A surgical stapling system in accordance with the present invention may have fewer components, less assembly and manufacturing time, and may accommodate larger staples which are at least partially embedded in the driver. In various embodiments, a surgical stapling system comprises a staple, the staple including a deformable member, and a stapler, the stapler including an anvil, a staple cartridge for removably storing the staple, and a cam movable between a first position and a second position. In these embodiments, the surgical stapling system further comprises a driver attached to the staple, the driver being operatively engaged with the cam to move the staple toward the anvil when the cam is moved between the first position and the second position.

A surgical stapling system, comprising: a staple, said staple including a deformable member;a stapler, including: an anvil;a staple cartridge for removably storing said staple; anda cam movable between a first position and a second position; anda rigid driver configured to receive a driving force thereto and drive said deformable member into tissue, wherein said rigid driver is integrally attached to said staple, said cam being configured to directly engage said rigid driver to move said staple toward said anvil when said cam is moved between said first position and said second position. 8. The surgical stapling system of claim 7, wherein said driver is overmolded onto a portion of said staple. 9. The surgical stapling system of claim 7, wherein said driver includes a first angled surface, wherein said cam includes a second angled surface, and wherein said second angled surface is configured to co-operate with said first angled surface to move said staple toward said anvil. 10. The surgical stapling system of claim 7, wherein said driver is comprised of a bioabsorbable material. 11. The surgical stapling system of claim 7, wherein at least a portion of said driver is comprised of an expandable material which can expand to compress tissue positioned intermediate said driver and said deformable member. 12. The surgical stapling system of claim 7, wherein said deformable member is a first deformable member, said staple further including a second deformable member and a base, said first and second deformable members extending from said base, wherein at least a portion of said base is embedded in said driver. 13. A method for processing an instrument for surgery, said method comprising: obtaining said stapler of claim 7;sterilizing said stapler; andstoring said stapler in a sterile container. 14. A surgical staple, comprising: a deformable member;a base including a length, said deformable member extending from said base; anda rigid driver configured to receive a driving force thereto and drive said deformable member into tissue, wherein at least a portion of said rigid driver is integrally formed with at least one of said base and said deformable member, said rigid driver including:a cam-contacting surface, said cam-contacting surface configured to operatively engage with a cam of a stapler, wherein said rigid driver extends between said cam-contacting surface and at least one of said base and said deformable member; anda tissue-contacting surface, said deformable member configured to hold tissue intermediate said deformable member and said tissue-contacting surface, wherein said tissue-contacting surface of said rigid driver extends substantially along the entire length of said base. 15. The surgical staple of claim 14, wherein said rigid driver is comprised of a bioabsorbable material. 16. The surgical staple of claim 14, wherein at least a portion of said rigid driver is comprised of an expandable material which can expand to compress tissue positioned intermediate said rigid driver and said deformable member. 17. A method for processing an instrument for surgery, said method comprising: obtaining the stapler of claim 14;sterilizing the stapler; andstoring the stapler in a sterile container. 18. A method for processing an instrument for surgery, said method comprising: obtaining the stapler of claim 1;sterilizing the stapler; andstoring the stapler in a sterile container. 19. A staple cartridge, comprising: a cartridge body, comprising a staple cavity; anda surgical staple, wherein said staple cavity is configured to receive said staple, and wherein said staple comprises: a deformable member;a base, said deformable member extending from said base; anda rigid driver including a surface configured to receive a driving force thereto and drive said deformable member into tissue, wherein said rigid driver is integrally attached to at least one of said deformable member and said base, said rigid driver configured to be operatively engaged with a cam of a stapler. 20. The staple cartridge of claim 19, wherein said rigid driver is overmolded onto said base. 21. The staple cartridge of claim 19, wherein said surface comprises a beveled surface. 22. The staple cartridge of claim 19, wherein said rigid driver is comprised of a bioabsorbable material. 23. The staple cartridge of claim 19, wherein at least a portion of said rigid driver is comprised of an expandable material which can expand to compress tissue positioned intermediate said rigid driver and said deformable member. 24. The staple cartridge of claim 19, said staple further including a second deformable member extending from said base, wherein at least a portion of said base is embedded in said rigid driver. 25. A staple cartridge, comprising: a cartridge body comprising a staple cavity; anda surgical staple, wherein said staple cavity is configured to receive said staple, and wherein said staple comprises: a deformable member;a base, said deformable member extending from said base; anda rigid driver configured to receive a driving force thereto and drive said deformable member into tissue, wherein at least a portion of said rigid driver is integrally formed with at least one of said base and said deformable member, said rigid driver including: a cam-contacting surface, said cam-contacting surface configured to operatively engage with a cam of a stapler, wherein said rigid driver extends between said cam-contacting surface and at least one of said base and said deformable member; anda tissue-contacting surface, said deformable member configured to hold tissue intermediate said deformable member and said tissue-contacting surface. 26. The staple cartridge of claim 25, wherein said rigid driver is comprised of a bioabsorbable material. 27. The staple cartridge of claim 25, wherein at least a portion of said rigid driver is comprised of an expandable material which can expand to compress tissue positioned intermediate said rigid driver and said deformable member. 28. A staple cartridge for use with a surgical instrument, said staple cartridge comprising: a cartridge body, comprising a staple cavity; anda surgical staple, wherein said staple cavity is configured to receive said staple, and wherein said staple comprises: a base;a deformable member extending from said base; anda driver integrally attached to at least one of said deformable member and said base, wherein said driver comprises a rigid surface configured to receive a driving force thereto, and wherein the driving force is configured to eject said staple from said staple cavity. 29. The staple cartridge of claim 28, wherein said driver is overmolded onto said base. 30. The staple cartridge of claim 28, wherein said rigid surface comprises a beveled surface. 31. The staple cartridge of claim 28, wherein said driver is comprised of a bioabsorbable material. 32. The staple cartridge of claim 28, wherein at least a portion of said driver is comprised of an expandable material which can expand to compress tissue positioned intermediate said driver and said deformable member. 33. The staple cartridge of claim 28, wherein said staple further comprises a second deformable member extending from said base, and wherein at least a portion of said base is embedded in said driver. 34. The staple cartridge of claim 28, wherein said driver is configured to be operatively engaged with a cam of the surgical instrument, and wherein the cam exerts the driving force on said rigid surface of said driver to eject said staple from said staple cavity. 35. A staple cartridge for use with a surgical instrument, said staple cartridge comprising: a cartridge body, comprising a staple cavity; anda surgical staple, wherein said staple cavity is configured to receive said staple, and wherein said staple comprises: a base;a deformable member extending from said base; anda driver, wherein at least a portion of said driver is integrally formed with at least one of said base and said deformable member, and wherein said driver comprises: a rigid portion configured to receive a driving force thereto, wherein the driving force is configured to eject said staple from said staple cavity;a cam-contacting surface, wherein said cam-contacting surface is configured to operatively engage with a cam of the surgical instrument, and wherein said driver extends between said cam-contacting surface and at least one of said base and said deformable member; anda tissue-contacting surface, wherein said deformable member is configured to hold tissue intermediate said deformable member and said tissue-contacting surface. 36. The staple cartridge of claim 34, wherein said driver is comprised of a bioabsorbable material. 37. The staple cartridge of claim 35, wherein at least a portion of said driver is comprised of an expandable material which can expand to compress tissue positioned intermediate said driver and said deformable member. 38. The staple cartridge of claim 35, wherein the cam of the surgical instrument exerts the driving force on said rigid portion of said driver to eject said staple from said staple cavity.
