A composite package having a folded paperboard card and two plastic components shaped to interfit with one another when the package is closed. The plastic components define a space for containing one or more articles. The folded paperboard card may be a dual-panel card with two panels joined to one another along a fold line or other hinge. Each paperboard panel may define an opening to seat a plastic component. The paperboard is configured to bring the two plastic components into registration when the panels are folded together along the hinge. The plastic components may be configured to releasably interlock with one another when the package is closed. One of the two plastic components may include a shoulder that is configured to be snap-fitted or otherwise frictionally into the other plastic component. The opening may include a seat shaped to closely receive the shoulder and provide a stop against which the shoulder abuts when the package is closed.

A composite package for containing articles comprising: a paperboard portion having a first panel and a second panel, said first panel joined to said second panel along a hinge, said first panel defining an opening;a first plastic component secured with and carried by said first panel, said first plastic component including a first flange secured to said first panel;a second plastic component secured with and carried by said second panel, said second plastic component including a second flange secured to said second panel, said second plastic component being configured to selectively interlock with said first plastic component by frictional interfit, said first plastic component and said second plastic component shaped to cooperatively define an article containing space when interfitted with one another, said first and second plastic components being integrally joined to each other along a portion of said first flange and a portion of said second flange; andwherein said paperboard portion is movable about said hinge between a closed position in which said first and second panels are adjacent one another and said first plastic component releasably interlocks with said second plastic component to cooperatively define said article containing space, and an open position in which said first and second panels are moved away from one another and said first plastic component and said second plastic component are separated to provide access to an interior of said article containing space, wherein said paperboard portion is repeatedly movable between said closed position and said open position without damaging the package,wherein said first and second flanges each have an inside surface facing toward each other when said paperboard portion is in said closed position, and an outside surface facing away from each other when said paperboard portion is in said closed position, wherein said first panel is positioned adjacent said outside surface of said first flange and said second panel is positioned adjacent said outside surface of said second flange,wherein said first panel remains secured to said first plastic component and said second panel remains secured to said second plastic component as said paperboard panel repeatedly moves between said closed and said open positions, and said first and second plastic components engage one another when said hinge of said paperboard orients said first and second panels in said closed position and said first and second plastic components are separated when said hinge of said paperboard orients said first and second panels in said open position. 2. The package of claim 1 wherein said paperboard portion is a single continuous piece of paperboard and said hinge is further defined as a fold line in said paperboard portion. 3. The package of claim 1 wherein said first flange includes a first periphery and said second flange includes a second periphery, said first and second plastic components being integrally joined to each other along a portion of said first periphery and a portion of said second periphery. 4. The package of claim 3 wherein said first plastic component includes a first pocket, said first flange extending around at least a portion of a periphery of said first pocket, said first flange secured to said first panel. 5. The package of claim 4 wherein said first panel includes an inner surface and an outer surface, said first flange secured to said inner surface, said first pocket extending from said first flange through said first opening. 6. The package of claim 5 wherein said second plastic component includes a second pocket, said second flange extending around at least a portion of a periphery of said second pocket, said second flange secured to said second panel. 7. The package of claim 6 wherein said second panel includes an inner surface and an outer surface, said second flange secured to said inner surface of said second panel, said second pocket extending from said second flange through an opening in said second panel. 8. The package of claim 1 wherein at least one of said first plastic component and said second plastic component includes a shoulder and the other of said first plastic component and said second plastic component includes a seat, said seat configured to frictionally receive said shoulder when said paperboard portion is in said closed position. 9. The package of claim 8 wherein said seat includes a sidewall and a base, said shoulder and seat configured so that said shoulder abuts said base and said sidewall when said first plastic component and said second plastic component are interfitted. 