier pad. 6. The humidifier of claim 4, wherein the ratio of the area of the aperture defined by the housing is less than about 60% of the area of the first major surface of the humidifier pad. 7. The humidifier of claim 4, wherein the ratio of the area of the aperture defined by the housing is less than about 40% of the area of the first major surface of the humidifier pad. 8. The humidifier of claim 1, wherein the fan is located within the housing. 9. A humidifier for adding humidity to an air stream of an HVAC system, the humidifier comprising: a housing configured to be mounted to a surface of an HVAC duct, the housing further configured to hold a humidifier pad in an operating position;the humidifier pad having a first major surface and an opposing second major surface, wherein, when the humidifier pad is held by the housing in the operating position, the housing directs air through the humidifier pad from the first major surface to the second major surface, the first and second major surfaces of the humidifier pad being substantially non-parallel with the surface of the HVAC duct when the housing is mounted to the surface of the HVAC duct; anda shroud situated adjacent to the humidifier pad when the humidifier pad is in the operation position, the shroud directing air flow substantially across the first major surface of the humidifier pad. 10. A humidifier for adding humidity to an air stream of an HVAC system, the humidifier comprising: a housing configured to be mounted to a surface of an HVAC duct, the housing further configured to hold a humidifier pad in an operating position;the humidifier pad having a first major surface and an opposing second major surface, wherein, when the humidifier pad is held by the housing in the operating position, the housing directs air through the humidifier pad from the first major surface to the second major surface, the first and second major surfaces of the humidifier pad being substantially non-parallel with the surface of the HVAC duct when the housing is mounted to the surface of the HVAC duct; andwherein the housing includes at least one access port for maintenance of the humidifier pad, the humidifier pad being slidably accessible through the access port in a direction that is parallel or substantially parallel to the first major surface of the humidifier pad. 13. A humidifier for adding humidity to an air stream of an HVAC system, the humidifier comprising: an air intake configured to interface with an opening of an HVAC duct, the opening in the HVAC duct situated generally along a first plane;a humidifier pad; anda centrifugal fan configured to draw air into the humidifier from the HVAC duct through the air intake opening and through the humidifier pad, the centrifugal fan having a rotation axis, wherein the first plane and the rotation axis are substantially parallel. 14. The humidifier of claim 13, further comprising a humidifier pad having a major surface defining a second plane that is substantially parallel to the first plane. 15. The humidifier of claim 13, wherein the humidifier pad has a major surface defining a second plane that is substantially perpendicular to the first plane, and wherein the second plane and the rotation axis of the centrifugal fan are substantially perpendicular. 16. A humidifier for adding humidity to an air stream of an HVAC system, the humidifier comprising: an air intake configured to interface with an opening of an HVAC duct, the opening in the HVAC duct situated generally along a first plane;a humidifier pad having a major surface defining a second plane that is substantially non-parallel to the first plane; anda centrifugal fan configured to draw air into the humidifier from the HVAC duct through the air intake opening, the centrifugal fan having a rotation axis. 17. The humidifier of claim 16, wherein the humidifier pad has a major surface defining a second plane that is substantially perpendicular to the first plane. 18. A method for humidifying air in an air stream of an HVAC system, comprising: operating a fan to draw air from an opening in an HVAC duct, the opening defining a first plane;passing the air through a humidifier pad having a major surface defining a second plane, wherein the second plane is substantially non-parallel with the first plane; andreturning the air to the HVAC duct.
