A clip for engaging tissue includes a generally annular-shaped body defining a plane and disposed about a central axis extending normal to the plane. The body includes alternating inner and outer curved regions, defining a zigzag pattern about a periphery of the clip. The body is biased towards a planar configuration lying in the plane and deflectable towards a transverse configuration extending out of the plane. Tines extend from the inner curved regions, the tines being oriented towards the central axis in the planar configuration, and parallel to the central axis in the transverse configuration. The tines may include primary tines and secondary tines that are shorter than the primary tines. The primary tines may be disposed on opposing inner curved regions and oriented towards one another such that they overlap in the planar configuration.

1. An arteriotomy tissue closure device comprising: a plurality of tines having proximal and distal ends, the tines being commonly connected at their proximal ends and having sharp distal tips, the sharp distal tips being oriented toward a central axis of the arteriotomy tissue closure device; andat least one, but fewer than all, of the tines having a tissue stop disposed along the tine, each tissue stop extending from a single tine of the plurality of tines and defining a surface that extends substantially orthogonally to the longitudinal direction of the tine in order to limit advancement of the tine through tissue once the tissue stop reaches the tissue, each tissue stop flaring from the proximal end of the tine to which each tissue stop is connected a distal end of the tine to which each tissue stop is connected towards. 2. The arteriotomy tissue closure device as defined in claim 1; wherein each stop is formed with a generally triangular shape that extends transversely of the length of the associated tine, the triangular shape providing an enlarged inwardly facing area adapted to draw tissue inwardly during inward closure of the tines. 3. The arteriotomy tissue closure device as defined in claim 2, wherein each stop is generally triangular, the distal facing surface being positioned at the base of the triangle. 4. The arteriotomy tissue closure device as defined in claim 2, wherein each stop is generally triangular, the base of the triangle being positioned at the distal end thereof. 5. The arteriotomy tissue closure device as defined in claim 2, wherein each stop is widest at the distal end thereof. 6. The arteriotomy tissue closure device as defined in claim 2, wherein each stop extends from a proximal end to a distal end, the width of the stop being greater at the distal end than at the proximal end thereof. 7. The arteriotomy tissue closure device as defined in claim 1 wherein the common connection at the proximal ends of the tines is constructed and arranged to enable independent movement of the tines relative to each other. 8. The arteriotomy tissue closure device as defined in claim 7 wherein the common connection enables the tines to shift axially relative to each other. 9. The arteriotomy tissue closure device as defined in claim 7, wherein the plurality of tines comprises at least one primary tine and at least one secondary tine, the at least one primary tine having a tissue stop and the at least one secondary tine being free of tissue stops whereby the advancement of the at least one secondary tine through tissue may continue independently after the advancement of the at least one primary tine has been materially resisted by the tissue. 10. The arteriotomy tissue closure device as defined in claim 1, wherein the plurality of tines comprises at least one primary tine and at least one secondary tine, each primary tine having a tissue stop and each secondary tine being free of tissue stops whereby the advancement of each primary tine against tissue may cause the tissue to deform and wherein each secondary tine may pass through tissue without presenting substantial resistance to the ability of the tissue to deform. 11. The arteriotomy tissue closure device as defined in claim 10 wherein the closure device has only two of the primary and two of the secondary tines. 12. The arteriotomy tissue closure device as defined in claim 10 wherein the closure device has a plurality of primary tines and a plurality of secondary tines. 13. The arteriotomy tissue closure device as defined in claim 1, wherein the tissue closure device comprises a clip. 14. The arteriotomy tissue closure device as defined in claim 1, wherein the tines are oriented generally parallel to each other during deployment. 15. An arteriotomy tissue closure device comprising: a plurality of tines having proximal and distal ends and each oriented in a common direction about a central axis, the tines being commonly connected at their proximal ends and having sharp distal tips, the sharp distal tips being oriented toward the central axis of the arteriotomy tissue closure device; andat least one, but fewer than all, of the tines having a tissue stop disposed along the tine, each tissue stop extending from a single tine of the plurality of tines and defining a surface that extends substantially orthogonally to the longitudinal direction of the tine in order to limit advancement of the tine through tissue once the tissue stop reaches the tissue, each tissue stop flaring from the proximal end of the tine to which each tissue stop is connected a distal end of the tine to which each tissue stop is connected towards.
