The burner assembly of claim 1, wherein: the first foraminous outer burner wall portion is cylindrical in shape and the first zone has a first end closed by the interior wall and a second end communicated with the first fuel and air inlet passage; andthe second foraminous outer burner wall portion is cylindrical in shape and the second zone has an end closed by the interior wall. 3. The burner assembly of claim 2, wherein the second zone has another end covered by foraminous material comprising part of the second foraminous outer burner wall portion. 4. The burner assembly of claim 1, wherein: the second fuel and air inlet passage comprises a supply duct extending axially from the interior wall. 5. The burner assembly of claim 1, wherein: an external surface area of the second foraminous outer burner wall portion is in a range of from four to six times an external surface area of the first foraminous outer burner wall portion. 6. The burner assembly of claim 1, further comprising: a direct spark ignition element adjacent the first foraminous outer burner wall portion. 7. The burner assembly of claim 1, wherein: the first and second foraminous outer burner wall portions comprise a continuous cylindrical foraminous outer burner wall. 8. The burner assembly of claim 1, further comprising: a cylindrical heat exchanger wall defining a combustion chamber within which the first and second foraminous outer burner wall portions are received, the heat exchanger wall having a first smaller diameter portion within which the first foraminous outer burner wall portion is received, and the heat exchanger wall having a second larger diameter portion within which the second foraminous outer burner wall portion is received; andwherein the first and second foraminous outer burner wall portions are each cylindrical and have equal diameters. 9. The burner assembly of claim 1, wherein the first and second foraminous outer burner wall portions are each cylindrical and have equal diameters. 10. A burner assembly, comprising: a first foraminous outer wall portion;a second foraminous outer wall portion;at least one interior wall separating first and second interior zones, the first and second interior zones being adjacent the first and second foraminous outer wall portions, respectively;a first fuel and air inlet passage communicated with the first interior zone;a second fuel and air inlet passage communicated with the second interior zone; andwherein the first interior zone is cylindrical in shape and has an end closed by the at least one interior wall; andwherein the second interior zone is cylindrical in shape and has an end closed by the at least one interior wall. 11. The burner assembly of claim 10, wherein: the second fuel and air inlet passage comprises a supply duct extending axially from the at least one interior wall through the first interior zone. 12. The burner assembly of claim 10, wherein: an external surface area of the second foraminous outer wall portion is in a range of from one to six times an external surface area of the first foraminous outer wall portion. 13. The burner assembly of claim 10, further comprising: a direct spark ignition element adjacent the first foraminous outer wall portion. 14. The burner assembly of claim 10, wherein: the first and second foraminous outer wall portions comprise a continuous cylindrical foraminous burner wall. 15. The burner assembly of claim 10, further comprising: a cylindrical heat exchanger wall defining a combustion chamber within which the first and second foraminous outer wall portions are received, the heat exchanger wall having a first smaller diameter portion within which the first foraminous outer wall portion is received, and the heat exchanger wall having a second larger diameter portion within which the second foraminous outer wall portion is received; andwherein the first and second foraminous outer wall portions are each cylindrical and have equal diameters. 16. The burner assembly of claim 10, wherein: the first and second foraminous outer wall portions are each cylindrical and have equal diameters. 17. The burner assembly of claim 10, wherein: the assembly includes a mounting flange spaced from the at least one interior wall;the assembly has an assembly length from the mounting flange to the second end of the second interior zone, the assembly length being less than about 13.0 inches; andthe burner assembly has a burner output capacity of at least about 1.5 MM BTU/hr. 18. The burner assembly of claim 17, wherein: the burner assembly has a burner output capacity of at least about 3.0 MM BTU/hr. 19. The burner assembly of claim 17, wherein: at least one of the first and second foraminous outer wall portions define a maximum burner width transverse to the assembly length; anda ratio of the assembly length to the maximum burner width is in a range of from about 0.4 to about 1.2. 20. The burner assembly of claim 10, wherein: the at least one interior wall comprises at least two interior walls separating at least three interior zones, said first and second zones being two of the at least three interior zones. 21. The burner assembly of claim 10, further comprising: a header wall spaced from the at least one interior wall; andwherein the first interior zone has another end closed by the header wall. 22. The burner assembly of claim 21, wherein the header wall includes a mounting flange. 23. The burner assembly of claim 10, wherein: the assembly has a longitudinal axis defining a central axis of the cylindrical interior zones; andthe at least one interior wall extends generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis. 24. The burner assembly of claim 10, wherein: the second interior zone includes a second end covered by foraminous material and comprising part of the second foraminous outer wall portion. 25. A burner assembly, comprising: a header end wall;a distal end wall;a peripheral side wall;an interior defined within the header end wall, the distal end wall and the peripheral side wall;at least one interior wall dividing the interior into at least a first zone and a second zone;the peripheral side wall including a first foraminous outer wall portion communicated with the first zone, and a second foraminous outer wall portion communicated with the second zone;the assembly having an assembly length from the header end wall to the distal end wall, the assembly length being in a range of from about 10.0 inches to 13.0 inches;the peripheral side wall defining a maximum burner width transverse to the assembly length; andwherein a ratio of the assembly length to the maximum burner width is in a range of from about 0.4 to about 1.2. 26. The burner assembly of claim 25, wherein: the peripheral side wall includes a non-foraminous collar extending from the header wall to the first foraminous outer wall portion. 27. The burner assembly of claim 25, wherein: the distal end wall comprises a foraminous distal end wall. 28. The apparatus of claim 27, wherein: the first zone is adjacent the header wall and the second zone is adjacent the distal end wall; andthe second foraminous outer wall portion plus the foraminous distal end wall have a total outer burner surface area in the range of from one to six times an outer burner surface area of the first foraminous outer wall portion. 29. The burner assembly of claim 27, wherein: the first and second foraminous outer wall portions and the foraminous distal end wall are defined by a continuous foraminous sock. 30. The burner assembly of claim 25, further comprising: a first fuel and air inlet passage communicated with the first zone; anda supply duct extending through the header wall and the at least one interior wall and defining a second fuel and air passage communicated with the second zone. 31. The apparatus of claim 25, wherein: the first and second foraminous outer wall portions are each cylindrical and have equal diameters. 32. The apparatus of claim 25, wherein: the burner assembly has a burner output capacity of at least about 1.5 MM BTU/hr. 33. The burner assembly of claim 25, wherein: the burner assembly has a burner output capacity of at least about 3.0 MM BTU/hr. 34. The burner assembly of claim 25, wherein: the foraminous outer wall portions comprise a flexible ceramic fabric. 35. The burner assembly of claim 25, wherein: the at least one interior wall comprises at least two interior walls dividing the interior into at least three interior zones, said first and second zones being two of the at least three interior zones.
