Articulating mechanisms, link systems, and components thereof, useful for a variety of purposes including, but not limited to, the remote manipulation of instruments such as surgical or diagnostic instruments or tools are provided. The link systems include links wherein at least two adjacent links are pivotable relative to one another around two distinct pivot points. Mechanisms for locking the links are also provided.

1. An articulating mechanism for remote manipulation of a surgical or diagnostic tool comprising: a plurality of links coupled together and substantially aligned along a common longitudinal axis to form an elongate structure, wherein the plurality of links comprise multiple pairs of links, wherein the links of each respective pair are spaced apart from each other, andat least one set of two adjacent links that are independently pivotable relative to one another about two distinct, longitudinally spaced pivot points; andmultiple sets of cables, each set connecting the links of a respective pair of links to one another, wherein movement of one link of a respective pair causes corresponding relative movement of the other link of the respective pair in response to actuation of one or more cables of the set connecting the respective pair. 2. The articulating mechanism of claim 1, wherein the adjacent links of the at least one set of adjacent links have opposing surfaces each having an axially aligned convex protrusion or concave depression and are separated by a bushing interposed between the adjacent links, the bushing contacting the convex protrusion or concave depression of each of the adjacent links. 3. The articulating mechanism of claim 2, wherein the at least one convex protrusion or concave depression is hemispherical. 4. The articulating mechanism of claim 2, wherein the at least one convex protrusion or concave depression is truncated hemispherical. 5. The articulating mechanism of claim 2, wherein the at least one convex protrusion or concave depression is hemispherical tipped. 6. The articulating mechanism of claim 2, wherein the bushing has a concave depression or a convex protrusion that receives the convex protrusion or concave depression of each of the two adjacent links of the at least one set of adjacent links. 7. The articulating mechanism of claim 6, wherein the at least one bushing has two concave depressions on opposite sides. 8. The articulating mechanism of claim 6, wherein the at least one bushing has two convex protrusions on opposite sides. 9. The articulating mechanism of claim 6, wherein the at least one bushing has one concave depression and one convex protrusion on opposite sides. 10. The articulating mechanism of claim 1, wherein each pair of links comprises one link disposed along a relatively proximal portion of the elongate structure and another link disposed along a relatively distal portion of the elongate structure, and wherein movement of the relatively proximal portion causes corresponding relative movement of the relatively distal portion. 11. The articulating mechanism of claim 10, wherein said corresponding relative movement of the relatively distal portion is reciprocal to the movement of the relatively proximal portion. 12. The articulating mechanism of claim 10, wherein said corresponding relative movement of the relatively distal portion mirrors the movement of the relatively proximal portion. 13. The articulating mechanism of claim 1, further comprising a surgical or diagnostic tool attached to a distal end of the elongate structure. 14. The articulating mechanism of claim 13, wherein the tool is selected from a group consisting of a stapler, clamp, grasper, scissors, cutter, an ablation element, and a cauterizing element. 15. The articulating mechanism of claim 1, further comprising an elongate shaft, wherein each pair of links comprises one link disposed proximally of the elongate shaft and another link disposed distally of the elongate shaft. 16. The articulating mechanism of claim 15, wherein the sets of cables extend through the elongate shaft. 17. The articulating mechanism of claim 1, wherein the links include channels configured for passage of cables. 18. The articulating mechanism of claim 1, wherein the plurality of links comprise one or more spacer links that are not links of the multiple pairs of links. 19. The articulating mechanism of claim 18, wherein the one or more spacer links are not connected by the multiple sets of cables. 20. The articulating mechanism of claim 18, wherein each of the one or more spacer links is separated from a link adjacent the respective spacer link by a bushing. 21. The articulating mechanism of claim 20, wherein each of the one or more spacer links comprises opposite surfaces including a convex protrusion or concave depression. 22. The articulating mechanism of claim 1, wherein the cables of a set of cables connecting a pair of links are at a first radial distance from a center of one link of the pair and at a second radial distance from a center of the other link of the pair, wherein the first and second radial distances differ from each other. 23. The articulating mechanism of claim 1, wherein the two, distinct pivot points are aligned along the common longitudinal axis.
