Surgical fluid management systems and methods of operating surgical fluid management systems which may provide one or more functions associated with suction, irrigation, distention, deficit monitoring, infusion, fluid warming, and the like. Some example embodiments may include infra-red lamps arranged to heat fluid flowing through a disposable cartridge. Some example embodiments may provide a three-dimensional fluid path through the cartridge and/or multi-stage heating capabilities. Some example fluid management systems may be selectable between pressure control and flow control modes.

A fluid management system comprising: a pump configured to deliver a fluid from at least one fluid supply container to a site, said site being a surgical site or a patient; anda control system for operating the fluid management system according to operating parameters, said control system including a user interface for allowing a user to select one of a plurality of medical procedures involving delivery of the fluid to the site using the fluid management system, said control system having default operating parameters that are associated with each of said plurality of medical procedures,wherein the default operating parameters associated with selection of a first medical procedure include at least: (a) a target pressure, and(b) a pressure control mode, wherein said control system controls the pump to deliver fluid to the site at approximately the target pressure, andwherein the default operating parameters associated with selection of a second medical procedure include at least: (a) a target flow rate, and(b) a flow control mode, wherein said control system controls the pump to deliver fluid to the site at approximately the target flow rate. 2. The fluid management system of claim 1, further comprising: at least one pressure sensor configured to generate a pressure signal associated with a pressure of the fluid;wherein the control system is configured to control the pump in the pressure control mode based at least in part upon the pressure signal. 3. The fluid management system of claim 2, wherein the at least one pressure sensor comprises at least a first pressure sensor and a second pressure sensor, the first pressure sensor and the second pressure sensor being configured to generate respective pressure signals associated with the pressure of the fluid. 4. The fluid management system of claim 3, wherein the control system compares the first pressure signal to the second pressure signal to determine whether the respective pressure signals are accurate. 5. The fluid management system of claim 1, wherein the pump includes a positive displacement pump;wherein a fluid flow rate through the pump is substantially directly related to a speed of operation of the pump; andwherein the control system is configured to control the pump in the flow control mode based at least in part upon a flow rate calculated based upon the speed of the pump. 6. The fluid management system of claim 1, wherein said user interface includes a touch screen interface configured to display at least one operating parameter and to receive at least one command; wherein the control system is selectable between the pressure control mode and the flow control mode using the touch screen. 7. The fluid management system of claim 6, wherein the touch screen is configurable with respect to at least one of content and layout. 8. The fluid management system of claim 1, further comprising: a disposable tubing and cartridge set including: a connector adapted to couple with the at least one fluid supply container;a heater assembly for heating the fluid prior to delivery of the fluid to the site;a heating cartridge configured to be received within the heater assembly;one of: a trumpet valve or a luer lock fitting;an upstream irrigation tubing section fluidicly coupling the connector and the heating cartridge; anda downstream irrigation tubing section fluidicly coupling the heating cartridge and (i) the trumpet valve or (ii) the luer lock fitting. 9. The fluid management system of claim 8, wherein the trumpet valve includes a tip configured for suction and irrigation. 10. The fluid management system of claim 9, wherein the tip is further configured for electrocautery. 11. The fluid management system of claim 1, wherein said fluid management system further comprises: a remote pressure sensor configured for placement in a body cavity of the patient; andsaid control system operatively connected to the pump and the remote pressure sensor, the control system being configured to receive, from the remote pressure sensor, a signal associated with a pressure of the fluid within the body cavity;wherein the control system is configured to maintain a desired fluid pressure based at least in part upon the signal received from the remote pressure sensor. 12. The fluid management system of claim 11, wherein the signal received from the remote pressure sensor is at least one of an analog electrical signal, a digital electrical signal, and a pneumatic signal. 13. The fluid management system of claim 1, further comprising: a suction container support assembly including: a suction container support including a plurality of openings, each of the plurality of openings being configured to receive a respective suction container therein; anda base comprising at least three spaced-apart load cells, the suction container support being substantially supported by the at least three spaced-apart load cells;wherein the plurality of openings are arranged such that individual centers of mass of the suction containers received within the openings are disposed inwardly with respect to the spaced-apart load cells. 14. The fluid management system of claim 13, wherein the base includes four substantially symmetrically spaced-apart load cells; andwherein the suction container support includes four substantially symmetrically arranged openings. 15. The fluid management system of claim 13, wherein individual ones of the plurality of openings are independently adjustable to receive suction containers of a plurality of sizes. 16. The fluid management system of claim 15, further comprising, for each of the plurality of openings, a generally radially slidable adjuster, the adjusting being selectively securable in a desired position by a respective knob. 17. The fluid management system of claim 1, wherein said default operating parameters associated with selection of the first medical procedure further include: a pressure alarm setpoint indicative of a maximum pressure, said control system activating an alarm when a monitored pressure exceeds the maximum pressure. 18. The fluid management system of claim 1, wherein at least one of said plurality of medical procedures involves one or more of the following fluid delivery functions: (a) irrigation at the site,(b) distention of a body cavity at the site,(c) distention of a body cavity at the site and irrigation at the site, and(d) infusion of the fluid into the patient. 