Adsorbents and methods for the adsorptive separation of para-xylene from a mixture containing at least one other C8 aromatic hydrocarbon (e.g., a mixture of ortho-xylene, meta-xylene, para-xylene, and ethylbenzene) are described. Suitable adsorbents comprise zeolite X having an average crystallite size of less than 1.8 microns. The adsorbents provide improved mass transfer, which is especially advantageous for improving productivity in low temperature, low cycle time adsorptive separation operations in a simulated moving bed mode.

1. A simulated moving bed process for separating para-xylene from a mixture comprising at least one other C8 alkylaromatic hydrocarbon, the process comprising contacting, under adsorption conditions, the mixture with an adsorbent comprising zeolite X having an average crystallite size of between 1.4 and less than 1.8microns to adsorb para-xylene, present in an adsorbed phase, in preference to the at least one other C8 alkylaromatic hydrocarbon present in a non-adsorbed phase; flushing the non-adsorbed phase from contact with the adsorbent to produce a raffinate stream comprising the at least one other C8 alkylaromatic hydrocarbon; and desorbing para-xylene in the adsorbed phase from the adsorbent to produce an extract stream comprising para-xylene; wherein the process has a cycle time from about 18 minutes to about 26 minutes, and recovering at least about 95% of the para-xylene from the mixture. 2. The process of claim 1, wherein the adsorption conditions include an adsorption temperature of less than about 175° C. (350° F.). 3. The process of claim 2, wherein the adsorption conditions include an adsorption temperature from about 150° C. (300° F.) to about 175° C. (350° F.). 4. The process of claim 1, wherein the adsorption conditions include an adsorption pressure from about 1 barg (15 psig) to about 40 barg (580 psig). 5. The process of claim 1, wherein the adsorbent comprises a binder comprising a material selected from the group consisting of clay, alumina, silica, zirconia, and mixtures thereof. 6. The process of claim 5, wherein the binder is present in an amount from about 10% to about 40% by weight, relative to the adsorbent. 7. The process of claim 1, wherein the adsorbent has a water content corresponding to a Loss on Ignition from about 4% to about 7% by weight. 8. The process of claim 1, wherein the zeolite X has at least 95% of its ion-exchangeable sites exchanged with barium or a combination of barium and potassium. 9. The process of claim 1, wherein the mixture comprises ortho-xylene, meta-xylene, para-xylene, and ethylbenzene. 10. The process of claim 9, wherein contacting the mixture with the adsorbent effects adsorption of para-xylene, present in the adsorbed phase, in preference to ortho-xylene, meta-xylene, and ethylbenzene, present in the non-adsorbed phase. 11. The process of claim 10, wherein para-xylene in the adsorbed phase is desorbed into the extract stream comprising a desorbent and the non-adsorbed phase is flushed into the raffinate stream comprising the desorbent. 12. The process of claim 11, wherein the desorbent comprises an aromatic ring-containing compound selected from the group consisting of toluene, benzene, indan, para-diethylbenzene, 1,4-diisopropylbenzene, and mixtures thereof. 13. A process for separating para-xylene from a mixture comprising ortho-xylene, meta-xylene, para-xylene, and ethylbenzene, wherein the process is performed in a simulated moving bed mode and comprises: charging a feed stream comprising the mixture and a desorbent stream into one or more vessels comprising an adsorbent comprising zeolite X having an average crystallite size of between 1.4 and less than 1.8 microns to adsorb para-xylene, present in an adsorbed phase, in preference to ortho-xylene, meta-xylene, and ethylbenzene present in a non-adsorbed phase, desorbing para-xylene in the adsorbed phase into an extract stream comprising the desorbent, flushing the non-adsorbed phase into a raffinate stream comprising the desorbent, removing the extract stream and the raffinate stream from the bed of the adsorbent, andrecovering at least about 95% of the para-xylene from the feed stream, wherein the process has a cycle time from about 18 minutes to about 26 minutes and is performed at a temperature of less than about 175° C. (350° F.). 14. The process of claim 13, wherein the zeolite X has a SiO2/Al2O3 framework molar ratio from about 2.0 to about 3.0. 15. The process of claim 13, wherein water is added to either the feed stream or the desorbent stream to obtain a water content in the extract or raffinate stream from about 20 ppm by weight to about 120 ppm by weight.
