An axial-flow blood pump for pumping blood includes a substantially cylindrical outer enclosure. A tubular housing concentric with and located within the outer enclosure has at one end an inlet and at an opposite end an outlet. A motor stator is concentric with and located between the outer enclosure and the tubular housing. An impeller is concentric with and located within the tubular housing. The impeller is suspended in operation by a combination of passive magnetic forces between magnets within the impeller or magnetized regions of the impeller and the motor stator and hydrodynamic thrust forces generated as blood flows between the tubular housing and a plurality of hydrodynamic thrust bearing surfaces located on the impeller. A volute may be in fluid-tight connection with the outlet of the tubular housing for receiving blood in the axial direction and directing blood in a direction normal to the axial direction. The volute has a flow-improving member extending axially from the volute and into and coaxially with the tubular housing.

1. An axial flow blood pump comprising: a tubular pump housing having a housing inlet and a housing outlet;a rotor within said tubular pump housing having a rotational axis and an upstream end and a downstream end axially aligned with said upstream end between said housing inlet and housing outlet, said rotor being provided with a plurality of spaced apart grooves each extending from a respective axially directed fluid entry opening thereto at said upstream end to and including an enlarged axially directed fluid exit channel terminating at said downstream end, said grooves defining a plurality of peripheral land areas therebetween, each of said grooves being defined by sidewalls projecting substantially radially outwardly relative to the rotational axis of said rotor as boundaries for respective peripheral land areas, said sidewalls defining said axially directed fluid entry openings and diverging to define said axially directed fluid exit channels, said grooves having portions curved relative to said rotational axis to direct blood flow axially therein to enhance downstream fluid flow characteristics in an axial direction when said rotor is rotating; andsaid peripheral land areas being magnetically coupled to a motor stator to enable said rotor to be rotated in a predetermined direction. 2. The axial flow blood pump of claim 1 in which the motor comprises a tubular stator enclosure that slides over said tubular pump housing and is hermetically sealed thereto. 3. The axial flow blood pump of claim 1 in which said tubular pump housing is made from biocompatible titanium or ceramic. 4. The for axial flow blood pump of claim 1 in which the rotor is provided with a plurality of bores therein to provide dynamic balance during rotation thereof. 5. The axial flow blood pump of claim 1 in which said grooves are of non-uniform depth along a length from said upstream end of said rotor to said downstream end thereof. 6. The axial flow blood pump of claim 5 in which the average depth of each of said grooves from the outer surfaces of said peripheral land areas is within the range of from about 1 mm to about 5 mm. 7. The axial flow blood pump of claim 5 in which the depth of said grooves is greater at said fluid entry openings than at said fluid exit channels. 8. The axial flow blood pump of claim 5 in which said grooves are deeper at upstream sections and shallower at downstream sections. 9. The axial flow blood pump of claim 1 in which said rotor comprises a heat treated biomedical alloy. 10. The axial flow blood pump of claim 9 in which said biomedical alloy comprises a magnetic alloy. 11. The axial flow blood pump of claim 10 in which said rotor is made from ferromagnetic material comprising an alloy of platinum and cobalt of about 70-80% platinum by weight and about 20-30% cobalt by weight, said tubular pump housing being made from biocompatible titanium or ceramic. 12. The axial flow blood pump of claim 10 comprising a magnetized selected portion of the outer surface of each of said peripheral land areas to provide electromagnetic coupling with said motor stator. 13. Thew axial flow blood pump of claim 1 in which said rotor comprises isotropic material. 14. The axial flow blood pump of claim 1 in which said rotor comprises anisotropic material. 15. The axial flow blood pump of claim 1 in which said peripheral land areas contain drive magnets and said motor stator comprises electrically conductive coils surrounding said drive magnets thereby to rotate said rotor by application of electric power to said electrically conductive coils to create magnetic flux with respect to said drive magnets. 16. The axial flow blood pump of claim 1 comprising orientation magnetic poles on one or more of the peripheral land areas at the upstream or downstream end of the rotor and corresponding stator magnetic poles adjacent said orientation magnetic poles such that adjacent magnetic poles repel to provide orienting axial support for said rotor within said tubular pump housing. 17. The axial flow blood pump of claim 1 in which said fluid exit channels are wider than said curved fluid flow portions of said grooves and the collective circumferential width of said grooves at axial positions on a circumferential periphery of said rotor is substantially equal to or less than the collective total circumferential width of said peripheral land areas. 18. The axial flow blood pump of claim 17 in which the collective circumferential width of said grooves at axial positions on a circumferential periphery of said rotor is substantially less than the collective total circumferential width of said peripheral land areas. 19. The axial flow blood pump of claim 1 in which a gap exists between outer surfaces of said peripheral land areas of said rotor and an interior wall surface of said tubular housing. 