19. The fluid management system of claim 1, wherein said plurality of medical procedures selectable by the user includes medical procedures of one or more of the following medical disciplines: (a) gynecology,(b) obstetrics,(c) urology,(d) orthopedics,(e) general surgery, and(f) trauma. 20. The fluid management system of claim 1, wherein said plurality of medical procedures selectable by the user includes one or more of the following medical procedures: hysteroscopy,ureteroscopy,laparascopy, andinfusion. 21. The fluid management system of claim 1, further comprising: a heater assembly for heating the fluid prior to delivery of the fluid to the site. 22. The fluid management system of claim 21, wherein one of said default operating parameters determines whether said control system enables the heater assembly to heat the fluid. 23. The fluid management system of claim 21, wherein one of said default operating parameters is a target temperature for the fluid delivered to the site, wherein said control system controls the heater assembly to maintain a temperature of the fluid delivered to the site according to the target temperature. 24. The fluid management system of claim 23, wherein said user interface further comprises a temperature selection for adjusting the target temperature within a predetermined temperature range. 25. A fluid management system of claim 23, wherein said control system adjusts the heater assembly to maintain the temperature of the fluid delivered to the site according to the target temperature based on at least (i) an inlet fluid temperature and (ii) a current flow rate of the fluid. 26. The fluid management system of claim 21, wherein said user interface further comprises a heater selection for enabling and disabling the heater assembly. 27. The fluid management system of claim 21, wherein said fluid management system further comprises: a tubing and cartridge set including: a cartridge configured to be received within said heater assembly, the cartridge including an internal fluid path,a first section of tubing extending at least partway from the at least one fluid supply container to the cartridge, anda second section of tubing extending from the cartridge at least partway to the site. 28. The fluid management system of claim 1, wherein said user interface further comprises a pressure selection for adjusting the target pressure within a predetermined pressure range. 29. The fluid management system of claim 1, wherein said user interface further comprises a flow rate selection for adjusting the target flow rate within a predetermined flow rate range. 30. The fluid management system of claim 1, wherein the control system adjusts a speed of the pump to maintain delivery of the fluid to the site at approximately the target flow rate. 31. The fluid management system of claim 1, wherein the control system adjusts a speed of the pump to maintain delivery of the fluid to the site at approximately the target pressure. 32. The fluid management system of claim 1, wherein one of said default operating parameters determines whether said control system enables fluid deficit monitoring, said control system performing fluid deficit monitoring by determining a fluid deficit that is a difference between (i) a volume of fluid delivered to the site from the at least one fluid supply container and (ii) a volume of fluid returned from the site to at least one fluid collection container. 33. The fluid management system of claim 32, wherein one of said default operating parameters is a deficit alarm limit indicative of a maximum fluid deficit, said control system activating a deficit alarm when the fluid deficit exceeds the maximum fluid deficit. 34. The fluid management system of claim 32, wherein said user interface further comprises a deficit alarm limit selection for adjusting the deficit alarm limit within a predetermined range. 35. The fluid management system of claim 32, wherein said user interface further comprises a deficit monitoring selection for enabling and disabling the fluid deficit monitoring. 36. The fluid management system of claim 32, wherein one of said default operating parameters is a perforation alarm limit indicative of a maximum rate of change of said fluid deficit, said control system activating a perforation alarm when the rate of change of said fluid deficit exceeds the maximum rate of change of said fluid deficit. 37. The fluid management system of claim 36, wherein said user interface further comprises a perforation alarm limit selection for adjusting the perforation alarm limit within a predetermined range. 38. The fluid management system of claim 1, further comprising: at least one fluid collection container for receiving fluid returned from the site;at least one load cell for generating a first electrical signal indicative of a weight of the at least one fluid supply container; andat least one load cell configured to generate a second electrical signal associated with a weight of the at least one fluid collection container,wherein said control system determines a fluid deficit using the first and second electrical signals by calculating a difference between (1) an initial total system weight including an initial weight of the at least one fluid supply container and an initial weight of the at least one fluid collection container and (2) a current total system weight including a current weight of the at least one fluid supply container and a current weight of the at least one fluid collection container. 39. The fluid management system of claim 1, wherein said system further comprises at least one bubble detector. 40. The fluid management system of claim 39, wherein said at least one bubble detector is used to detect a bubble in the fluid. 41. The fluid management system of claim 39, wherein said at least one bubble detector is used to detect presence of fluid. 42. The fluid management system of claim 39, wherein said second procedure is an infusion procedure that infuses fluid into a patient and said default operating parameters associated with selection of the infusion procedure includes monitoring the at least one bubble detector, wherein said control system monitors the at least one bubble detector to control operation of the pump to prevent introducing air into the patient. 43. The fluid management system of claim 1, wherein the pump includes a positive displacement pump. 44. The fluid management system of claim 43, wherein said positive displacement pump includes a peristaltic pump. 45. The fluid management system of claim 1, wherein said user interface includes selection options for selecting one or more of the following: fluid deficit monitoring to monitor a fluid deficit associated with delivery of the fluid to the site and return of the fluid from the site; andfluid warming to warm the fluid delivered to the site.
