The humidification canister includes a first gas flow path to receive and humidify the first flow of gas. A delivery tube assembly includes a first lumen configured for fluid communication with the first gas flow path to receive the humidified first flow of gas and a second lumen to receive the second flow of gas. A method of heating and humidifying the first flow of gas and insulating the first flow of gas with the second flow of gas is also described.

The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the base unit comprises: a gas flow source configured to deliver an initial flow of gas; anda flow divider in fluid communication with the gas flow source configured to divide the initial flow of the gas into the first flow of gas and the second flow of gas. 3. The apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the gas flow source is configurable to deliver the first flow of gas to the patient at a delivery flow rate. 4. The apparatus according to claim 3, wherein an actual flow rate of the first flow of gas is greater than the delivery flow rate during patient inhalation. 5. The apparatus according to claim 3, wherein an actual flow rate of the second flow of gas decreases during patient inhalation. 6. The apparatus according to claim 3, wherein an actual flow rate of the first flow of gas is less than the delivery flow rate during patient exhalation. 7. The apparatus according to claim 3, wherein an actual flow rate of the second flow of gas increases during patient exhalation. 8. The apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the flow divider comprises: a first compartment having a first compartment discharge port; anda second compartment having a second compartment discharge port extending coaxially with the first compartment discharge port. 9. The apparatus according to claim 8, wherein the second compartment comprises a heater adapted to heat the second flow of the gas. 10. The apparatus according to claim 8, wherein the first compartment discharge port is in fluid communication with the first gas flow path and the second compartment discharge port is in fluid communication with the second gas flow path. 11. The apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the gas flow source comprises a single source. 12. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the humidification canister comprises a fluid supply chamber configured to hold a fluid in fluid communication with the first gas flow path. 13. The apparatus according to claim 12, wherein the humidification canister further comprises a flat sheet membrane between the fluid supply chamber and the first gas flow path. 14. The apparatus according to claim 13, wherein the flat sheet membrane restricts passage of fluid from the fluid supply chamber into the first gas flow path. 15. The apparatus according to claim 12, wherein the base unit comprises a fluid heater configured to heat the fluid in the humidification canister. 16. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the humidification canister further comprises a second gas flow path configured to receive the second flow of gas, insulate at least a portion of the first gas flow path, and provide the second flow of gas to the second lumen. 17. The apparatus according to claim 16, wherein the humidification canister further comprises a pressurization path between the second gas flow path and the fluid supply chamber to pressurize the fluid supply chamber with the second flow of gas. 18. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the second lumen of the delivery tube assembly is adjacent the first lumen of the delivery tube assembly. 19. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the first lumen of the delivery tube assembly comprises an inner lumen and the second lumen of the delivery tube assembly comprises an outer lumen extending generally coaxially with the inner lumen. 20. A heated and humidified breathing gas apparatus comprising: a source of gas, the source of gas including a gas heater configured to heat only a second portion of the gas generated by the source of gas;a humidification chamber operatively and releasably coupled to the source of gas, the humidification chamber configured to heat and humidify a first portion of the gas generated by the source of gas;an insulation chamber operatively and releasably coupled to the source of gas, the insulation chamber configured to receive the second portion of the gas and to completely surround the first portion of the gas upstream and downstream of the humidification chamber; anda multilumen delivery tube assembly having a first lumen in fluid communication with the humidification chamber and a second lumen adjacent the first lumen in fluid communication with the insulation chamber. 21. The heated and humidified breathing gas apparatus according to claim 20, further comprising an insulation gas flow path through the insulation chamber providing fluid communication between the gas source and the delivery tube assembly. 22. The heated and humidified breathing gas apparatus according to claim 21, further comprising a pressurization path between the insulation gas flow path and the fluid supply. 23. The heated and humidified breathing gas apparatus according to claim 20, further comprising a fluid supply operatively coupled to the humidification chamber to transmit water vapor to the humidification chamber. 24. A method for providing breathing gas to a patient comprising: a) generating a first flow of gas and a second flow of gas with a source of gas;b) heating only the second flow of gas;c) passing the first flow of gas along a first gas flow path and the second flow of gas along a second gas flow path;d) humidifying the first flow of gas in the first gas flow path in a humidification chamber;e) insulating the first flow of gas passing along the first gas flow path by completely surrounding the first gas flow path with the second flow of gas passing along the second gas flow path upstream and downstream of the humidification chamber; andf) delivering the humidified first flow of gas with a delivery tube assembly to the patient for inhalation by the patient. 25. The method according to claim 24, wherein step d) comprises humidifying the first flow of gas with a fluid in fluid communication with the first gas flow path. 26. The method according to claim 25, wherein step d) further comprises the step of heating the fluid. 27. The method according to claim 25, further comprising the step of pressurizing a fluid supply chamber with the second flow of gas. 28. The method according to claim 24, further comprising the step of setting a delivery flow rate of the first flow of gas to the patient. 29. The method according to claim 28, wherein an actual flow rate of the first flow of gas is greater than the delivery flow rate during patient inhalation. 30. The method according to claim 28, wherein an actual flow rate of the first flow of gas is less than the delivery flow rate during patient exhalation. 31. A method of delivering heated and humidified breathing gas to a patient, the method comprising the steps of: a) generating a gas flow with a source of gas;b) dividing the gas flow into a breathing gas flow and an insulating gas flow;c) heating the insulating gas flow;d) heating and humidifying the breathing gas flow in a humidification chamber;e) completely surrounding the breathing gas flow with the insulating gas flow upstream and downstream of the humidification chamber with an insulation chamber; andf) delivering the heated and humidified breathing gas flow to the patient with a delivery tube assembly. 32. The method according to claim 31, wherein step f) comprises delivering the heated and humidified gas flow through a delivery tube assembly. 33. The method according to claim 32, wherein step f) further comprises using the insulating gas flow to insulate the heated and humidified breathing gas flow. 34. The method according to claim 32, further comprising the step of discharging the insulating gas to atmosphere.
