The present invention generally provides methods and devices for removing fluid from a surgical instrument. Surgical access devices and seal systems are generally provided having one or more valves or seal assemblies to create a closed system between the outside environment and the environment in which the surgical access device is being inserted. The devices of systems can also include a fluid remover in the form of a sorbent element, a scraper element, a wicking element, or any combination thereof that is configured to remove fluid from a working channel of the device or system and/or from a surgical instrument inserted therethrough.

1. A fluid remover for use in a surgical access device, comprising: a sorbent member having opposed proximal and distal surfaces and opposed inner and outer sidewalls extending between the proximal and distal surfaces such that the sorbent member has a polygonal cross-sectional shape, the proximal surface being substantially planar, the inner sidewall defining a central opening extending through the sorbent member, and the sorbent member including a gap formed therein such that the sorbent is C-shaped with terminal ends that substantially face each other, wherein the sorbent member is formed from a plurality of fibers that are configured to sorb fluid, wherein the plurality of fibers are oriented longitudinally relative to a longitudinal axis of the central opening. 2. The fluid remover of claim 1, wherein the inner sidewall includes a plurality of grooves formed therein and extending parallel to a longitudinal axis of the central opening. 3. The fluid remover of claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the sorbent member is hydrophilic. 4. The fluid remover of claim 1, wherein the terminal ends are substantially planar. 5. The fluid remover of claim 1, wherein the outer sidewall of the sorbent member is tapered between the proximal surface and the distal surface. 6. The fluid remover of claim 5, wherein the outer sidewall defines a radius extending from a center point of the sorbent member and wherein the radius of the outer sidewall adjacent to the proximal surface is larger than the radius of the outer sidewall adjacent to the distal surface. 7. The fluid remover of claim 1, wherein the polygonal cross-sectional shape of the sorbent member is substantially triangular. 8. The fluid remover of claim 1, wherein an arc length of the sorbent member is more than twice an arc length extending between the terminal ends. 9. A fluid remover for use in a surgical access device, comprising: a sorbent member formed from a plurality of fibers that are configured to sorb fluid, the sorbent member having opposed proximal and distal surfaces and opposed inner and outer sidewalls extending between the proximal and distal surfaces, the proximal surface being substantially planar, the inner sidewall defining a central opening extending through the sorbent member, and the sorbent member having an arc length that comprises a major arc, wherein the outer sidewall of the sorbent member is tapered between the proximal surface and the distal surface. 10. The fluid remover of claim 9, wherein the sorbent member further comprises a gap formed between terminal ends of the major arc. 11. The fluid remover of claim 10, wherein the arc length is more than twice an arc length of the gap. 12. The fluid remover of claim 9, wherein the inner sidewall includes a plurality of grooves formed therein and extending parallel to a longitudinal axis of the central opening. 13. The fluid remover of claim 9, wherein the plurality of fibers are oriented longitudinally relative to a longitudinal axis of the central opening. 14. The fluid remover of claim 9, wherein at least a portion of the sorbent member is hydrophilic. 15. The fluid remover of claim 9, wherein the outer sidewall defines a radius extending from a center point of the sorbent member, and wherein the radius of the outer sidewall adjacent to the proximal surface is larger than the radius of the outer sidewall adjacent to the distal surface. 16. The fluid remover of claim 9, wherein the sorbent member comprises first and second substantially planer terminal end surfaces having the gap therebetween. 17. The fluid remover of claim 16, wherein the first and second terminal end surfaces are substantially facing one another. 18. A fluid remover for use in a surgical access device, comprising: a sorbent member having opposed proximal and distal surfaces and opposed inner and outer sidewalls extending between the proximal and distal surfaces such that the sorbent member has a polygonal cross-sectional shape, the proximal surface being substantially planar, the inner sidewall defining a central opening extending through the sorbent member, and the sorbent member including a gap formed therein such that the sorbent is C-shaped with terminal ends that substantially face each other, wherein the sorbent member is formed from a plurality of fibers that are configured to sorb fluid, wherein the sorbent member has a substantially triangular cross-sectional shape.
