초록

Methods and apparatus for delivering a missile may operate in conjunction with a missile comprising an outer skin. The missile may be configured in a closed position and an open position. In the open position, an aperture is opened in the outer skin, for example to supply air to an air-breathing engine. In the closed position, the aperture is closed.

1. A method for delivering a missile, comprising: launching the missile;opening an aperture in an outer skin of the missile after launching the missile, wherein the aperture opens a passageway to an engine onboard the missile; andfiring the engine to propel the missile after launching the missile;wherein the step of opening includes moving a nose section of the missile relative to and apart from an aft section of the missile;wherein the passageway is defined by a passageway surface that includes: an aft surface extending between an aft edge of the aperture and the engine, wherein at least a portion of the aft surface is conical; anda forward surface extending between a forward edge of the aperture and a terminus; andwherein the terminus is disposed forward of the engine along a longitudinal axis of the missile. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of moving the nose section apart from the aft section comprises sliding a male member attached to at least one of the nose section and the aft section relative to a female member attached to at least one of the nose section and the aft section. 3. The method of claim 1, further comprising locking the aperture in an open position. 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the opening includes moving the aft surface away from the forward surface. 5. The method of claim 4, wherein at least a portion of the forward surface is conical. 6. The method of claim 5, wherein the at least a portion of the aft surface is located nested within the at least a portion of the forward surface prior to the opening. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the launching includes firing the missile from a gun. 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of opening includes increasing an overall length of the missile. 9. The method of claim 1, wherein the moving includes sliding the aft section longitudinally relative to the nose section. 10. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of opening includes extending slidable arms;wherein a first end of each slidable arm is connected to the nose section;wherein a second end of each slidable arm is connected to the aft section; andwherein the step of opening includes moving each slidable arm. 11. The method of claim 10, wherein one of the ends is a female member, and the other of the ends is a male member at least partially disposed within the female member. 12. The method of claim 10, wherein the slidable arms extend around a circumference of the outer skin. 13. The method of claim 10, wherein the slidable arms form part of the outer skin. 14. The method of claim 10, wherein the ends have a reciprocal rectangular shape; andfurther comprising, during flight of the missile, using the ends to resist twisting that arises from torsional movement of the missile. 15. The method of claim 10, wherein the arms are connected to a structural framework that is within the outer skin; andfurther comprising transferring structural forces between the sections of the missile, through the arms. 16. The method of claim 15, wherein the transferring includes transferring through the arms substantially all of the structural forces between sections, when the passageway is open. 17. The method of claim 1, further comprising deploying fins after launching;wherein the fins and the engine are both symmetrically located around a longitudinal axis of the missile. 18. The method of claim 1, further comprising flying the missile as a ballistic projectile after launching and before the firing.
