A mixing bag for use in bioprocessing in which a fluid is received and agitated using an internal fluid-agitating element driven by an external motive device is disclosed. The bag may include an integral sparger and sensor receiver. Related methods are also disclosed.

The apparatus of claim 1, further including a tube for supporting the sensor, the tube being adapted for positioning in the receiver. 3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the tube is positioned in contact with the fluid. 4. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the tube is adapted for positioning in the receiver in contact with the fluid when present. 5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein a fluid-impervious seal connects the receiver to the vessel. 6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the receiver includes a portion adapted for connecting with a tube. 7. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the portion comprises a barb arranged on a tubular portion of the receiver. 8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the receiver includes a tubular portion external to the vessel. 9. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the tubular portion includes a passage for receiving the sensor element. 10. An apparatus, comprising: a flexible vessel having an interior space bounded by a surface, the flexible vessel being selectively movable between an extended position wherein a first portion and an opposing second portion are spaced apart and a collapsed position wherein the first portion and the opposing second portion are moved closer together relative to the extended position;a connector secured to the second portion of the flexible vessel, the connector having an opening extending therethrough that communicates with the interior space of the flexible vessel;an elongated probe having a first end and an opposing second end, the second end of the probe being positioned within the interior space of the flexible vessel, the second end of the probe being configured to pass through the opening of the connector; anda sealing element for sealing the opening of the connector. 11. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the vessel comprises a bag. 12. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the sealing element comprises a flexible plastic material. 13. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the probe carries a sensor element. 14. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the connector is connected to the flexible vessel. 15. The apparatus of claim 10, further including an adhesive for securing the sealing element to the connector. 16. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the second end of the probe is positioned within the interior space. 17. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the interior space is sealed by the probe. 18. An apparatus comprising: a flexible vessel including a passage, said vessel having an interior surface extending between a first end and an opposing second end, the flexible vessel being selectively movable between an extended position wherein the first end and the opposing second end are spaced apart and a collapsed position wherein the first end and the opposing second end are moved closer together relative to the extended position;a connector secured to the second end of the flexible vessel, the connector having an opening extending therethrough that communicates with an interior compartment of the flexible vessel, andan elongated tube having a first end and an opposing second end, the second end of the tube being positioned within the interior compartment of the flexible vessel, the second end of the tube being configured to pass through the opening of the connector, said tube carrying at least one sensor element. 19. The apparatus of claim 18, further including a flexible plastic material for forming a seal between the tube and the connector. 20. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein the vessel comprises a bag. 21. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the sensor comprises a cable isolated from the fluid when present in the interior compartment. 22. The apparatus of claim 1, further including a sensor element in the interior compartment of the flexible vessel and adapted to fluoresce in order for the sensor to sense the characteristic of the fluid, and wherein the receiver includes a tubular portion external to the vessel for receiving the sensor. 23. The apparatus of claim 1, further including a sensor element, wherein the sensor directs light onto the sensor element without the light passing through the fluid. 24. The apparatus of claim 23, wherein the tubular portion includes a closed end having the sensor element adjacent to one side of the closed end and the sensor adjacent to the other side of the closed end. 25. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the second end of the tube is closed, and further including an optical cable juxtaposed with the second, closed end of the tube. 26. The apparatus of claim 25, wherein the vessel is adapted for receiving a fluid, and the optical cable is isolated from the fluid. 27. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the at least one sensor element is adapted for sensing a fluid characteristic selected from the group consisting of pH, dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide, and temperature. 28. An apparatus for receiving a fluid and sensing a characteristic thereof in connection with a sensor element, comprising: a vessel having a flexible sidewall at least partially defining an interior compartment, a portion of the vessel formed by the flexible sidewall having no predetermined shape and capable of assuming a particular shape based on the presence of the fluid in the interior compartment;a sensor for sensing the characteristic of the fluid, said sensor being arranged so as to not contact the fluid when present in the interior compartment; anda receiver connected to the vessel for at least partially receiving the sensor. 29. The apparatus of claim 28, wherein the receiver comprises a closed end arranged for contacting the fluid. 30. The apparatus of claim 29, further including a sensor element is adjacent to one side of the closed end, and wherein the sensor is adjacent to the other side of the closed end. 31. The apparatus of claim 28, wherein a window is provided in the receiver for transmitting light from the sensor to the sensor element. 32. An apparatus for receiving a fluid and sensing a characteristic thereof using a sensor, comprising: a vessel having a flexible sidewall at least partially defining an interior compartment, a portion of the vessel formed by the flexible sidewall having no predetermined shape and capable of assuming a particular shape based on the presence of the fluid in the interior compartment;a sensor element for facilitating the sensing of the characteristic of the fluid by the sensor;a receiver connected to the vessel for receiving the sensor element; anda tube for supporting the sensor element, the tube being adapted for positioning in the receiver and for contacting the fluid when present. 33. An apparatus for receiving a fluid and sensing a characteristic thereof using a sensor, comprising: a vessel having a flexible sidewall at least partially defining an interior compartment, a portion of the vessel formed by the flexible sidewall having no predetermined shape and capable of assuming a particular shape based on the presence of the fluid in the interior compartment;a sensor element for facilitating the sensing of the characteristic of the fluid by the sensor; anda receiver connected to the vessel for receiving a tube supporting the sensor element, wherein the receiver includes a barb arranged on a tubular portion of the receiver.
