A catheter connector system for a subcutaneously placed catheter and method of attaching a catheter to extracorporeal medical equipment. The catheter connector system and method enables proximal trimming of the placed catheter and facilitates precise positioning of both distal and proximal ends of a catheter. The method includes sliding a boot and dilator combination over a portion of a catheter extending from a venipuncture site until a distal end of the boot is positioned in the venipuncture site, removing the dilator from the boot, and trimming a portion of the catheter extending from a proximal end of the boot. A bifurcation assembly may be attached to the proximal end of the boot following trimming of the catheter.

A method of attaching a catheter to extracorporeal medical equipment, following placement of a catheter in the body of a patient through a venipuncture site, comprising: providing a boot including a tapered outer wall having a diameter that decreases toward a distal end thereof and enclosing a lo
1. A method of attaching a catheter to extracorporeal medical equipment, following placement of a catheter in the body of a patient through a venipuncture site, comprising: providing a boot including a tapered outer wall having a diameter that decreases toward a distal end thereof and enclosing a longitudinally extending lumen;inserting a shaft of a dilator through the boot lumen;sliding the boot and dilator combination over a portion of a catheter extending from the venipuncture site until a distal end of the boot is positioned in the venipuncture site;removing the dilator from the boot;trimming a portion of the catheter extending from a proximal end of the boot; andattaching a bifurcation assembly to the proximal end of the boot. 2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the providing step includes providing a boot with a longitudinally extending lumen sized to prevent axial movement of the catheter. 3. The method according to claim 2, wherein the inserting step includes expanding the boot lumen with the dilator shaft. 4. The method according to claim 1, wherein the attaching step includes inserting a stem of the bifurcation assembly into a lumen of the catheter, the stem in fluid communication with an extension leg of the bifurcation assembly. 5. The method according to claim 4, wherein the bifurcation assembly includes at least one obturator having a rounded tip positioned through the extension leg and the stem, the attaching step including inserting the obturator tip into the catheter lumen, and thereafter removing the obturator from the bifurcation assembly. 6. The method according to claim 4, wherein the boot includes a proximal coupling section and the bifurcation assembly includes a distal coupling section at least partially surrounding the stem, the attaching step including mating the boot coupling section and the bifurcation coupling section. 7. The method according to claim 6, wherein the mating is confirmed by an audible and tactile indication. 8. The method according to claim 6, wherein the attaching step includes inserting the boot coupling section into the bifurcation coupling section. 9. The method according to claim 6, wherein the attaching step includes inserting the bifurcation coupling section into the boot coupling section. 10. The method according to claim 1, wherein the boot includes a first connector member and the bifurcation assembly includes a second connector member, the attaching step including moving the first connector member adjacent to the second connector member and locking a clamp around the first and second connector members. 11. The method according to claim 10, wherein the clamp includes interlocking halves connected by a hinge, wherein the clamping includes closing the halves around the first and second connector members. 12. The method according to claim 11, wherein the interlocking halves include compression ring portions, wherein the clamping applies a compressive force to the first and second connector members and the catheter. 13. The method according to claim 10, wherein the clamp includes suture wings extending laterally in opposite directions, further comprising the step of affixing the suture wings to a patient's skin. 14. The method according to claim 1, wherein the boot includes suture wings extending laterally in opposite directions from the boot outer wall, further comprising the step of affixing the suture wings to a patient's skin. 15. The method according to claim 1, wherein the attaching step includes inserting a first stem of the bifurcation assembly into a first lumen of the catheter and a second stem of the bifurcation assembly into a second lumen of the catheter, the first and second stems in respective fluid communication with a first extension leg and a second extension leg of the bifurcation assembly. 16. The method according to claim 15, wherein the first and second stems and first and second lumens of the catheter have a generally trapezoidal cross-sectional shape, the attaching step including aligning the first and second stems with the first and second lumens prior to insertion thereof.
