An improved luer lock receiving septum having a configuration which provides rapid and tight resealing and yet allows penetration of the septum by the luer tip with a low penetration force. The elongated septum includes an upper portion of enlarged diameter having a target surface, a central slit, and a central, lower septum extension projecting about the slit below the upper portion and into a housing so that following luer insertion there is provided sufficient room for both the laterally displaced extension of the septum, the luer taper, and the housing to be received into a conventional luer lock connector. The septum is further preferably configured to minimize or eliminate the negative pressure deflection normally associated with the withdrawal of the large diameter luer cannula from an enclosed fluid filled lumen or chamber, by substantially isolating the lumen or chamber from the septum material displacement resultant from luer insertion. In an exemplary embodiment, the luer receiving septum is provided at a port of a stop cock.

A method for mitigating negative pressure within a flow channel of a luer receiving valve during the withdrawal of a male luer from the valve, the valve comprising a luer valve housing having an inlet and a housing proximal portion adjacent the inlet, a septum having a septum proximal portion within the housing proximal portion and a resealable slit formed in the septum proximal portion, said resealable slit extending within a housing central portion, and a flow channel distal of said resealable slit, the method comprising: inserting a male luer mounted within a threadable luer lock connector shroud into the septum through at least a portion of the resealable slit;receiving the housing proximal portion into said threadable luer lock connector shroud, along with the septum proximal portion; andrestraining the septum against deflection induced by the male luer into the distal flow channel when the male luer has been inserted into the septum through said at least a portion of the slit and placed in fluid communication with the distal flow channel wherein the septum has a central portion having a distal end and the slit has a closed distal portion extending to the distal end of the central portion, and said step of inserting a male luer causes a portion of the slit that extends through the distal end of the central portion of the septum to open from a closed sealing position, said restraining being accomplished at least in part by a distal support portion of said housing provided adjacent the distal end of the central portion of the septum through which said resealable slit extends; wherein the septum further comprises a distal portion having a lateral portion, the restraining step comprising restraining said lateral portion of the septum against said deflection. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein said central portion comprises a sealed proximal end of the flow channel adjacent the distal support portion, said sealed proximal end being forcefully opened and deflected laterally by the male luer. 3. The method of claim 2, wherein said central portion is deflected laterally proximal to the distal support portion and away from the flow channel by the male luer. 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the support portion is a laterally projecting floor, said lateral portion extends laterally outwardly from said distal flow channel in contact with said laterally projecting floor, said restraining of said lateral portion being accomplished, at least in part, by said floor. 5. A method for mitigating negative pressure within a flow channel of a luer receiving valve during the withdrawal of a male luer from the valve, the valve comprising a luer valve housing having an inlet and a housing proximal portion adjacent the inlet, a septum having a septum proximal portion within the housing proximal portion and a resealable slit formed in the septum proximal portion, said resealable slit extending within a housing central portion, and a flow channel distal of said resealable slit, the method comprising: inserting a male luer mounted within a threadable luer lock connector shroud into the septum through at least a portion of the resealable slit;receiving the housing proximal portion into said threadable luer lock connector shroud, along with the septum proximal portion; andrestraining the septum against deflection induced by the male luer into the distal flow channel when the male luer has been inserted into the septum through said at least a portion of the slit and placed in fluid communication with the distal flow channel;wherein the septum has a central portion having a distal end and the slit has a closed distal portion extending to the distal end of the central portion at a distal end of the septum, and said step of inserting a male luer causes a portion of the slit that extends through the distal end of the central portion of the septum to open from a closed sealing position. 6. The method of claim 5, said restraining being accomplished at least in part by a distal support portion of said housing provided adjacent the distal end of the central portion of the septum through which said resealable slit extends. 7. The method of claim 6, wherein the septum further comprises a distal portion having a lateral portion, the restraining step comprising restraining said lateral portion of the septum against said deflection.
