Low weight and non-square carpet tile suitable for use in mass transit vehicles, particularly passenger aircraft. The carpet tile preferably weighs less than about 82 ounces per square yard. The carpet tile of this invention may have a carpet pile and at least one backing layer. The backing layer may use a low weight filler material. The carpet tiles satisfy transportation industry standards for flame, smoke and toxicity. Tiles may be sized during manufacture and installed in configurations that minimize the number of tile sizes needed and minimize the need for cutting tiles during installation. The patterns used for such tiles may be orthogonally ambiguous or otherwise suitable for “random” installation. In other embodiments, a passenger aircraft cabin includes a floor having rectangular carpet tiles installed thereon, and the carpeting can be installed in the aircraft without removing seats from the aircraft.

A method for installing carpet on a floor of a mass transit vehicle wherein the mass transit vehicle comprises elongated passenger seat mounting tracks fastened to the floor generally parallel to each other, wherein a first pair of adjacent seat mounting tracks are separated by a first distance and wherein a second pair of adjacent seat mounting tracks are separated by a second distance different from the first distance, the method comprising: providing a plurality of rectangular carpet tiles each comprising a first dimension substantially equal to the first distance and a second dimension substantially equal to the second distance; andorienting the plurality of carpet tiles on the floor of the mass transit vehicle with at least one of the plurality of carpet tiles between the first pair of adjacent seat mounting tracks so that the first dimension of the at least one carpet tile spans the first distance between the first pair of adjacent seat mounting tracks. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein orienting the plurality of carpet tiles on the floor of the mass transit vehicle further comprises orienting at least one of the plurality of carpet tiles between the second pair of adjacent seat mounting tracks so that the second dimension of the at least one carpet tile spans the second distance between the second pair of adjacent seat mounting tracks. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the mass transit vehicle has seats attached to the elongated passenger seat mounting tracks and wherein orienting the plurality of carpet tiles on the floor of the mass transit vehicle comprises orienting the plurality of carpet tiles on the floor of the mass transit vehicle without removing the seats from the vehicle. 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of rectangular carpet tiles further comprises orthogonally ambiguous tile faces. 5. The method of claim 4, wherein orienting the plurality of carpet tiles on the floor of the mass transit vehicle comprises randomly orienting at least some of the plurality of carpet tiles on the floor. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein a third pair of adjacent seat mounting tracks are separated by a third distance different from each of the first and second distances and wherein a fourth pair of adjacent seat mounting tracks are separated by a fourth distance different from the first, second and third distances, the method further comprising: providing a plurality of second rectangular carpet tiles each comprising a first dimension substantially equal to the third distance and a second dimension substantially equal to the fourth distance; andorienting the plurality of second rectangular carpet tiles on the floor of the mass transit vehicle with at least one of the plurality of second carpet tiles between the third pair of adjacent seat mounting tracks so that the first dimension of the at least one second rectangular carpet tile spans the third distance between the third pair of adjacent seat mounting tracks. 7. The method of claim 6, wherein orienting the plurality of second rectangular carpet tiles on the floor of the mass transit vehicle further comprises orienting at least one of the plurality of second carpet tiles between the fourth pair of adjacent seat mounting tracks so that the second dimension of the at least one second rectangular carpet tile spans the fourth distance between the fourth pair of adjacent seat mounting tracks. 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the mass transit vehicle comprises an aircraft. 9. The method of claim 1, further comprising adhering the plurality of carpet tiles directly to the floor. 10. The method of claim 1, further comprising fastening at least two of the plurality of carpet tiles to one other but not directly to the floor. 11. The method of claim 1, wherein at least some of the plurality of carpet tiles further comprise: a. yarns tufted into a tufting primary layer;b. a secondary backing layer located under the tufting primary layer, wherein the secondary backing layer comprises a filler; andc. a flame retardant. 12. The method of claim 11, wherein the at least some of the plurality of carpet tiles weigh less than about 82 ounces per square yard. 13. The method of claim 12, wherein the at least some of the plurality of carpet tiles weigh less than about 56 ounces per square yard. 14. The method of claim 11, wherein the at least some of the plurality of carpet tiles further comprise a flame retardant layer below the tufting primary layer. 15. The method of claim 14, wherein the flame retardant layer comprises a latex material. 16. The method of claim 11, wherein the yarns weigh approximately 16 ounces per square yard or less. 17. The method of claim 16, wherein the yarns weigh approximately 14 ounces per square yard or less. 18. The method of claim 11, wherein at least some of the yarns comprise a conductive material that dissipates static electricity. 19. The method of claim 11, wherein the tufting primary layer comprises the flame retardant. 20. The method of claim 11, wherein the secondary backing layer comprises the flame retardant. 21. The method of claim 11, wherein the filler comprises a filler selected from the group consisting of glass spheres, fumed silica, a silica-based foam, and combinations thereof. 22. The method of claim 11, wherein the filler comprises hollow microspheres. 23. The method of claim 22, wherein the hollow microspheres comprise glass. 24. The method of claim 23, wherein the hollow microspheres are flame resistant. 25. The method of claim 11, wherein the secondary backing layer further comprises a smoke suppressant. 26. The method of claim 11, wherein the secondary backing layer further comprises a flame resistant reinforcing layer. 27. The method of claim 11, wherein the secondary backing layer further comprises a polymeric material. 28. The method of claim 27, wherein the polymeric material comprises polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, or polyethylene terephthalate. 29. The method of claim 11, wherein the secondary backing layer further comprises a plasticizer. 30. The method of claim 29, wherein the plasticizer is selected from the group consisting of di-iso-nonyl phthalate, tri-cresyl phosphate, triphenyl phosphate isopropylated, or a castor bean-based plasticizer. 31. The method of claim 30, wherein the plasticizer comprises triphenyl phosphate isopropylated. 32. The method of claim 29, wherein the plasticizer comprises the flame retardant. 33. The method of claim 11, wherein the at least some of the plurality of carpet tiles comply with one or more of the following standards for flame, smoke or toxicity: FAR 25.853; DSS 7239; DSS 7238; D6-51377 and DSS 7230. 34. The method of claim 11, wherein the at least some of the plurality of carpet tiles have a dimensional stability of plus or minus 0.2% or less as determined by ISO 2551. 35. The method of claim 11, wherein the at least some of the plurality of carpet tiles are hardback carpet tiles. 36. The method of claim 1, wherein at least some of the plurality of carpet tiles further comprise: a. yarns tufted into a tufting primary layer;b. a precoat layer below the tufting primary layer; andc. a secondary backing layer, wherein the secondary backing layer comprises: i. a polymeric material;ii. a plasticizer comprising a flame retardant; andiii. a filler, wherein the at least some of the plurality of carpet tiles are hardback carpet tiles and have a weight less than 82 ounces per square yard. 37. The method of claim 1, wherein at least some of the plurality of carpet tiles further comprise: a. yarns tufted into a tufting primary layer;b. a precoat layer below the tufting primary layer; andc. a secondary backing layer located below the precoat layer, wherein the secondary backing layer comprises a flame retardant and a filler, wherein the at least some of the plurality of carpet tiles have a weight less than 82 ounces per square yard and comply with one or more of the following standards for flame, smoke or toxicity: FAR 25.853; BSS 7239; BSS 7238; D6-51377 and BSS 7230. 38. The method of claim 37, wherein the at least some of the plurality of carpet tiles are hardback carpet tiles.
