Systems and methods for extracting recoverable materials from source materials are provided. According to one embodiment, a plasma furnace includes an open-faced tray, a pair of arc rods, Faraday coils and a smooth interior surface. The open-faced tray carries tar sands from one end of the plasma furnace to another. The arc rods are disposed above the open-faced tray and are operable to generate a plasma energy field for vaporizing bitumen contained within the tar sands. The Faraday coils are positioned underneath the open-faced tray to create a magnetic field proximate to the tar sands and cause the plasma energy field to penetrate and heat the tar sands to a temperature sufficient to release a bond between the bitumen and the tar sands by focusing and drawing the plasma energy field through the tar sands. Vaporized bitumen condenses on the smooth interior surface from which it is collected.

A plasma furnace comprising: an open-faced tray to support and carry tar sands from an entry point at one end of the plasma furnace to an exit point at another end of the plasma furnace;at least one pair of arc rods disposed between the entry point and the exit point and above the open-faced tray

A plasma furnace comprising: an open-faced tray to support and carry tar sands from an entry point at one end of the plasma furnace to an exit point at another end of the plasma furnace;at least one pair of arc rods disposed between the entry point and the exit point and above the open-faced tray, the at least one pair of arc rods is operable to generate a plasma energy field for use in connection with vaporizing bitumen contained within the tar sands;one or more Faraday coils positioned underneath the open-faced tray to create a magnetic field proximate to the tar sands and cause the plasma energy field to penetrate the tar sands and heat the tar sands to a temperature sufficient to release a bond between the bitumen and the tar sands by focusing and drawing the plasma energy field through the tar sands; anda smooth interior surface on which the vaporized bitumen condenses and from which the condensed bitumen is collected. 2. The plasma furnace of claim 1, wherein the open-faced tray is tilted down at an angle between approximately 3 to 10 degrees to allow gravity to aid in moving the tar sands from the entry point to the exit point. 3. The plasma furnace of claim 1, further comprising a vacuum pump to create a condition within the plasma furnace in which a gaseous pressure within the plasma furnace is less than an atmospheric pressure outside of the plasma furnace. 4. The plasma furnace of claim 1, further comprising a substantially cylindrical cavity formed within an interior portion of the plasma furnace. 5. The plasma furnace of claim 4, further comprising a doughnut-shaped screw-like structure extending along a long-axis of the substantially cylindrical cavity, the doughnut-shaped screw-like structure having outer edges that engage the smooth interior surface and serve to scrape and collect the condensed bitumen from the smooth interior surface as the doughnut-shaped screw-like structure is rotated. 6. The plasma furnace of claim 4, further comprising a doughnut-shaped piston which moves back and forth along a long-axis of the substantially cylindrical cavity pushing/scraping the condensed bitumen from the smooth interior surface. 7. A plasma furnace comprising: a receiving means for carrying tar sands to be processed;a means for generating a plasma energy field within the plasma furnace;a plasma generation means for creating a plasma energy field to vaporize bitumen contained within the tar sands;a magnetic field generation means for creating a magnetic field proximate to the tar sands and causing the plasma energy field to penetrate the tar sands and heat the tar sands to a temperature sufficient to release a bond between the bitumen and the tar sands by focusing and drawing the plasma energy field through the tar sands; anda means for capturing the vaporized bitumen. 8. The plasma furnace of claim 7, wherein the magnetic field generation means comprises a Faraday coil. 9. The plasma furnace of claim 7, further comprising: a vacuum generation means for creating a condition within the plasma furnace in which a gaseous pressure within the plasma furnace is less than an atmospheric pressure outside of the plasma furnace; andwherein the means for capturing comprises a vacuum valve, located at a top portion of the plasma furnace, configured to extract the vaporized bitumen. 10. The plasma furnace of claim 7, wherein the receiving means comprises a crucible capable of withstanding heat and process operating conditions within the plasma furnace and having a volume of approximately between 100 to 1000 cubic feet. 11. The plasma furnace of claim 7, further comprising a means for pre-heating and extruding the tar sands before introducing the tar sands into the plasma furnace and wherein the receiving means comprises an open-faced tray extending along a long-axis of the plasma furnace and tilted down by an angle of approximately 3 to 10 degrees thereby allowing gravity to aid in moving pre-heated and extruded tar sands through the plasma furnace. 12. The plasma furnace of claim 11, further comprising a substantially cylindrical cavity formed within the plasma furnace, the substantially cylindrical cavity having a smooth inner surface upon which the vaporized bitumen condenses. 13. The plasma furnace of claim 12, wherein the means for capturing the vaporized bitumen comprises a doughnut-shaped screw-like structure extending along the long-axis of the plasma furnace, the doughnut-shaped screw-like structure having outer edges that engage the smooth inner surface and serve to scrape and collect the condensed bitumen from the smooth inner surface as the doughnut-shaped screw-like structure is rotated. 14. The plasma furnace of claim 13, wherein the means for capturing the vaporized bitumen comprises a doughnut-shaped piston that moves back and forth along the long-axis of the plasma furnace pushing/scraping the condensed bitumen from the smooth inner surface.
