A ball display case has base and a cover that is securable to the base. When the cover is secured to the base, the cover and base at least partially enclose a space for holding a ball. The case has a pedestal for supporting a ball in the enclosed space. The elevation of the pedestal relative to the base is optionally adjustable. An irreversible lock is adapted for selective application to at least one of the base and the cover such that the lock assumes a locking position that prevents non-destructive removal of the cover from the base. One suitable lock includes a plate having a plurality of recessed areas spaced radially about the plate and a plurality of posts extending away from the plate. Each post is in general radial alignment with one of the recessed areas of the plate and spaced radially inward from the recessed area.

A ball display case comprising: a base;a cover that is securable to the base, the cover and base at least partially enclosing a space for holding a ball when the cover is secured to the base, at least a portion of the cover being constructed of a material that is substantially transparent to visible light for allowing the ball to be viewed from outside said space;a pedestal in said space for supporting a bottom of the ball, wherein the elevation of the pedestal relative to the base is adjustable; andone or more spacers supported by the base and positioned between the pedestal and the base, said one or more spacers having a total combined height selected so the pedestal is supported at a desired level by the spacers,wherein the pedestal comprises a peripheral sidewall and the base has a groove sized and shaped to receive the peripheral sidewall of the pedestal, said one or more spacers being supported by the base in the groove. 2. A ball display case as set forth in claim 1 wherein at least a portion of the pedestal is shaped to conform to the shape of a portion of the ball. 3. A ball display case as set forth in claim 1 wherein said portion of the cover is substantially less transparent to UV and IR light than it is to visible light. 4. A ball display case as set forth in claim 1 wherein the pedestal is slidable up and down relative to the base. 5. A ball display as set forth in claim 1 further comprising an irreversible lock adapted to be secured to at least one of the cover and base in a manner that prevents non-destructive separation of the cover and base from one another. 6. A ball display as set forth in claim 5 wherein the cover and base are configured to be secured to one another by a bayonet connection, and wherein the lock is configured to limit rotation of the cover relative to the base to prevent release of the bayonet connection. 7. A ball display as set forth in claim 6 wherein: the lock comprises a plate and a plurality of posts extending from the plate; the base has a plurality of openings in which the posts are received; and the lock is incapable of withstanding a force required to withdraw the posts from the openings without breaking. 8. A ball display as set forth in claim 1 wherein the base has a hollow center and the pedestal is substantially transparent to visible light such that the ball can be viewed through the pedestal and hollow center of the base. 9. A ball display case comprising: a base having a sidewall;a cover that is securable to the base, the cover and base at least partially enclosing a space for holding a ball when the cover is secured to the base, the cover comprising a top and a sidewall extending down from the top, at least a portion of the cover being constructed of a material that is substantially transparent to visible light for allowing the ball to be viewed from outside said space, wherein the sidewall of the base is visible through the sidewall of the cover;a label positioned between the sidewall of the base and the sidewall of the cover and visible from outside said space through the cover sidewall; anda ball held in said space by a compressive force applied by the cover and base, wherein the cover and base are shaped to generally conform to the outer surface of the ball. 10. A ball display case as set forth in claim 9, wherein the ball is a baseball. 11. A ball display case as set forth in claim 10, wherein the baseball has seams and said compressive force is applied substantially only to the seams of the baseball. 12. A ball display case as set forth in claim 9 wherein the ball display case further comprises a resiliently compressible body that is compressed between the base and cover. 13. A ball display case as set forth in claim 9 wherein the top of the cover is dome-shaped. 14. A ball display case as set forth in claim 13 wherein the dome-shaped top of the cover has a dome-shaped inner surface that is in direct contact with the ball. 15. A ball display case as set forth in claim 14 wherein the ball is a baseball having a raised seam and the dome-shaped inner surface of the top cover is in direct contact with the raised seam over a contact area, the contact area having an arcuate shape corresponding to the shape of a segment of the seam. 16. A ball display case as set forth in claim 9 wherein the cover has an inner surface in direct contact with the ball, the inner surface of the cover being substantially devoid of projections extending toward the ball. 17. A ball display case as set forth in claim 9 wherein the cover is secured to the base by a bayonet connection. 18. A ball display case as set forth in claim 9 wherein at least portions of the cover and base are substantially transparent to visible light so that the top, bottom, and all sides of the ball are visible from outside the display case. 19. A ball display case as set forth in claim 9 wherein the base comprises a pedestal for supporting a bottom of the ball, wherein the elevation of the pedestal relative to the rest of the base is adjustable. 20. A ball display case comprising: a base;a cover that is securable to the base, the cover and base at least partially enclosing a space for holding a ball when the cover is secured to the base, at least a portion of the cover being constructed of a material that is substantially transparent to visible light for allowing the ball to be viewed from outside said space;a pedestal in said space for supporting a bottom of the ball, wherein the elevation of the pedestal relative to the base is adjustable; andan irreversible lock adapted to be secured to at least one of the cover and base in a manner that prevents non-destructive separation of the cover and base from one another, the lock comprising a plate and a plurality of posts extending from the plate, the base having a plurality of openings in which the posts are received,wherein the cover and base are configured to be secured to one another by a bayonet connection, the lock is configured to limit rotation of the cover relative to the base to prevent release of the bayonet connection, and the lock is incapable of withstanding a force required to withdraw the posts from the openings without breaking.
