There is provided a method of making a heat treated (HT) coated article to be used in shower door applications, window applications, or any other suitable applications where transparent coated articles are desired. For example, certain embodiments of this invention relate to a method of making a coated article including a step of heat treating a glass substrate coated with at least a layer of or including diamond-like carbon (DLC) and an overlying protective film thereon. In certain example embodiments, the protective film may be of or include both (a) an oxygen blocking or barrier layer, and (b) a release layer. Following and/or during heat treatment (e.g., thermal tempering, or the like) the protective film may be removed. Other embodiments of this invention relate to the pre-HT coated article, or the post-HT coated article.

1. A method of making a heat treated coated article, the method comprising: having a glass substrate with at least one layer comprising carbon on the glass substrate and a protective film on the glass substrate over at least the layer comprising carbon, the protective film including a release layer
1. A method of making a heat treated coated article, the method comprising: having a glass substrate with at least one layer comprising carbon on the glass substrate and a protective film on the glass substrate over at least the layer comprising carbon, the protective film including a release layer from 100-1,000 Å thick and a barrier layer, the release layer and the barrier layer being of different materials, and the release layer being between at least the layer comprising carbon and the barrier layer, and wherein the barrier layer comprises aluminum nitride;heat treating the glass substrate with the layer comprising carbon and the protective film thereon so that during the heat treating the protective film prevents significant burnoff of the layer comprising carbon, wherein the heat treating comprises heating the glass substrate to temperature(s) sufficient for thermal tempering; andremoving at least part of the protective film during and/or after said heat treating. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the release layer comprises an oxide of one or more of boron, titanium boride, magnesium and/or zinc. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the release layer comprises an oxide of zinc. 4. The method of claim 3, wherein the release layer comprises a suboxide of zinc. 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the barrier layer consists essentially of aluminum nitride. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the release layer consists essentially of zinc oxide doped with aluminum. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein, in the protective film, the release layer is more metallic than is the barrier layer. 8. The method of claim 1, wherein a barrier layer comprising silicon oxide and/or silicon nitride is on the glass substrate so as to be located between at least the glass substrate and the layer comprising carbon. 9. The method of claim 1, wherein the heat treating comprises heating the glass substrate with the layer comprising carbon and the protective film thereon using at least temperature(s) of at least 550 degrees C. 10. The method of claim 1, wherein the layer comprising carbon is hydrogenated. 11. The method of claim 1, wherein the coated article is substantially transparent. 12. The method of claim 1, wherein after said removing step at least part of the layer comprising carbon is exposed so as to be an outetinost layer of the coated article. 13. A method of making a heat treated coated article, the method comprising: having a glass substrate with at least one layer comprising carbon on the glass substrate and a protective film on the glass substrate over at least the layer comprising carbon, the protective film including a release layer from 100-1,000 Å thick and a barrier layer, the release layer and the barrier layer being of different materials, and the release layer being between at least the layer comprising carbon and the barrier layer, and wherein the barrier layer comprises aluminum nitride; andheat treating the glass substrate with the layer comprising carbon and the protective film thereon so that during the heat treating the protective film prevents significant burnoff of the layer comprising carbon, wherein the heat treating comprises heating the glass substrate to temperature(s) sufficient for thermal tempering. 14. A method of making a heat treated coated article, the method comprising: having a glass substrate with at least one layer to be protected on the glass substrate and a protective film on the glass substrate over at least the layer to be protected, the protective film including a release layer comprising zinc oxide from 100-1,000 Å thick and a barrier layer comprising aluminum nitride, and the release layer comprising zinc oxide being between at least the layer to be protected and the barrier layer comprising aluminum nitride;heat treating the glass substrate with the layer to be protected and the protective film thereon so that during the heat treating the protective film comprising the release layer comprising zinc oxide and the barrier layer comprising aluminum nitride protects the layer to be protected, wherein the heat treating comprises heating the glass substrate to temperature(s) sufficient for thermal tempering; andremoving at least part of the protective film during and/or after said heat treating. 15. The method of claim 14, wherein the layer to be protected comprises carbon. 16. The method of claim 14, wherein the release layer comprises a suboxide of zinc. 17. The method of claim 14, wherein the barrier layer consists essentially of aluminum nitride. 18. The method of claim 14, wherein the release layer consists essentially of zinc oxide doped with aluminum. 19. The method of claim 14, wherein, in the protective film, the release layer is more metallic than is the barrier layer. 20. The method of claim 14, wherein a layer comprising silicon oxide and/or silicon nitride is on the glass substrate so as to be located between at least the glass substrate and the layer to be protected. 21. The method of claim 14, wherein the heat treating comprises heating the glass substrate with the layer to be protected and the protective film thereon using at least temperature(s) of at least 550 degrees C. 22. The method of claim 14, wherein the coated article is substantially transparent. 23. The method of claim 14, wherein after said removing step at least part of the layer to be protected is exposed so as to be an outermost layer of the coated article. 24. The method of claim 14, wherein the release layer comprising zinc oxide directly contacts the barrier layer comprising aluminum nitride.
