A device for promoting the clotting of blood comprises a clay material in particle form and a receptacle for containing the clay material. At least a portion of the receptacle is defined by a mesh. Another device comprises a gauze substrate and a clay material disposed on the gauze substrate. Another device is a bandage comprising a substrate, a mesh mounted on the substrate, and particles of a clay material retained in the mesh. A hemostatic sponge comprises a substrate, a hemostatic material disposed on a first surface of the substrate, and a release agent disposed on a second surface of the substrate. The release agent is disposed on the wound-contacting surface of the substrate. When treating a bleeding wound, application of the hemostatic sponge causes at least a portion of the hemostatic material to come into contact with blood through the release agent and through the substrate.

1. A sterilized device for promoting the clotting of blood, comprising: a gauze comprising strands;a clay material disposed on the gauze;a calcium alginate binder, comprising a material distinct from the gauze and the clay material that adheres at least a portion of the clay material to a surface of the gauze so that the device is substantially free of loose clay material;wherein the device is substantially dry so as to be capable of absorbing blood; andwherein the device is configured such that when treating a bleeding wound, application of such device is capable of causing blood to be absorbed into the gauze and causing at least a portion of the clay material to come into direct contact with blood from the bleeding wound to assist in accelerating clotting. 2. A hemostatic device for promoting the clotting of blood in a bleeding wound, comprising: a gauze substrate comprising strands;a clay material disposed on the strands of the gauze substrate; anda calcium alginate binder that adheres at least a portion of the clay material to the gauze substrate;wherein the device is configured such that when treating a bleeding wound, application of such device is capable of causing blood to be absorbed into the gauze and causing at least a portion of the clay material to come into direct contact with blood from the bleeding wound to assist in accelerating clotting. 3. The device of claim 1, wherein the clay comprises kaolin. 4. The device of claim 1, wherein the binder further comprises chitosan, polyvinyl alcohol, guar gum, gelatinized starches, polysaccharides, cellulose, or carboxymethylcellulose. 5. The device of claim 1, wherein the gauze is nonwoven. 6. The device of claim 1, wherein the gauze comprises polyester. 7. The device of claim 1, wherein the gauze comprises rayon. 8. The device of claim 7, wherein the gauze comprises polyester. 9. The device of claim 3, wherein at least one of an analgesic and an anti-inflammatory agent is mixed with, associated with, or incorporated into the kaolin. 10. The device of claim 9, wherein an analgesic is mixed with, associated with, or incorporated into the kaolin. 11. The device of claim 3, wherein at least one of an antibiotic, an antifungal agent, an anti-microbial agent, a silver ions, and copper ions is mixed with, associated with, or incorporated into the kaolin. 12. The device of claim 1, further comprising the clay material impregnated into the gauze. 13. The device of claim 1, wherein kaolin is present in the device at a weight that is at least about 44% of the total weight of the gauze and the kaolin in the device. 14. The device of claim 1, wherein the device is configured to substantially absorb blood. 15. A device for promoting the clotting of blood, comprising: a gauze that is in a state such that it is not saturated with a liquid, and is configured so as to be capable of absorbing a substantial amount of blood;a clay material disposed on the gauze;a calcium alginate binder, comprising a material that is distinct from the gauze and the clay, that adheres at least a portion of the clay material to a surface of the gauze so that the device is substantially free of loose clay;wherein the clay material is positioned on the device in a region configured to contact blood when the device is placed on a bleeding wound. 16. The device of claim 15, wherein the clay comprises kaolin. 17. The device of claim 15, wherein the binder further comprises chitosan, polyvinyl alcohol, guar gum, gelatinized starches, polysaccharides, cellulose, or carboxymethylcellulose. 18. The device of claim 15, wherein the gauze is nonwoven. 19. The device of claim 15, wherein the gauze comprises polyester. 20. The device of claim 19, wherein the gauze comprises rayon. 21. A method of promoting the clotting of blood, comprising administering the device of claim 15 to a person suffering from a wound with a sufficient amount of bleeding so as to have substantial need for use of a such a device.
