A device for promoting the clotting of blood comprises a clay material in particle form and a receptacle for containing the clay material. At least a portion of the receptacle is defined by a mesh. Another device comprises a gauze substrate and a clay material disposed on the gauze substrate. Another device is a bandage comprising a substrate, a mesh mounted on the substrate, and particles of a clay material retained in the mesh. A hemostatic sponge comprises a substrate, a hemostatic material disposed on a first surface of the substrate, and a release agent disposed on a second surface of the substrate. The release agent is disposed on the wound-contacting surface of the substrate. When treating a bleeding wound, application of the hemostatic sponge causes at least a portion of the hemostatic material to come into contact with blood through the release agent and through the substrate.

1. A method of manufacturing a hemostatic device comprising: providing a clay material and a binder;providing a gauze substrate comprising strands, the gauze strands initially existing separately from the clay material before the gauze strands and the clay material are combined;applying the clay material and the binder to the substrate;subjecting the substrate to a drying process after applying the clay material and the binder to the substrate;wherein the binder has an effect of substantially preventing the separation of the clay material from the substrate before use; andwherein the device is configured such that when treating bleeding, application of the device is capable of causing blood to be absorbed into the gauze and causing at least a portion of the clay material to come into direct contact with blood to assist in accelerating clotting. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the binder is a polyol. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the binder is selected from the group consisting of chitosan, cellulose, calcium alginate, and polyvinyl alcohol. 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the clay material and binder are applied on at least two sides of the substrate. 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the substrate is immersed in a slurry comprising the clay material and binder. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the substrate is sprayed with a slurry comprising the clay material and the binder. 7. The hemostatic device of claim 1, wherein a slurry of the clay material and the binder is applied to the substrate using a slot-die technique. 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the clay material comprises kaolin or kaolinite. 9. The method of claim 1, wherein said clay material is selected from the group consisting of attapulgite, bentonite, kaolin, kaolinite, and combinations of the foregoing materials. 10. The method of claim 1, further comprising applying to the substrate a pharmaceutically-active composition selected from the group consisting of antibiotics, antifungal agents, antimicrobial agents, anti-inflammatory agents, analgesics, antihistamines, compounds containing silver or copper ions, and combinations of the foregoing compositions. 11. The method of claim 1, wherein the gauze substrate is fabricated from a material selected from the group consisting of cotton, silk, wool, plastic, cellulose, rayon, polyester, and combinations of the foregoing. 12. The method of claim 1, wherein the gauze substrate is flexible to allow the gauze substrate to form to a shape of a bleeding wound and to retain the shape of the bleeding wound. 13. The method of claim 1, further comprising applying a release agent to the substrate. 14. The method of claim 13, wherein said release agent is selected from the group consisting of polyvinyl alcohol, silicone, carboxymethyl cellulose, and gelatinized starch. 15. The method of claim 8, wherein the kaolin or kaolinite comprises particles having diameters of about 0.2 mm. 16. A method of using a hemostatic device to accelerate the clotting of blood from a wound comprising: obtaining a sterile hemostatic device comprising a gauze substrate comprising strands,a clay material and a binder applied to the gauze, wherein the gauze strands initially exist separately from the clay material before the clay material is applied to the gauze strands, wherein the binder has an effect of substantially suppressing clay dust, andwherein the device is configured such that the device is capable of causing blood to be absorbed into the substrate; andapplying the gauze directly to a surface of a bleeding wound to allow the clay material to come into direct contact with blood from the wound to stop bleeding. 17. The method of claim 16, wherein the binder is a polyol. 18. The method of claim 16, wherein the binder is selected from the group consisting of chitosan, cellulose, calcium alginate, and polyvinyl alcohol. 19. The method of claim 16, wherein the clay material and binder are disposed on at least two sides of the substrate. 20. The method of claim 16, wherein the clay material and binder are applied to the substrate by immersing the substrate in a slurry of the clay material and the binder. 21. The method of claim 16, wherein the clay material and binder are applied to the substrate by spraying a slurry of the clay material and the binder onto at least one surface of the substrate. 22. The method of claim 16, wherein the clay material and binder are applied to the substrate by a slot-die technique. 23. The method of claim 16, wherein the clay material comprises kaolin or kaolinite. 24. The method of claim 16, wherein said clay material is selected from the group consisting of attapulgite, bentonite, kaolin, kaolinite, and combinations of the foregoing materials. 25. The method of claim 16, further comprising applying to the substrate a pharmaceutically-active composition selected from the group consisting of antibiotics, antifungal agents, antimicrobial agents, anti-inflammatory agents, analgesics, antihistamines, compounds containing silver or copper ions, and combinations of the foregoing compositions. 26. The method of claim 16, wherein the gauze substrate is fabricated from a material selected from the group consisting of cotton, silk, wool, plastic, cellulose, rayon, polyester, and combinations of the foregoing. 27. The method of claim 16, wherein the gauze substrate is flexible to allow the gauze substrate to form to a shape of a bleeding wound and to retain the shape of the bleeding wound. 28. The method of claim 16, further comprising applying a release agent to the substrate. 29. The method of claim 28, wherein said release agent is selected from the group consisting of polyvinyl alcohol, silicone, carboxymethyl cellulose, and gelatinized starch. 30. The method of claim 23, wherein the kaolin or kaolinite comprises particles having diameters of about 0.2 mm.
