In the power cell, first and second catalyst is in gaseous communication with respective first flow path and second flow path and in ionic communication with respective first and second sides of the membrane. Furthermore, a first electrode is electrically coupled to the first catalyst on the first side of the membrane, and a second electrode is electrically coupled to the second catalyst on the second side of the membrane. In another embodiment, the power cell further includes a substrate on which the membrane is coupled.

A power cell comprising: (a) a membrane formed on a semiconductor wafer, with a first side and a second side, the membrane having a three-dimensional geometric structure encompassing a volume of a first flow path;(b) a cover coupled to the membrane to separate the first flow path for fuel or oxidant from a second flow path for oxidant or fuel, respectively, at the membrane;(c) first and second catalyst in gaseous communication with respective first flow path and second flow path and in ionic communication with respective first and second sides of the membrane; and(d) a first electrode electrically coupled to the first catalyst on the first side of the membrane and a second electrode electrically coupled to the second catalyst on the second side of the membrane. 2. The power cell of claim 1 wherein at least a portion of at least one of the flow paths is perpendicular to the substrate. 3. The power cell of claim 1 wherein at least a portion of the first flow path is perpendicular to at least a portion of the second flow path. 4. The power cell of claim 1 wherein at least a portion of the first flow path is parallel to at least a portion of the second flow path. 5. The power cell of claim 1 wherein at least one end of the volume is open-ended. 6. The power cell of claim 1 wherein the membrane is a proton exchange membrane. 7. The power cell of claim 1 wherein the geometric structure is a cylindrically shaped structure in a plan view. 8. The power cell of claim 1 wherein the geometric structure is a non-cylindrically shaped structure in a plan view to increase reactive surface area for the catalyst on the membrane relative to a cylindrically shaped structure in a plan view. 9. The power cell of claim 1 wherein the geometric structure has a curvilinear cross-sectional plan view. 10. The power cell of claim 1 wherein the geometric structure has a castellated cross-sectional plan view segment. 11. The power cell of claim 1 wherein the geometric structure defines fins for at least a given length of the geometric structure. 12. The power cell of claim 1 wherein the geometric structure has a serpentine cross sectional plan view segment. 13. The power cell of claim 1 wherein the geometric structure has a rectangular cross sectional plan view. 14. The power cell of claim 1 wherein the first and second catalyst is in at least a portion of the respective first and second sides of the membrane, the first and second catalyst electrically isolated by at least a portion of the membrane. 15. The power cell of claim 1 wherein the cover is made of a different material from that of the membrane. 16. The power cell of claim 1 wherein the cover is made from a gas impermeable material. 17. The power cell of claim 1 wherein the cover is a membrane including first and second sides with catalyst in ionic communication with the membrane and in electrical communication with the electrodes to make the cover an active cover. 18. The power cell of claim 1 further comprising a circuit element in communication with the power cell via at least one of the electrodes to enable and disable electron flow to or from the first or second catalyst. 19. The power cell of claim 1 wherein fuel and oxidant are introduced to the first and second catalyst via the first flow path and second flow path, respectively. 20. The power cell of claim 1 wherein oxidant and fuel are introduced to the first and second catalyst via the first flow path and second flow path, respectively. 21. The power cell of claim 1 wherein the first and second catalyst include a same material. 22. The power cell of claim 1 wherein the first and second catalyst include a different material. 23. The power cell of claim 1 wherein the first or second flow path leads to an outlet path to remove byproduct from the first or second flow path produced by a reaction between fuel, oxidant, and the first and second catalyst. 24. The power cell of claim 1 wherein the power cell is an autonomous structure. 25. The power cell of claim 1 being operative in the presence of gaseous fuel and gaseous oxidant. 26. The power cell of claim 1, wherein encompassing the first flow path includes providing a boundary of the first flow path. 27. The power cell of claim 1, wherein the cover is positioned in a perpendicular direction relative to the first flow path. 28. The power cell of claim 1, wherein the cover dead-ends the first flow path. 29. The power cell of claim 1, wherein the cover covers the second flow path. 30. A power cell comprising: (a) a membrane formed on a substrate, with a first side and a second side, the membrane having a three-dimensional geometric structure encompassing a volume of a first flow path;(b) a cover coupled to the membrane to separate the first flow path for fuel or oxidant from a second flow path for oxidant or fuel, respectively, at the membrane;(c) first and second catalyst in gaseous communication with respective first flow path and second flow path and in ionic communication with respective first and second sides of the membrane; and(d) a first electrode electrically coupled to the first catalyst on the first side of the membrane and a second electrode electrically coupled to the second catalyst on the second side of the membrane; wherein the geometric structure has a castellated cross-sectional plan view segment. 31. A power cell comprising: (a) a membrane formed on a substrate, with a first side and a second side, the membrane having a three-dimensional geometric structure encompassing a volume of a first flow path;(b) a cover coupled to the membrane to separate the first flow path for fuel or oxidant from a second flow path for oxidant or fuel, respectively, at the membrane;(c) first and second catalyst in gaseous communication with respective first flow path and second flow path and in ionic communication with respective first and second sides of the membrane; and(d) a first electrode electrically coupled to the first catalyst on the first side of the membrane and a second electrode electrically coupled to the second catalyst on the second side of the membrane; wherein the geometric structure defines fins for at least a given length of the geometric structure.