20. The axial flow blood pump of claim 19 in which said interior wall surface adjacent said housing inlet defines an inwardly constricting annular inlet ring, said upstream end of said rotor being contoured to follow a downstream shape of said annular inlet ring to assist in positioning the rotor within said tubular pump housing. 21. The axial flow blood pump of claim 20 in which said contoured upstream end of said rotor is provided with a hydrodynamic thrust bearing surface to cooperate with said downstream shape of said annular inlet ring to assist in positioning the rotor within the tubular pump housing. 22. The axial flow blood pump of claim 19 in which each of said peripheral land areas is provided with one or more hydrodynamic thrust bearing surfaces disposed substantially circumferentially along its outer surface, each of said thrust bearing surfaces being recessed relative to said outer surface at a leading front end from which said thrust bearing surface tapers in a gradual curved manner to a trailing rear end thereof to transition into said outer surface, said gap being larger at said leading front end than at said trailing rear end for hydrodynamic thrust control of the position of said rotor within said tubular pump housing. 23. The axial flow blood pump of claim 22 in which each of said thrust bearing surfaces tapers along an arc not coaxial with the rotational axis of the rotor and comprises a shroud along each lateral side thereof to reduce fluid leakage therefrom, each of said shrouds decreasing in height relative to said thrust bearing surface from said leading front end to said trailing rear end thereof. 24. The axial flow blood pump of claim 23 in which each of said shroud sidewalls extends substantially transverse to the rotational axis of the rotor. 25. The axial flow blood pump of claim 23 in which said shroud sidewalls extend from a high point at said leading front end of each of said thrust bearing surfaces to merge into said peripheral land area at said trailing rear end. 26. The axial flow blood pump of claim 23 in which a relief portion of the outer surface of each peripheral land area contiguous with said trailing rear end of a thrust bearing surface diverges to enlarge said gap to reduce pressure on blood therein. 27. The axial flow blood pump of claim 22 in which said circumferential thrust bearing surfaces are disposed in substantially parallel directions not coaxial with the rotational axis of the rotor. 28. The axial flow blood pump of claim 19 in which said interior wall surface of said tubular pump housing is constricted adjacent said housing outlet to define an annular outlet ring, said downstream end of said rotor being contoured to follow an upstream shape of said annular outlet ring and defining a hydrodynamic thrust bearing surface to maintain said gap to provide axial thrust bearing support for said rotor. 29. The axial flow blood pump of claim 1 comprising a plurality of said rotors within said tubular pump housing, said plurality of rotors being axially spaced apart in the direction of blood flow within said tubular pump housing and suspended within and out of contact with said tubular pump housing solely by forces selected from the group consisting of magnetic and hydrodynamic forces. 30. The axial flow blood pump of claim 29 in which said rotors are ganged together on a common shaft to rotate together as one in the same direction. 31. The axial flow blood pump of claim 29 comprising at least two of said rotors. 32. The axial flow blood pump of claim 29 in which individual ones of said rotors function independently without a connecting shaft. 33. The axial flow blood pump of claim 32 in which the rates of rotation of said plurality of rotors varies, one from the other. 34. The axial flow blood pump of claim 32 in which one of said rotors rotates clockwise to drive blood axially toward said housing outlet while an adjacent one of said rotors rotates counterclockwise to drive blood axially toward said housing outlet. 35. The axial flow blood pump of claim 29 comprising stator plates projecting radially inwardly from an inner wall of said tubular pump housing downstream from one or more of said spaced apart rotors thereby to diminish rotational momentum of axially directed blood flow. 36. The axial flow blood pump of claim 35 in which each of said stator plates projects inwardly between an adjacent pair of said rotors. 37. The axial flow blood pump of claim 1 in which said fluid entry openings are defined by rounded axially directed surfaces of said sidewalls thereby to facilitate entry of blood into said spaced apart grooves. 38. The axial flow blood pump of claim 1 in which said rotor has a conformal polymer coating defining a hermetic seal to prevent oxidation and a hard lubricious protective coating over said conformal polymer coating to protect from wear and abrasion. 39. The axial flow blood pump of claim 1 in which the rotor is substantially cylindrical having a radius within the range of from about 2 mm to about 10 mm from the rotational axis. 40. The axial flow blood pump of claim 1 in which said grooves are substantially parallel. 41. The axial flow blood pump of claim 1 in which said fluid exit channels are longer than said curved fluid flow portions of said grooves. 42. The axial flow blood pump of claim 1 in which said rotor comprises four of said grooves. 43. The axial flow blood pump of claim 16 in which orientation magnetic poles are provided on each of said peripheral land areas. 44. The axial flow blood pump of claim 16 in which orientation magnetic poles are provided at the upstream end of the rotor. 45. The axial flow blood pump of claim 16 in which orientation magnetic poles are provided at the downstream end of the rotor.
