A cannula (10) receives surgical instruments (120) for performing a surgical procedure on a body (130). The cannula (10) comprises a tube structure (12) defining a passage (16) through which the surgical instruments (120) are inserted into the body (130). The tube structure (12) has a proximal end (20) and a distal end (62). The tube structure (12) includes an expandable portion (40) for enabling an increase in the cross-sectional area of the passage (16) at the distal end (62). The expandable portion (40) of the tube structure (12), when expanded, has a conical configuration.

1. A method of providing access to a spinal location, comprising: providing a device, the device including an elongate body having a proximal end and a distal end and defining a length between the proximal and distal ends, the elongate body having an outer surface, an inner surface, an unexpanded configuration, an expanded configuration, and providing an access path to the spinal location;positioning the elongate body, in the unexpanded configuration, such that the proximal end is positioned outside the patient and the distal end is positioned inside the patient adjacent the spinal location;expanding the elongate body from a contracted configuration to an expanded configuration by applying a radially outward directed force on the inner surface of the elongate body with an element separate from the device, wherein expanding the elongate body results in the cross-sectional area of the access path being expanded at a first location to be greater than the cross-sectional area of the access path at a second location in the expanded configuration, wherein the first location is distal to the second location;removing the element from the device; anddelivering an instrument through the elongate body along the access path to the spinal location;wherein said elongate body is expanded by being guided along a curvilinear path. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the elongate body is positioned through an incision in a patient's back. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the elongate body comprises metallic sheet material. 4. The method of claim 3, wherein the elongate body is made of stainless steel. 5. The method of claim 1, further comprising performing a surgical procedure through the elongate body at the spinal location. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the elongate body has a substantially tubular configuration when the elongate body is contracted. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the elongate body comprises a first member and a second member moveable relative to each other. 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the elongate body is expanded by being guided along an arcuate slot. 9. The method of claim 8, wherein the elongate body is expanded by moving a pin along the arcuate slot. 10. A method of providing access to a surgical location, comprising: providing a device, the device including an elongate body having a proximal end and a distal end and defining a length between the proximal and distal ends, the elongate body having an outer surface and an inner surface and providing an access path to the surgical location, the elongate body moveable between an unexpanded configuration and an expanded configuration;positioning the elongate body in the unexpanded configuration such that the proximal end is positioned outside the patient and the distal end is positioned inside the patient adjacent the surgical location;expanding the elongate body, by applying a radially outward directed force on the inner surface of the elongate body with an element separate from the device, and by guiding at least a portion of the elongate body along a curvilinear path, thereby expanding a transverse dimension of the access path at a first location to be greater than a transverse dimension of the access path at a second location, wherein the first location is distal to the second location;removing the element from the device; andinserting a surgical instrument through the elongate body along the access path to the surgical location and performing a surgical procedure through the elongate body at the surgical location. 11. The method of claim 10, wherein the elongate body is positioned through an incision in a patient's skin. 12. The method of claim 11, wherein the elongate body is positioned to provide access to a spinal location. 13. The method of claim 10, wherein the elongate body comprises metallic sheet material. 14. The method of claim 13, wherein the elongate body is made of stainless steel. 15. The method of claim 10, wherein the elongate body has a substantially tubular configuration prior to expanding the elongate body. 16. The method of claim 10, wherein the elongate body comprises a first member moveable relative to a second member, at least one of the first and second members moving along the curvilinear path as the elongate body is expanded. 17. The method of claim 10, wherein the elongate body is expanded by being guided along an arcuate slot. 18. The method of claim 17, wherein the elongate body is expanded by moving a pin along the arcuate slot.
