A system for use in freezing, thawing, transporting or storing biopharmaceutical materials which includes a container, a holder and plurality of heat transfer members. The container is configured to hold biopharmaceutical materials therein. The holder has a cavity for receiving the container and includes an interior surface bounding the cavity. A plurality of pockets contact outer surfaces of the container and is received in the cavity. Each pocket of the plurality of pockets includes a pocket cavity. A heat transfer member actively controls the temperature of biopharmaceutical materials held in the container and is received in the pocket cavity.

A method for use in mixing biopharmaceutical materials, the method comprising: receiving a container means holding biopharmaceutical materials in a holder cavity of a holder;said holder comprising a plurality of pockets contacting an outer surface of said container means, each pocket of said plurality of pockets comprising a pocket cavity;an interior surface of said plurality of pockets bounding the holder cavity; andperiodically moving the holder along a linear path to cause mixing of the biopharmaceutical materials in the container means. 2. The method of claim 1 further comprising receiving a heat transfer member in the pocket cavity and actively controlling a temperature of the heat transfer member to control a temperature of the biopharmaceutical materials held in the container means. 3. The method of claim 2 further comprising inserting a liquid into the pocket cavity and wherein the controlling the temperature comprises controlling the temperature of the heat transfer member to freeze the biopharmaceutical materials, and the controlling the temperature causes a freezing of the liquid to promote heat transfer between the heat transfer member and a wall of the pocket. 4. The method of claim 2 further comprising introducing a supplemental heater into the pocket to provide a pathway clear of ice during a freezing operation caused by the controlling the temperature of the heat transfer member. 5. The method of claim 2 further comprising introducing a supplemental heater into the container means to provide a pathway clear of frozen biopharmaceutical materials during a freezing operation caused by the controlling the temperature of the heat transfer member. 6. The method of claim 2 further comprising inserting a liquid into the pocket cavity and wherein the controlling the temperature comprises controlling the temperature of the liquid to promote heat transfer between the heat transfer member and a wall of the pocket to control a temperature of the biopharmaceutical materials. 7. A method for use in mixing biopharmaceutical materials, the method comprising: receiving a container means holding biopharmaceutical materials in a holder cavity of a holder;a plurality of pockets of the holder contacting an outer surface of said container means, each pocket of said plurality of pockets comprising a pocket cavity;an interior surface of said plurality of pockets bounding the holder cavity; andremoving the biopharmaceutical materials from the container means at a first location and reintroducing the biopharmaceutical materials at a second location of the container means to cause mixing of the biopharmaceutical materials. 8. The method of claim 7 further comprising receiving a heat transfer member in the pocket cavity and actively controlling a temperature of the heat transfer member to control a temperature of the biopharmaceutical materials held in the container means. 9. The method of claim 8 further comprising inserting a liquid into the pocket cavity and wherein the controlling the temperature comprises controlling the temperature of the heat transfer member to freeze the biopharmaceutical materials, and the controlling the temperature causes a freezing of the liquid to promote heat transfer between the heat transfer member and a wall of the pocket. 10. The method of claim 8 further comprising introducing a supplemental heater into the pocket to provide a pathway clear of ice during a freezing operation caused by the controlling the temperature of the heat transfer member. 11. The method of claim 8 further comprising introducing a supplemental heater into the container means to provide a pathway clear of frozen biopharmaceutical materials during a freezing operation caused by the controlling the temperature of the heat transfer member. 12. The method of claim 8 further comprising inserting a liquid into the pocket cavity and wherein the controlling the temperature comprises controlling the temperature of the liquid to promote heat transfer between the heat transfer member and a wall of the pocket to control a temperature of the biopharmaceutical materials. 13. A method for use in mixing biopharmaceutical materials, the method comprising: receiving a container means bolding biopharmaceutical materials in a holder cavity of a holder;a plurality of pockets of the holder contacting an outer surface of said container means, each pocket of said plurality of pockets comprising a pocket cavity;an interior surface of said plurality of pockets bounding the holder cavity,; andmoving a probe in the biopharmaceutical materials in the container means to cause mixing of the biopharmaceutical materials, the probe having a plate having one or more angled orifices connected normally to a shaft and driving the shaft along the long axis of the shaft with a linear stroke. 14. The method of claim 13 further comprising freezing the probe in the biopharmaceutical materials and heating the probe at the start of a thaw of the biopharmaceutical materials to develop a clear working volume free of ice. 15. The method of claim 13 wherein the moving the mixing mechanism comprises rotating an impeller in the biopharmaceutical materials. 16. The method of claim 15 further comprising freezing the impeller in the biopharmaceutical materials and heating the impeller at the start of a thaw of the biopharmaceutical materials to develop a clear working volume free of ice. 17. The method of claim 13 further comprising receiving a heat transfer member in the pocket cavity and actively controlling a temperature of the heat transfer member to control a temperature of the biopharmaceutical materials held in the container means. 18. The method of claim 17 further comprising inserting a liquid into the pocket cavity and wherein the controlling the temperature comprises controlling the temperature of the heat transfer member to freeze the biopharmaceutical materials, and the controlling the temperature causes a freezing of the liquid to promote heat transfer between the heat transfer member and a wall of the pocket. 19. The method of claim 17 further comprising introducing a supplemental heater into the pocket to provide a pathway clear of ice during a freezing operation caused by the controlling the temperature of the heat transfer member. 20. The method of claim 17 further comprising introducing a supplemental heater into the container means to provide a pathway clear of frozen biopharmaceutical materials during a freezing operation caused by the controlling the temperature of the heat transfer member. 21. The method of claim 17 further comprising inserting a liquid into the pocket cavity and wherein the controlling the temperature comprises controlling the temperature of the liquid to promote heat transfer between the heat transfer member and a wall of the pocket to control a temperature of the biopharmaceutical materials. 22. A method for use in mixing biopharmaceutical materials, the method comprising: receiving a container means holding biopharmaceutical materials in a holder cavity of a holder;a plurality of pockets of the holder contacting an outer surface of said container means, each pocket of said plurality of pockets comprising a pocket cavity;an interior surface of said plurality of pockets bounding the holder cavity,; androtating an impeller in the biopharmaceutical materials in the container means to cause mixing of the biopharmaceutical materials. 23. A method for use in mixing biopharmaceutical materials, the method comprising: receiving a container means holding biopharmaceutical materials in a holder cavity of a holder;said holder comprising a plurality of pockets contacting an outer surface of said container means, each pocket of said plurality of pockets comprising a pocket cavity;an interior surface of said plurality of pockets bounding the holder cavity; andreceiving a heat transfer member in the pocket cavity and actively controlling a temperature of the pocket cavity by controlling the temperature of the heat transfer member to control a temperature of the biopharmaceutical materials held in the container means. 24. The method of claim 23 wherein the moving comprises periodically moving the holder along a linear path. 25. The method of claim 23, further comprising inserting a liquid into the pocket cavity and wherein the controlling the temperature comprises controlling the temperature of the heat transfer member to freeze the biopharmaceutical materials, and the controlling the temperature causes a freezing of the liquid to promote heat transfer between the heat transfer member and a wall of the pocket. 26. The method of claim 23 further comprising introducing a supplemental heater into the pocket to provide a pathway clear of ice during a freezing operation caused by the controlling the temperature of the heat transfer member. 27. The method of claim 23 further comprising introducing a supplemental heater into the container means to provide a pathway clear of frozen biopharmaceutical materials during a freezing operation caused by the controlling the temperature of the heat transfer member.
