The surgical retention port has an inner cannula defining a throughbore, a plurality of rotatable fingers coupled to the inner cannula, and an outer cannula extending around the inner cannula. Rotation of the inner cannula relative to the outer cannula causes the rotation of the fingers from a first position where the fingers assume a collapsed configuration to a second position where the fingers assume an extended or open configuration.

A surgical retention port according to claim 1, wherein: rotational displacement of said inner and outer cannulas from said first rotational configuration to said second rotational configuration causes said radially extendible fingers to assume said opened arrangement. 3. A surgical retention port according to claim 2, wherein: rotational displacement of said inner and outer cannulas from said second rotational configuration to said first rotational configuration causes said radially extendible fingers to assume said collapsed arrangement. 4. A surgical port according to claim 1, wherein: said bars of said outer cannula including camming surfaces, and upon rotation of said inner cannula relative to said outer cannula from said first rotational orientation to said second rotational orientation, said camming surfaces cause said plurality of radially extendible fingers to move from said collapsed arrangement to said opened arrangement. 5. A surgical retention port according to claim 4, wherein: in said opened arrangement said camming surfaces engage said pivot portions of said fingers. 6. A surgical retention port according to claim 1, wherein: said outer cannula has a shaft portion having an outer periphery defining an oval with a first outer diameter and a second outer diameter. 7. A surgical retention port according to claim 6, further comprising: a locking collar extending about said shaft portion of said outer cannula, said locking collar defining an inner opening having an oval shape with a first inner diameter and a second inner diameter, said first inner diameter being greater than said first outer diameter and said second inner diameter being greater than said second outer diameter, and said second inner diameter being smaller than said first outer diameter. 8. A surgical retention port according to claim 1, further comprising: an actuation element rotationally fixed to said inner cannula and rotatable relative to said outer cannula about said longitudinal axis of said outer cannula. 9. A surgical retention port according to claim 8, wherein: said actuation element includes a proximal end distally displaced relative to said proximal end of said outer cannula. 10. A surgical retention port according to claim 8, wherein: said outer cannula has an outer wall and includes a partially circumferential slot extending through said outer wall, and said actuation element is coupled to said inner cannula through said partially circumferential slot. 11. A surgical retention port according to claim 8, wherein: said outer cannula defines a groove about its outer surface, and said surgical retention port further comprises an O-ring located in said groove and contacting an inner surface of said actuation collar. 12. A method, comprising: a) obtaining a surgical retention port having a longitudinal axis and comprising (i) a hollow inner cannula, (ii) a long pointed instrument removably extending through said inner cannula, said long pointed instrument including a tapered distal tip, said hollow inner cannula extending about said long pointed instrument with said long pointed instrument movable longitudinally relative to said inner cannula, (iii) a plurality of radially extendible fingers coupled to said distal end of said hollow inner cannula, each of said radially extendible fingers having a pivot portion and an extending portion, each of said pivot portions rotating about a pivot axis circumferentially displaced from the pivot axes of the other pivot portions, each of said pivot axes extending parallel to said longitudinal axis, and (iv) a hollow outer cannula having a proximal end, a distal end defining a periphery and a plurality of windows, said distal end including a plurality of bars between said windows, whereinin a first configuration, said inner cannula is in a first rotational orientation relative to said outer cannula along said longitudinal axis and said plurality of radially extendible fingers assume a collapsed arrangement with said extending portions at least partially contained within said plurality of windows and substantially within said periphery, andin a second configuration, said inner cannula rotationally displaced relative to said outer cannula into a second rotational orientation and said plurality of radially extendible fingers assume an opened arrangement with said extending portions extending radially through said plurality of windows and beyond said periphery in a manner substantially perpendicular to said longitudinal axis;b) with said fingers in said collapsed arrangement, pushing said surgical retention port into an incision of a patient such that said distal end of said inner cannula, said distal end of said outer cannula, and said fingers are located inside the patient;c) first rotating said inner and outer cannulas relative to each other from said first rotational orientation to said second rotational orientation to force said fingers into said opened arrangement;d) inserting a surgical instrument through said inner cannula and manipulating the surgical instrument;e) removing the surgical instrument from said inner cannula;f) second rotating said inner and outer cannulas relative to each other from said second rotational orientation to said first rotational orientation to force said fingers into said collapsed arrangement; andh) withdrawing said surgical retention port from the incision. 13. A method according to claim 12, wherein: said surgical retention port further includes an actuation element external said outer cannula,said first rotating includes rotating said actuation element relative to said outer cannula in a first direction, andsaid second rotation includes rotating said actuation element relative to said outer cannula in a second direction opposite said first direction. 14. A surgical retention port for use with a medical instrument, comprising: a hollow inner cannula having a distal end and defining a longitudinal axis, the medical instrument longitudinally displaceable within the inner cannula;a plurality of radially extendible fingers coupled to said distal end of said hollow inner cannula, each of said radially extendible fingers having a pivot portion and an extending portion, each of said pivot portions rotating about a pivot axis circumferentially displaced from the pivot axes of the other pivot portions, each of said pivot axes extending parallel to said longitudinal axis;a hollow outer cannula having a proximal end, a distal end defining a periphery and a plurality of windows, said distal end including a plurality of bars between said windows; andan actuation element rotationally fixed to said inner cannula and rotatable relative to said outer cannula about said longitudinal axis of said outer cannula, whereinsaid outer cannula has an outer wall and includes a partially circumferential slot extending through said outer wall, and said actuation element is coupled to said inner cannula through said partially circumferential slot, andin a first configuration, said inner cannula is in a first rotational orientation relative to said outer cannula and said plurality of radially extendible fingers assume a collapsed arrangement with said extending portions at least partially contained within said plurality of windows and substantially within said periphery, andin a second configuration, said inner cannula is in a second rotational orientation relative to said outer cannula which is rotationally displaced from said first rotational orientation and said plurality of radially extendible fingers assume an opened arrangement with said extending portions extending radially through said plurality of windows and beyond said periphery in a manner substantially perpendicular to said longitudinal axis.