10. A composite package comprising: a first panel defining a first opening;a second panel joined to said first panel by a hinge and rotatable with respect to said first panel about said hinge;a first plastic component with a first pocket and a first flange, said first flange joined to said first panel;a second plastic component with a second flange joined to said second panel, said first and second plastic components being integrally joined to each other along a portion of said first flange and a portion of said second flange; andwherein said first panel and second panel can be selectively moved about said hinge between a closed position in which said first panel and said second panel are adjacent to one another and a portion of said first plastic component releasably interlocks with a portion of said second plastic component by frictional interfit to cooperatively define an interior space and an open position in which said first panel is hinged away from said second panel and said first plastic component is hinged away from said second plastic component to provide access to said interior space, wherein said first and second panels can be repeatedly moved between said closed position and said open position without damaging the package,wherein said first and second flanges each have an inside surface facing toward each other when said first and second panels are in said closed position, and an outside surface facing away from each other when said first and second panels are in said closed position, wherein said first panel is positioned adjacent said outside surface of said first flange and said second panel is positioned adjacent said outside surface of said second flange,wherein said first panel remains joined to said first flange and said second panel remains joined to said second flange as said paperboard panel repeatedly moves between said closed and said open positions, and said first and second plastic components engage one another when said hinge of said paperboard orients said first and second panels in said closed position and said first and second plastic components are separated when said hinge of said paperboard orients said first and second panels in said open position. 11. The package of claim 10 wherein said first plastic component is joined to said second plastic component about a fold line, said fold line being nested in said hinge joining said first and second panels. 12. The package of claim 11 wherein said first panel includes an inner surface and an outer surface, said first flange secured to said inner surface, said first pocket extending from said first flange through said first opening. 13. The package of claim 12 wherein said second panel includes an inner surface and an outer surface and defines a second opening therethrough, said second flange secured to said inner surface of said second panel, said second plastic component including a second pocket extending from said second flange through said second opening. 14. The package of claim 13 wherein said paperboard portion is a single continuous piece of paperboard and said hinge is further defined as a fold line in said paperboard portion. 15. The package of claim 14 wherein at least one of said first plastic component and said second plastic component includes a shoulder and the other of said first plastic component and said second plastic component includes a seat, said seat configured to frictionally receive said shoulder when said paperboard portion is in said closed position. 16. The package of claim 15 wherein said seat includes a sidewall and a base, said shoulder and seat configured so that shoulder abuts said base and said sidewall when said first plastic component and said second plastic component are interfitted. 17. A package comprising: a paperboard blank having an inner surface and an outer surface, said blank having a fold line dividing said blank into first and second panels, said paperboard blank being foldable along said fold line from an open position into a closed position to selectively bring said inner surface of said first panel and said inner surface of said second panel into adjacent facing relationship, said first panel defining a first opening, said second panel defining a second opening, said first opening and said second opening being generally aligned when said paperboard blank is folded into said closed position;a plastic element including a first plastic component and a second plastic component joined about a flexible seam, said first plastic component seated within said first opening and having a first flange joined to said first panel, said second plastic component seated within said second opening and having a second flange joined to said second panel, said flexible seam being nested within said paperboard fold line; andwherein said first plastic component releasably frictionally interfits within said second plastic component when said paperboard blank is folded into said closed position, whereby said first plastic component and said second plastic component hold said paperboard blank in said closed position, wherein the paperboard blank can be repeatedly moved about said fold line between said open and closed positions without damaging the package,wherein said first and second flanges each have an inside surface facing toward each other when said paperboard blank is in said closed position, and an outside surface facing away from each other when said paperboard blank is in said closed position, wherein said first panel is positioned adjacent said outside surface of said first flange and said second panel is positioned adjacent said outside surface of said second flange,wherein said first panel remains joined to said first flange and said second panel remains joined to said second flange as said paperboard panel repeatedly moves between said closed and said open positions, and said first and second plastic components engage one another when said fold line of said paperboard blank orients said first and second panels in said closed position and said first and second plastic components are separated when said fold line of said paperboard orients said first and second panels in said open position. 18. The package of claim 17 wherein said first plastic component includes a first pocket and said second plastic component includes a second pocket, said first pocket and said second pocket cooperatively defining a closed interior space, wherein in said open position said first panel is hinged away from said second panel and said first plastic component is separated from said second plastic component to provide access to said interior space. 19. The package of claim 18 wherein said first plastic component includes a shoulder and said second plastic component includes a seat, said seat configured to frictionally receive said shoulder when said paperboard portion is folded into said closed position. 20. The package of claim 19 wherein said seat includes a sidewall and a base, said shoulder and seat configured so that shoulder abuts said base and said sidewall when said first plastic component and said second plastic component are interfitted.
